Veterinary dentistry is a highly specialized field within veterinary medicine, focusing exclusively on the oral health of animals. Just like in humans, proper dental care is vital for a pet's overall health and quality of life. Dental issues in pets can range from common plaque and tartar buildup to more severe conditions like periodontal disease, fractured teeth, oral tumors, and malocclusions. These problems can cause significant pain, lead to systemic health issues, and impact a pet's ability to eat comfortably. A board-certified veterinary dentist possesses advanced training and equipment to diagnose and treat these complex oral conditions, often performing procedures that general veterinarians might refer out. For New Jersey pet owners, having a dedicated facility like Veterinary Dentistry Specialists means access to a higher level of expertise for their pet's unique dental needs, ensuring comprehensive and effective treatment.

- Comprehensive Oral Examinations: Thorough assessments of your pet's entire oral cavity, often requiring anesthesia for detailed examination of every tooth surface and gum line.
- Dental Radiography (X-rays): Essential for diagnosing conditions beneath the gum line, such as fractured roots, bone loss, and unerupted teeth, which are invisible during a conscious oral exam.
- Professional Dental Cleanings: Scaling and polishing of teeth above and below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar, crucial for preventing periodontal disease.
- Advanced Periodontal Therapy: Treatment for gum disease, which may include root planing, guided tissue regeneration, and other procedures to save affected teeth and prevent further progression of the disease.
- Tooth Extractions: Expert and often complex extractions of diseased, fractured, or problematic teeth, performed with pain management and careful technique to ensure comfortable recovery.
- Fractured Tooth Repair: Restoration of fractured teeth through various techniques, including root canal therapy or vital pulpotomy, aiming to save the tooth and eliminate pain.
- Orthodontics: Addressing malocclusions (improper bites) to improve comfort and function, often involving braces or other dental appliances.
- Oral Surgery: Surgical procedures for conditions such as oral tumors, jaw fractures, and oronasal fistulas (connections between the oral cavity and nasal passages).
- Pain Management: Comprehensive pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative pain control strategies tailored to each patient to ensure maximum comfort during and after dental procedures.
- Anesthesia Monitoring: Utilizing state-the-art anesthesia protocols and continuous monitoring by trained veterinary staff to ensure the safety of every patient during dental procedures.

Veterinary Dentistry Specialists Reviews
Our Dutch Shepherd plays like a beast, and had a few chipped teeth. He healed quickly and nicely, even after an extraction. The office is very clean, and staff was kind, insightful, and knowledgeable. We were happy with the price, too. The followup visit went just as well. The dog showed no distress after being at the vet after his experience. He loved the staff. Plus the staff made these cute wax melts to take home that smell amazing (and they're glittery!). The environment they curate is gentle and genuine.
Feb 19, 2025 · Hannah SmithThis vet denied me care due to my disability and showed a complete disregard for science, public health, and basic infection control. I would seriously reconsider trusting them with any animal’s surgery or medical treatment. My cat needs dental surgery with a specialist, and after going through the necessary steps—including getting a heart scan from an outside provider—the receptionist quoted me $3,500 to $5,500. Given the high cost, I expected a basic level of respect and accommodation. As someone who has a weakened immune system, I asked if the vet could wear a mask during our brief appointment. We are still in an active pandemic with a new wave underway—thousands of people are dying or becoming disabled from long COVID each week. I even offered to provide sealed, medical-grade masks at no cost to them. The receptionist was incredibly rude and immediately shut me down, saying, “We don’t do that,” before briskly putting me on hold to get rid of me. When she came back, she tried to gaslight me by citing outdated CDC guidance, insisting no one there would wear a mask under any circumstances. That stance is not only ignorant—it’s dangerous. Roughly 40% of COVID cases are asymptomatic and still contagious. The idea that only people with symptoms should stay home is a fantasy and a public health failure. What’s more, numerous peer-reviewed studies confirm that pets can contract COVID-19 from humans. This clinic clearly does not care about preventing the spread of airborne illness to humans or animals. The fact that they were smug about it is disgusting. If you're considering surgery or serious care for your pet, think long and hard about whether you want to support a practice that disregards basic science and treats disabled people with such hostility.
Jun 27, 2025 · Renée Nicole GrayI had always been nervous about addressing any dental issues with my various pets. But when I took my 13 year old cat for a regular checkup, my vet strongly recommended i pursue a dental vet specialist to address his concerns about her teeth.I found Dr Scherer and VDS on line and thankfully, chose the right place to help my beloved cat. What a fabulous experience!!!The support staff was so nice and supportive keeping a hysterical pet owner grounded (me) and surgeon Dr Scherer performed a very successful surgery that will keep my cat healthy from what could have been future serious dental debilitation.I dropped her off at 8 am and I was kept in constant touch thru text and phone about her progress during and after the procedure. Unbelievable/ she came home and ate dinner that night after a two hour surgery!!!This is an exceptional, five star facility with outstanding professionals. I regret waiting so long and was needlessly worried about dental issues with my pets - I found Dr Scherer!!!
May 06, 2025 · Linda BohmThis was one of the best experiences I've had with a vet. From the first phone call, the team here has been extremely communitive and helpful. Dr. Scherer was able to explain everything going on with my cat and the procedure that was needed and WHY it was needed. If you're looking for a pet dental specialist I would 100% recommend coming here. Although you are paying a lot more than a local vet, the team gives you and your pet the time and care they deserve.A huge thanks to Dr. Scherer, Annabel, and Mary for everything!
Feb 12, 2025 · MattDr. Scherer and team took great care of our pet. They took time to answer all of our questions and were communicative during the procedure. Could not recommend them enough.
