The Petco in Boulder, CO, stands out for several features and highlights that impact the customer experience, though it's worth noting that experiences can vary, as illustrated by customer reviews:
- Dedicated and Knowledgeable Staff (with caveats): As one customer review clearly indicates, the quality of staff interaction can vary. One staff member was praised for being "very nice and helped us as much as he could," providing an "informative rundown" on coupons. This highlights the potential for excellent, helpful service and knowledgeable associates who are willing to assist customers with their needs and questions. The consistent practice of staff asking permission before interacting with a pup is a highly appreciated gesture that fosters comfort for both pet and owner.
- Broad Product Availability: The store is generally well-stocked with a "good selection" of pet products. Customers appreciate finding their specific preferred brands, such as "Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream" dog food, which is crucial for pets with dietary sensitivities or picky tastes. While some specific items, like "Fancy Feast pate seafood varieties for my geriatric cat with chicken allergy and half a mouth of teeth," might not always be available, the overall selection is robust.
- Convenience and "One-Stop Shop" Potential: With its diverse services, including grooming, training, and potential vet clinics, Petco aims to be a comprehensive resource, minimizing the need for multiple stops for different pet needs. This integrated approach can be a significant time-saver for busy Colorado pet parents.
- Petco Vital Care Membership Program: This loyalty program, also mentioned in the reviews (though sometimes with pushy sales tactics), offers significant benefits. The free tier, Vital Care Core, allows members to earn points on purchases and provides perks like every 8th dog groom free. The paid tier, Vital Care Premier (starting at $24.99/month for dogs/cats), offers 10% off all nutrition, 20% off grooming or litter, unlimited routine vet exams at participating Petco locations (or $20 Pals Rewards for outside vets), and $15 Pals Rewards per month, among other discounts. This can be a major highlight for frequent shoppers and those utilizing multiple services.
- Pet-Friendly Environment: The fact that staff are attuned to how to approach pets (asking to pet/touch/give treats) creates a comfortable and positive environment, allowing pups to practice socialization and impulse control in a stimulating setting.

Petco Reviews
I'm conflicted about this review, and will give details as to why below. My wife and I stopped in to get supplies for our new dog. A staff member walked up to us and gave us a booklet with coupons in it and gave us a brief and informative rundown on how to use coupons and on what items they would apply to. He was very nice and helped us as much as he could, so that individual gets a solid 5 stars. However, we get to the register and the staff member looked as if we were inconveniencing her. We had other pet-related things in the cart from a different store and as I was removing those other items, I mentioned they were from another store. She said "yeah, obviously" and proceeded to tell us why she didn't shop at the store I had mentioned because she didn't support their political choices. She then tried to hard sell us on their membership program, to which we kept declining. She would add "really?" And kinda scoff after each no we gave. After we finished checking out, she said nothing further to us and, somehow, became even more rude towards us than she was previously. The first staff member was excellent but the second ensured that we will be choosing other locations before coming back to this one. If it wasn't for the first staff member, this would have been an easy one star.PS: the first staff member forgot to mention that the coupon book was only for members, so be aware of that if they hand you something similar.
May 03, 2025 · Evan BillsGood selection, nice people. Staff is friendly and always asks if it is ok to pet/touch/give treats to my pup first which is so great. And it makes him feel much more comfortable when he is approached that way too. So it’s nice to come in and say hi and help him practice impulsive control, meeting new people, and listening to me/commands in a very distracting environment for a young pup. Much appreciated! And love it when the flower cookies, pumpkin rings, and his dog food (taste of the wild pacific stream- he’s a standard poodle with a sensitive stomach and picky taste) are in stock.Do wish they carried fancy feast pate seafood varieties for my geriatric cat with chicken allergy and half a mouth of teeth. So didn’t have to make multiple stops or orders but that’s ok.
Nov 16, 2023 · Taylor CravenI love this PetCo! I live in Lafayette, but drive to Boulder specifically just to shop here. They have an enormous assortment of products and the store is always spotless.I have had several positive interactions with the store manager (Daniel), and while all the employees are super helpful and friendly, Riley (spelling?!) is extra kind to my 2 year old daughter whenever we are checking out—which means the world to her, and me! I can’t recommend this place enough!
Jan 20, 2025 · Venessa BegleyThank you employee Sonic for your thoughtful customer service when I was getting a toy for my dog after spending much time and money at the vetco clinic attached where she got emergency stitches.A toy was placed in the incorrect bin so he wasn't able to offer the full discount but he did offer a part of a discount in place without me asking which was very considerate and just what was needed! I am sure to visit often this store.
Feb 12, 2025 · Beau ForteSimilar experience as Evan Bills a week ago…great guy on floor was helpful finding supplies for our new puppies.Angst Gen Z nose piercing girl at checkout couldn’t have been more unpleasant. First she ignored a greeting and then threw our items as hard as possible into our cart like a petulant toddler putting toys away (after yelling at us where to put our dog bed).O yeah…and she did the hard sell on the dumb membership. Is it still Covid? That hard to find someone pleasant that won’t ruin having a new puppy? $350 paid to get treated like we were suuuuuch an inconvenience.Amazon it is in the future…
