What is worth choosing
Choosing a veterinarian is one of the most important decisions a pet owner can make, and it’s critical to find a clinic that aligns with your values and provides the highest quality of care. Abbott Road Animal Clinic presents itself as a comprehensive and compassionate option for pet owners in East Lansing and surrounding Michigan communities. The clinic's wide array of services is a significant factor in its favor. From advanced dental work and surgical procedures to comprehensive diagnostics and preventative care, they offer everything your pet might need throughout its life. This full-service model provides continuity of care, which is vital for monitoring your pet's health over time. A client review highlights this by expressing happiness in being able to get "all 3 in at once," a convenience that speaks to the clinic's efficient and comprehensive approach.
Furthermore, the clinic's commitment to being a safe and inclusive space is a notable feature. The designation as an LGBTQ+ friendly and transgender safe space demonstrates a modern, community-oriented approach to healthcare that goes beyond just treating animals. This creates a welcoming environment for all clients, ensuring everyone feels respected and comfortable. The physical accessibility of the clinic, including a wheelchair-accessible entrance, seating, and toilet, further underscores this commitment to inclusivity. These are valuable considerations for pet owners who prioritize convenience and a welcoming atmosphere. The clinic also offers practical benefits like a free parking lot, which makes visits more convenient.
However, it is also important for potential clients to be aware of all available information, including conflicting reviews. While one client praised the clinic for caring about their "fur babies" and catching health issues missed by a previous vet, other reviews raise serious concerns. A more recent review describes a pattern of overcharging, unnecessary procedures, and what the reviewer perceives as unprofessional and careless conduct. This includes allegations of medical oversight, hostile staff behavior, and what one person described as a failure to properly handle a pet's medical needs, such as a missed heart murmur diagnosis and an inability to provide meaningful guidance on IVDD. These contrasting accounts underscore the importance of personal research and forming your own judgment. While the clinic’s services and stated values are impressive, prospective clients should consider all perspectives and perhaps schedule a preliminary visit to assess the staff and environment firsthand. The contrast in reviews suggests that while some clients have had very positive, even life-changing experiences, others have encountered significant issues. This makes it crucial for new clients to be diligent and engaged in their pet’s care, asking detailed questions and keeping their own records.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I love this vet because they care about my fur babies. And the bonus I can get all 3 in at once. The previous vet I was seeing was lying to me about the health of my fur babies. So I immediately switched to this vet and I’m so glad I did . Everyone is supper nice to me and my fur babies
May 08 · kitty clawUpdate: Dr. Chris Jones has been reported for improper veterinary conduct to both, the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, and the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.I wish I had taken the warnings from other reviewers seriously. Unfortunately, I experienced the exact same incompetence, unprofessionalism, and disregard for both pets and their owners that so many have described in the reviews over the years.Carrie Westphal was right: they nickel-and-dime pet owners with unnecessary, overpriced appointments and procedures. Lain's tragedy of a missed heart murmur diagnosis echoes my own experience with their careless medical oversight. Like Zainab, I've been treated with open hostility for asking basic questions. Carsten Walker's account of being blamed for the clinic's own surgical mistakes shows the same refusal to admit error that I encountered. Shauna Soergel's description of staff manhandling anxious pets is not an exaggeration; I've watched them escalate a stressed animal rather than calm it. Cristi's story about Dr. Jones' arrogance? 110% accurate. He is a liability. My own breaking point came after multiple visits with Dr. Jones. In a 2023 visit, he ignored my explicit instructions and gave my Klee Kai unnecessary vaccines that were not due until the following year. My own records (provided by our previous vet, VCA Jackson Animal Hospital) show Parker (Morkie) was due for rabies 24-Jan-2023, while Kai (Klee Kai) was due 13-Feb-2024. Dr. Jones' excuse was "we usually just do both dogs at the same time," which is not consent, not standard of care, and certainly not an acceptable billing practice. My final visit was also with Dr. Jones, after my Klee Kai was diagnosed at MSU's vet ER with IVDD. I scheduled this appointment for long-term care planning. Instead, Dr. Jones simply regurgitated the MSU report back to me, with awkward silences where paragraphs/thoughts ended in the MSU report. In those awkward silences I thought to myself, "is this a joke?" He came and went from the room multiple times (3+) to check and re-check the MSU reports again and again, he even offered to print them out for me. "Dr." Jones never answered my questions about preventing disease progression. When I finally asked, "do you even know what IVDD is?" it was clear he had nothing to offer. The staff behavior is no better. One assistant ignored me upon arrival, humming and staring at her computer until she decided to check me in. She then stood behind the counter while telling me to weigh my dogs (something every other vet tech I've ever dealt with has done themselves). She snapped at me when I asked, "Isn't that your job?" emphasis was given on "job" not "your".On my last visit, when I refused to pay for a pointless appointment that provided no medical value, the assistant and office manager tried to flag me down in the parking lot, prescription in hand, insisting I "WILL pay." I told them to call the police, twice, because I was not going to be paying them.Overall, this clinic has:A) a pattern of overcharging and pushing unnecessary procedures and vaccines, backed by my documented proof (see images attached to review).B) Failure to diagnose serious conditions until it's too late.C) Rude, condescending, and aggressive staff, both in person and over the phone.D) Improper animal handling that can traumatize anxious pets.E) No accountability when they make mistakes. If you care about your pet's health, safety, and emotional well-being and your own sanity: go ANYWHERE else. These are not isolated incidents; they are a consistent pattern of negligence and disrespect toward clients and their pets.
August 15 · Kerrington CurlI took my 15yr old cat to Dr Jones. She was sneezing. And it concerned me. He let me know to keep giving her Lysine daily. Probably for the rest of her life. It’s an immune system booster. Her weight was under 7lbs which was concerning to him & myself. He read about a blood test done in October & he let me know the weight loss could be bcuz of her kidneys. He suggested I try some Hills Diet Prescription Food for Kidneys for Ferby. I said she has always had sensitive stomach with wet foods. He stated not a problem. If this food shehas problems with, Contact me & we will find another RX food that she does tolerate.Overall mine & Ferby’s experience was Awesome. I did not leave there with any doubts or questions.I came home with a Happy Cat. She loves her new food.Thank You to All we had contact with atAbbott Road Animal Clinic. Everyone was friendly and nice & Dr Jones Assistant was very informative.I would say IF you need a Vet this Clinic would be an Excellent Choice. Without a Doubt.
April 05 · dawn marshallMy typical vet could not get my dog in fast enough so they suggested Abbott Road, who was able to see him that day. They treated my elder pitbull mix kindly and with respect when he was not feeling well. I don't know that the doctor was as transparent about his worsening condition as I would've liked; though she may not have been able to confidently without the proper tests. They tried to help my pup as best as they could and followed up afterwards. They offered a clean environment with nice equipment.
April 29 · BethCalled to get my 2 kittens in with upper respiratory infection. They wanted me to make two separate appointments at $75 each, 2 hours apart, not including medication. Totally unnecessary and a huge reason people can't afford pet care. I found another way to care for my kittens and they are doing great, in spite of not getting in.
