Small Animal Surgical Service of CT specializes in a wide array of advanced surgical procedures for small animals, primarily dogs and cats. Their focus on surgical excellence means they are equipped to handle complex cases that may require a specialist’s touch. While an exhaustive list of all procedures isn't publicly available, the nature of a "Small Animal Surgical Service" implies a comprehensive offering in the field of veterinary surgery. Based on common needs for specialized veterinary surgery and the expertise of a board-certified veterinary surgeon, we can infer a broad range of services, including:
- Orthopedic Surgery: This includes procedures related to bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons. Common orthopedic issues in pets often require surgical intervention, such as addressing cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tears (a common knee injury), patellar luxation (dislocated kneecap), fracture repairs, and addressing hip or elbow dysplasia.
- Soft Tissue Surgery: This category encompasses procedures involving internal organs, skin, and other non-bone structures. Examples include abdominal surgeries (e.g., foreign body removal, tumor excisions), thoracic (chest) surgeries, mass removals (benign and malignant tumors), reconstructive surgeries, and procedures related to the urinary or reproductive systems.
- Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Interpretation: While not a direct surgical procedure, a surgical service often works closely with advanced imaging like X-rays, CT scans, and sometimes MRI, to accurately diagnose conditions and plan surgical interventions. The precision of diagnosis is crucial for successful surgical outcomes.
- Pre-Surgical Consultations and Evaluations: A thorough assessment of a pet's health before surgery, including physical examinations and necessary diagnostics, is paramount for patient safety and successful outcomes.
- Post-Operative Care and Management: Guidance on wound care, pain management, and rehabilitation recommendations are essential components of comprehensive surgical care, ensuring a smooth recovery for the pet.
Small Animal Surgical Service of CT stands out for several key reasons, making it a preferred choice for pet owners seeking specialized surgical care:
- Specialized Expertise: The practice is led by a board-certified veterinary surgeon, Dr. David T. White, DVM, DACVS (SA). This credential, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Small Animal), signifies the highest level of training, experience, and expertise in veterinary surgery. It assures pet owners that their beloved animals are in the hands of a true specialist.
- Focus on Surgical Excellence: Unlike general veterinary practices that perform some surgeries, a dedicated surgical service concentrates solely on advanced surgical procedures. This specialization means they have optimized facilities, equipment, and protocols specifically for surgery, leading to higher standards of care.
- Personalized and Detailed Communication: Customer reviews highlight excellent communication, with one mentioning "ease of communication via email" and another noting that "Dr. White was patient, explained everything in detail, and was thorough." This commitment to clear and empathetic communication helps alleviate owner anxiety and ensures they are fully informed about their pet's condition and treatment plan.
- Thorough and Attentive Care: The reviews underscore a high level of attentiveness to the individual needs of each pet. The mention of Dr. White taking a "risk of infection... very seriously" demonstrates a proactive and meticulous approach to patient safety and recovery. Similarly, "thorough in checking the area that needed treatment" speaks to a detailed examination process.
- Cost-Effectiveness Compared to Other Centers: One reviewer explicitly noted that "The other surgery centers in CT were also costlier than here." While specialized care is an investment, the possibility of receiving expert surgical services at a potentially more accessible price point compared to other specialized centers in Connecticut is a significant advantage for pet owners.
- Addressing Misdiagnoses: The experience of a pet receiving a "misdiagnosis from another vet" and then finding accurate and effective care here speaks volumes about the diagnostic acumen and surgical precision offered by Small Animal Surgical Service of CT.

Small Animal Surgical Service of CT Reviews
We're so happy to have found this doctor! She had a misdiagnosis from another vet. The other surgery centers in CT were also costlier than here. Her care was excellent, with ease of communication via email. She also had a risk of infection, which the doctor took very seriously. Thank you for taking care of Toffee 😌
Oct 15, 2024 · Joanna GrzymalaGoing in for the first time for a consultation. One of my dogs has an issue with her knee cap. Dr. White was patient, explained everything is detail, and was thorough in checking the area that needed treatment. Great service!
Mar 28, 2025 · MargaretAs a general practice veterinarian in CT, I have many boarded surgeons to choose from. When my dog, Pippa, needed a boarded surgeon, Dr. David White is who I chose. He will take care of your pet as if they are his own. He cares! He is an exceptional surgeon. Importantly, his is the only veterinary surgical practice in CT that is not corporate owned. A distinction, which translates to veterinary care as it was meant to be!! You can feel confident about every aspect of care they provide to your pet. They are Pippa approved.
May 27, 2023 · stacy DudekMy pup had her leg amputated there. The staff was amazing with me and her. Very patient with my million questions. Dr. White was very reassuring and kind and I just knew my pup was in the right hands. They always answered my calls and kept me updated during her one night stay. The office is bright and welcoming and totally gives one a sense of peace during a stressful time. I would 100% recommend to any pet parent looking for surgery for their pet!
May 20, 2024 · Karolin “Karol T”I just recently had Dr. White do surgery on my 6 year old Japanese chin because he was panting almost constantly. Due to the breeds characteristic flat face can lead to this condition and is not uncommon. All I knew really about this type of surgery that anesthesia could be risky for these flat faced breeds. Any person I talked to had some kind of sad story about the effect of the anesthesia.on their pet. I held off for 2 years until I had to do something. Dr. White was highly recommended to me by my vet at Bolton Veterinary Hospital. We talked about the anesthesia possible problems but that it was a rare occurrence and many factors, such as age and other problems were more of a contributing factor. I had great confidence in my vet at bolton. After speaking with Dr. White for at the consultation, I had no worries. He was very personable as was his staff. My pup came out great. It has only been one week but listening to him breathe without his tongue hanging out is a real pleasure.. The Dr and his staff said they were readily available for any questions or concerns. The office was extremely clean and it gave more of a feeling of someone’s home than a sterile surgical hospital. The total experience made me feel very comfortable and confident that Dr. White was the solution to my pups problem. My advice to anyone out there that has a dog with a flat face and panting without any exertion is to make an appointment with Dr. White. I wish I had done this years ago and didn’t listen to those people.
