SPS Coral Store Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For dedicated marine aquarium enthusiasts across California, finding a specialized store that truly understands the intricate world of coral reef keeping can be a treasure. SPS Coral Store, located in the picturesque community of La Cañada Flintridge, positions itself as such a destination. Catering specifically to hobbyists passionate about Small Polyp Stony (SPS) corals, this establishment aims to provide a focused selection for those looking to build and maintain vibrant, thriving reef tanks.
The name "SPS Coral Store" itself indicates a niche focus, distinguishing it from general pet stores that might offer a broad range of animals but lack depth in specialized areas like advanced reef keeping. SPS corals are known for their vibrant colors and intricate structures, making them highly sought after by experienced aquarists who appreciate the challenge and beauty these corals bring to a marine ecosystem. While the store's reputation has seen varying customer experiences, particularly regarding cleanliness and stock, it's clear that at its best, it is intended to be a hub for serious reef hobbyists in the Greater Los Angeles area.
In the demanding world of marine aquariums, where water parameters and environmental stability are paramount, having access to knowledgeable staff and healthy specimens is crucial. SPS Coral Store aims to be a resource for those navigating the complexities of keeping these delicate and rewarding creatures. For Californians committed to their reef tanks, this store presents itself as a specialized provider, potentially offering the specific coral species and expert advice needed to cultivate a stunning underwater garden. It serves as a testament to the passionate and diverse pet-keeping community that thrives throughout the Golden State.

This location places it within a charming and affluent community in Los Angeles County, nestled at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. While reviews suggest the store may have limited or inconsistent operating hours (Saturdays and Sundays, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM based on some online information, though it's advised to call ahead), its physical presence in La Cañada Flintridge makes it a dedicated local option for a specialized hobby. For Californians who prefer to inspect live corals in person rather than relying solely on online purchases, a physical store like SPS Coral Store, despite potential inconsistencies, remains a valuable local point of access for their specific aquatic needs. Its setting within a serene, upscale community also lends itself to the calm and focused nature of the reef-keeping hobby.

- Sales of SPS Corals: The primary focus of SPS Coral Store is the sale of Small Polyp Stony (SPS) corals. These are highly sought after by advanced reef aquarists for their vibrant colors and complex growth patterns.
- Sales of LPS Corals and Soft Corals: Despite its name, reviews indicate that the store also carries Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals and soft corals, providing a broader selection for various reef tank setups.

