We have a senior kitty Logan we took in from a shelter a few years ago at the age of 12 or 13. The vet was quick to diagnose him with hyperthyroidism and we discussed I-131 or meds. The two vets we went to agreed that meds if tolerated work just as well as the treatment. Taking that advise we just tried the meds and had some success until late in 2024 when they were becoming more troublesome and Logan's symptoms were getting worse. I called RadioCat and spoke with Kayris the coordinator for the Phoenix location. Kayris was wonderful, the process incredibly simple and they kept in touch with our regular vet. Logan had his treatment about 30 days ago and we go back for bloodwork in a few days, however, I'm confident the results will be positive news from the changes we have witnessed in Logan. I am eternally thankful for RadioCat and their coordination, even our vet who use to work at a animal hospital that offered this service directly was impressed! It is important to understand, this treatment has a HIGH rate of success and few side affects, however, it doesn't come with zero risk and guaranteed reward. It is trial and error like many medical treatments. - Steven M

Radiocat Maryland specializes exclusively in the treatment of feline hyperthyroidism using Radioactive Iodine (I-131) therapy. Our services are highly focused to provide the most effective and dedicated care for this specific condition. Our core service includes:

  • Radioactive Iodine (I-131) Therapy: This is the cornerstone of our practice. A single, small injection of radioactive iodine (I-131) is administered. The abnormal thyroid tissue absorbs the iodine, and the localized radiation safely and effectively destroys the overactive cells, while sparing normal, healthy thyroid tissue and other organs. This therapy is widely considered the safest and most effective long-term cure for feline hyperthyroidism, often eliminating the need for daily medication or invasive surgery.
  • Pre-Treatment Consultation and Coordination: We work in close coordination with your referring veterinarian to review your cat's medical history, diagnostic tests, and current health status. Our team provides comprehensive consultations to discuss the I-131 treatment process, expected outcomes, potential risks (though minimal), and what to expect during and after your cat's stay.
  • Specialized Feline Care During Hospitalization: Cats undergoing I-131 therapy require a short period of hospitalization in a specially designed, radiation-safe ward. During this time, our experienced staff provides attentive care, monitoring your cat's health, ensuring they are comfortable, and managing any needs that arise. The duration of stay is determined by state radiation safety regulations.
  • Post-Treatment Guidance and Follow-Up Coordination: Upon discharge, we provide detailed instructions for at-home care, including temporary precautions related to radioactivity. We also coordinate with your primary veterinarian for follow-up blood work to monitor thyroid levels and ensure the treatment has been successful.
  • Expert Patient Care Liaisons: Our coordinators, like Kayris (mentioned in reviews), are vital in guiding clients through the entire process, answering questions, and maintaining clear communication between pet owners, their regular vets, and our specialized team.

Radiocat Maryland is distinguished by several key features and highlights that set us apart as the premier choice for feline hyperthyroidism treatment in the region. These aspects are frequently lauded by our satisfied clients and showcase our commitment to excellence:

  • Exclusive Specialization in Feline Hyperthyroidism: Our singular focus means unparalleled expertise. We are not a general veterinary clinic; we are specialists in I-131 therapy, having treated thousands of cats successfully. This dedicated specialization ensures the highest level of knowledge and experience in this specific condition.
  • High Success Rate of I-131 Therapy: The radioactive iodine treatment we provide has a remarkably high success rate, often curing 95% or more of hyperthyroid cats with a single injection. This offers a true cure, unlike medications which only manage symptoms. Customers praise the "HIGH rate of success" and often witness significant positive changes in their cats, as seen with Logan's story.
  • Compassionate and Attentive Staff: Our team is consistently praised for their kindness, attentiveness, and genuine care for feline patients. Reviewers highlight staff members like Kayris, describing them as "wonderful" and noting that "Caring staff gave Emma nothing to complain about." This creates a supportive environment for both cats and their worried owners.
  • Seamless Coordination with Referring Veterinarians: We understand the importance of your relationship with your primary vet. We maintain close communication, providing updates and ensuring a smooth transition of care before, during, and after treatment. One client noted, "they kept in touch with our regular vet... even our vet who use to work at a animal hospital that offered this service directly was impressed!"
  • Long-Term Positive Outcomes: The effectiveness of the I-131 treatment often leads to long-term health improvements and increased longevity for treated cats, as beautifully illustrated by Emma's multiple updates over years, showing her "still doing quite well and still full of purr" even at 18+.
  • Reduced Stress for Pets and Owners: The non-invasive nature of the injection, compared to daily pilling or surgery, reduces stress for both cats and their owners. While a short hospitalization is required, the overall process is designed to be as calm and efficient as possible.
  • Clear Communication and Support: Our team provides thorough explanations of the process and is readily available to answer questions, alleviating anxiety for pet parents.
