Petco on 2nd Avenue has several features and highlights that are noteworthy for local pet owners, based on available information and customer feedback.
- Extensive Aquatic Selection: A significant highlight is the store's "biggest stock of aquatic selection" for various fish, including puffa fish. Customers have noted the general health of the fish, even the Bettas in smaller jars, suggesting a commitment to maintaining live animal quality in this department. This makes it a key destination for New York's aquarium enthusiasts.
- Dog Training and Grooming Services: The availability of these services on-site provides convenience for pet owners looking for comprehensive care in one location. The presence of different floors for different services, and potentially different price points, suggests a structured approach to their service offerings.
- Pet Adoption Opportunities: The presence of adoptable cats upstairs, tended to by staff, is a heartwarming feature that connects local residents with pets in need of forever homes, fostering community engagement and responsible pet ownership.
- Responsive Staff for Orders: One customer noted a male staff member who was attentive to a query regarding ordering an out-of-stock aquarium stone and "jumped to action to order" it. This indicates a willingness among some staff members to assist customers with specific product needs.
- Convenient Midtown Location: Its 2nd Avenue address makes it highly accessible for many Manhattan residents, reducing travel time for essential pet errands and services.
- Broad Product Range: The store generally carries a wide variety of pet food, toys, and supplies, addressing the everyday needs of a diverse range of pets from dogs and cats to smaller animals and fish.
However, it's also important to acknowledge some recurring feedback points from customers:
- Inconsistent Grooming Quality: Several reviews mention issues with grooming, including upcharges for unrequested services and dissatisfaction with the quality of basic tasks like nail buffing. This suggests that while grooming is offered, customer experiences can vary.
- Management and Staff Mood: One review pointed to a "miserable unhelpful manager" which reportedly impacted staff morale and customer experience, indicating potential inconsistencies in leadership and customer service across the store.
- Animal Welfare Concerns: Concerns were raised about the size of cat cages at night and, more significantly, the presence of dead Betta fish on a subsequent visit, one of which was in a very poor state. While staff were apologetic, this points to areas where animal welfare monitoring could be improved.

Petco Reviews
Every time we’ve taken our pup for grooming here, we get up charged for things we clearly didn’t ask for but more importantly the things we asked for were poorly done. On our last appointment, we added the nail buffing for our pup and they’re still sharp, just cutting them is not buffing it. Will be searching for a new groomer, definitely not worth the price.
Jun 22, 2025 · NeeshMiserable unhelpful manager. This reflected in the staff member having to radio her. After having a chat with a young lady on the check out. Higher authority was needed to answer my question. The cashier’s mood lowered. They have some large cats which are cute but I feel they need bigger cages at night.Dog training and grooming. Different floors for different prices. I visited late before closing because side I’d been to the store near 5th Ave and they didn’t have the size shoe I needed for our apartment dog.I won’t be back in a rush even though they have the biggest stock of aquatic selection I’ve seen for my puffa fish. All the fish looked healthy. Even the bettas in the tiny jars were active.Hopefully the atmosphere will have changed by my next visit.Second visit 3/29/2025.Several dead Betta fish. I took two upstairs and gave to staff who were apologetic. One stank so badly and had a stream of entrails? I’m surprised no one noticed as it was near one of the staff only doors. Cutest cats upstairs for adoption tended to by a female staff member. Male was also attentive as I had a query re ordering and he jumped to action to order the aquarium stone they didn’t have in stock.
Mar 30, 2025 · Ebony EvansGuy groomed our dog and did the worst possible job ever! I’m so disappointed. We’ve taken our dog here multiple times and this was the worst experience. It looks like he has a toupee! And he buzzed so close on parts of his body it’s all uneven. He should have faded in the fur better. NEVER GOING BACK!
Sep 22, 2024 · Neelam KhojaGreat place. Sam and Ed are very professional, kind and with passions to the animals! We got our little tortoise and we love to visit the store! Especially playing with the big one “George”!
Aug 19, 2024 · Zhe ChengUnfortunately staff aren’t friendly with everyone. There was “expired” cat food on sale for half the price! Luckily I noticed it was expired. The shop isn’t updated as the one in union square, however they have everything needed. I wrote this review to improve petco in this location because I love petco and I love to bring food and litter boxes for my cats from them, but I won’t visit this branch again. I will go to Union square better staff and very well renovated.