- Expert Advice (Varying Experience): Some customer feedback suggests the staff are passionate and knowledgeable about coral and marine life, potentially offering advice on tank setup, coral care, and compatibility, which can be invaluable for hobbyists.
- Display Tanks for Viewing: The store features display tanks where corals are showcased, allowing customers to view the health and appearance of the corals before purchase.
Features / Highlights
- Specialized Niche Focus: SPS Coral Store is one of the few local businesses in California dedicated primarily to SPS corals, appealing directly to a specialized segment of the aquarium hobby. This focus can imply deeper expertise in this specific area.
- Passion for Marine Life: Positive reviews often highlight that "the people that work there love what they do and it shows in the tanks and coral," indicating a genuine passion for marine aquariums and the living inhabitants. This passion can translate into better care for the corals when the tanks are maintained well.
- Potential for High-Quality Corals (when well-maintained): When the tanks are clean and healthy, customers have praised the beauty and quality of the corals, indicating the potential for finding excellent specimens. One positive review noted, "The store is very very clean the tanks are beautiful. You can tell the people that work there love what they do and it shows in the tanks and coral. ...the coral selection is great and the service even better."
- In-Person Selection: For local Californians, the ability to physically visit the store and select corals in person is a significant advantage over online purchases, allowing for a direct assessment of coral health and color.
It is important to acknowledge that there have been conflicting customer experiences. Some recent feedback from several years ago describes the main display tanks as "disgusting" with "algae covering the glass and every surface on the rock," and concerns about the health of the corals. This indicates a potential inconsistency in store upkeep and coral health. However, a more recent review (though also several years old) describes the tanks as "very very clean" and "beautiful," suggesting that maintenance standards may fluctuate or that the store has made improvements. Customers are advised to visit in person to assess current conditions.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For marine aquarium enthusiasts in California, particularly those residing in the Greater Los Angeles area, SPS Coral Store in La Cañada Flintridge offers a potentially valuable local resource for their specialized hobby. While customer experiences, particularly over time, have varied, the existence of a dedicated coral store in the region fills a specific niche that general pet shops often cannot.
The primary suitability for locals lies in its focused approach to coral sales, especially for SPS corals, which are often the pinnacle of achievement for many reef aquarists. Having a physical location allows Californians to personally inspect delicate live corals, a crucial factor given their sensitivity to transport and environmental changes. This in-person selection can provide greater confidence in the health and quality of the specimens compared to online purchases, where visual assessment is limited. For those committed to the demanding yet rewarding world of reef keeping, the ability to see the corals in their current state is a significant advantage.
Furthermore, when the store is operating at its best, as indicated by some positive reviews, the presence of passionate staff and well-maintained tanks suggests a local establishment that can provide valuable insights and healthy stock. Despite past criticisms regarding tank conditions, the store's continued operation suggests a fluctuating but persistent effort to cater to its niche market. For local residents, this means a potential direct line to specialized advice and a unique selection of corals that might not be available elsewhere in their immediate vicinity. While it's prudent for potential customers to visit and assess the current conditions for themselves, the SPS Coral Store stands as a dedicated option for advanced reef hobbyists seeking specific coral species and a specialized buying experience within their Californian community.

SPS Coral Store Reviews
Ignore good reviews!!! Note they are from 9-6 YEARS ago. Look at pics and video I posted.Drove an hour just to visit this place one of the few times they are open. They decided to close early and nobody was there. Worse I look inside the store and the two main display tanks are disgusting! Algae covering the glass and every surface on the rock. Aptasia nearing the 2 inch mark! Only softies and a few LPS corals so the name is very misleading. Even the softies can’t be kept alive in this tank. If you can’t trust them to care for even the absolute easiest corals AND doesn’t care to make the shop the least bit presentable how can you trust anything they say.
Nov 26, 2023 · Will ShalerWent in there for the first time to look around and get some Bacteria for my tank. The store is very very clean the tanks are beautiful. You can tell the people that work there love what they do and it shows in the tanks and coral. I wish this store was a bit bigger so they could offer more fish in stock but the coral selection is great and the service even better. I will defiantly be back.
Jan 25, 2015 · BrandonSad, it used to be the best coal store available in the area. Good pricing and selections good customer service before. Now I had been there twice. Guy at the register said everything in the tank are display only. About 10 polyp frags with tons of algae growing on them are the only thing on sale. I purchased from them many times I know they have tons of great stuff in the back as well. But this new guy just don't want any business anymore.
Mar 29, 2018 · Willie TangI just recently started going to SPS Coral store in La Canada. I am new at the "saltwater" niche of the aquarist hobby and thought I would give this store a try since its close by. The shop is family owned and have probably the best customer service in the hobby, extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The store is a little hard to find at first glance next to a local dry cleaner, but would call it a hidden treasure. Although the shop is small it sells a beautiful variety of corals (hence their name and specialty) they also carry fish although the selection isn't huge. They have some very beautiful display tanks and have very competitive prices. They sell RO and Saltwater. Definitely will be going back.
Jun 03, 2013 · Daniel NicolaldeThe best store in the area!! Good selection and the most friendly and knowledgeable people. They are evidently here to sell you, but they will give you their most honest opinion and even tell you that you should not buy if they feel that it is not a perfect match for you. Did I mention that they quarantine all their fish? I will not buy any fish anywhere else....why take a chance?Erwan
