This article will delve into what makes West Lake Aquarium a noteworthy stop for fish enthusiasts in California. We'll cover its convenient location, the specific services it offers, its distinct features and highlights, and provide essential contact information. Ultimately, we’ll explore why this local pet store, with its niche focus and personal touch, is a valuable asset to the Southern California aquatic community, despite varied customer experiences on cleanliness and pricing.
Location and Accessibility
West Lake Aquarium is conveniently situated at 710 E Whittier Blvd, La Habra, CA 90631, USA. This address places it squarely within Orange County, a populous region of Southern California, making it easily accessible for residents from various surrounding communities. La Habra itself is well-connected, with major thoroughfares providing straightforward routes to the store.
East Whittier Boulevard is a primary commercial artery in La Habra, meaning the store is likely to be found within a commercial zone with other businesses, potentially offering ample parking and ease of entry. Its location in an established area of La Habra contributes to its accessibility for those driving from nearby cities like Fullerton, Brea, Whittier, or even further afield in Orange and Los Angeles Counties. The presence on a main road also helps with visibility, making it a familiar landmark for local residents. For fish keepers, who often make repeat visits for supplies or new additions to their tanks, the straightforward accessibility of West Lake Aquarium is a practical advantage, saving time and reducing travel hassle. The store’s consistent operating hours, generally from 10:00 AM to 06:00 PM Monday through Sunday, also provide flexibility for visitors.
Services Offered
West Lake Aquarium, while primarily a retail establishment for aquatic life and supplies, offers several key services that cater to the needs of freshwater fish enthusiasts.
- Freshwater Fish Sales: The core offering is a diverse selection of freshwater fish. They are particularly known for specializing in discus and angelfish, which are often bred directly by the owner, Patrick. This in-house breeding can contribute to healthier, more acclimated fish for local conditions.
- Aquarium Supplies: Beyond the fish themselves, West Lake Aquarium provides essential supplies for setting up and maintaining freshwater aquariums. While specific inventory details require an in-store visit, customers can generally expect to find items such as fish food, water conditioners, filtration media, and basic tank accessories.
- Expert Advice and Guidance: A significant value proposition comes from the owner, Patrick, who is described by customers as knowledgeable and passionate about fish keeping. This indicates that visitors can receive personalized advice on fish care, compatibility, tank setup, and troubleshooting, which is invaluable for both beginners and experienced hobbyists.
- Breeding Expertise: The fact that the owner breeds discus and angelfish suggests a deep understanding of fish reproduction, genetics, and health. This expertise can translate into healthier fish for sale and reliable information for customers interested in breeding their own fish.
Features / Highlights
West Lake Aquarium possesses several features and highlights that set it apart as a local pet store focused on the aquatic hobby.
- Specialization in Discus and Angelfish: This is a major highlight. Discus and angelfish are beautiful but can be challenging species to keep. West Lake Aquarium's focus and the owner's expertise in breeding these fish mean customers are more likely to find healthy, well-acclimated specimens. This specialization also makes it a go-to spot for enthusiasts of these particular species in the wider California region.
- Owner-Operated with Personal Touch: The consistent mention of "Patrick" by name in customer reviews highlights the owner-operated nature of the business. This often translates to a more personal customer service experience, where advice is tailored, and relationships with regulars are built. For many, this is preferable to the often-impersonal experience of larger chain stores.
- Locally Bred Fish: The fact that discus and angelfish are bred in-house is a significant advantage. Locally bred fish are often more robust and better adapted to local water parameters and conditions, reducing stress and increasing their chances of thriving in a new home. This also supports responsible pet trade practices by reducing reliance on wild-caught or imported fish.
- Community Resource: For freshwater fish enthusiasts in La Habra and surrounding areas, West Lake Aquarium serves as a valuable local hub. It provides a dedicated space where individuals can find specific types of fish, get reliable information, and potentially connect with a local expert.
- Variety of Freshwater Fish: While specializing, the store also maintains a general variety of freshwater fish, catering to a broader range of preferences and ensuring customers have options for their community tanks.
- Accessibility: The store’s location on a main boulevard in La Habra, with wheelchair accessibility, makes it an easy destination for many Southern California residents.
It is important to acknowledge that some customer feedback indicates concerns regarding store cleanliness and fish pricing compared to other options. However, the recurring theme of high-quality, healthy fish, especially the specialized discus and angelfish, often bred by the owner, and the value of personalized, expert advice from Patrick, are consistently highlighted as key strengths. This suggests a trade-off some customers are willing to make for specialized knowledge and unique aquatic offerings.

In a region as vast and diverse as California, having access to specialized businesses like West Lake Aquarium is a significant advantage. Instead of generic selections, local fish keepers can find a curated inventory, particularly high-quality discus and angelfish, which are often difficult to source from larger retailers. The fact that the owner, Patrick, personally breeds many of these fish is a testament to their health and adaptability to local conditions, giving buyers confidence in their purchases. This hands-on approach directly addresses a common concern among aquarists: the health and origin of their aquatic inhabitants.
Beyond the fish themselves, the personalized advice offered by Patrick is an invaluable resource. For both novice and experienced hobbyists, navigating the intricacies of water parameters, tank cycling, fish compatibility, and disease prevention can be daunting. A knowledgeable local expert who is passionate about the hobby can provide guidance that online forums or general store employees often cannot match. This level of support fosters a more successful and enjoyable fish-keeping experience, reducing frustration and promoting healthy aquatic environments.
While some reviews mention concerns about cleanliness or pricing, these points are often balanced by the consistent praise for the quality of the fish and the owner's expertise. For many local residents, the trade-off is worthwhile for access to healthy, specialized livestock and invaluable, trustworthy advice. In essence, West Lake Aquarium functions as more than just a store; it serves as a community touchstone for freshwater fish enthusiasts, fostering the hobby by providing reliable resources and fostering a connection with a passionate, local expert. It’s a prime example of how a specialized local business can profoundly enrich a community's unique interests and needs.

West Lake Aquarium Reviews
The tanks looked dirty, and the overall cleanliness of the store was lacking. The prices for the fish were also quite high compared to other places. I wouldn't recommend this store if you're looking for a clean and affordable aquarium shopping experience. There are better options out there.
Apr 17, 2025 · John PaganiI’ve lived in la habra for over 10 plus yrs and I regret not knowing about this fish store! I’ve been going to Patrick’s(owner) fish store for about 2yr. Patrick is really a kind down to earth guy! He has a variety of fresh water fish and specialized in discus and Angel fish, which he breeds himself! If you’re around la habra or live in la habra go visit West Lake Aquarium for all your fish keeping needs.

Oct 29, 2020 · mike flo20Patrick is the old man who owns it. I met him for some discuss at his store they were so healthy and exotic not the average discuss at all! They were so healthy a few month later I came for more. He is a talented fish breeder and breathe some of his fish in the house which is more of a sign of his talents not just a person who purchases fish and sells them like all the big box stores do! This man can help you have a healthy aquarium with healthy fish that breedIf you have the time to learn and have some money to spend this is an awesome place to come
