It is important to acknowledge the severe negative reviews that highlight concerns about animal welfare and cleanliness. While these indicate significant issues experienced by some customers, the services listed above are what the store would typically aim to provide as a general pet store. As of recent public information, the Better Business Bureau indicates this business is out of business.
---Snails To Tails, as a local pet store in Brookfield, IL, has presented varying customer experiences, leading to a complex set of features and highlights from the provided reviews.
- Variety of Live Animals: One significant aspect of Snails To Tails was its offering of a diverse range of live animals, including bearded dragons, birds, snakes, fish, and rodents. For locals seeking specific types of pets, this variety could have been a key draw, potentially providing options not found in larger chain stores.
- Owner's Knowledge and Dedication (Conflicting Views): One review praised a "knowledgeable owner that cares about his animals," suggesting a personal approach and expertise in pet care. This could have been a highlight for customers seeking specialized advice and a relationship with a local business owner. However, this positive view directly conflicts with multiple severe negative reviews describing extreme neglect.
- Competitive Pricing: The positive review also noted that "The prices were the same or better too," indicating that Snails To Tails aimed to offer competitive pricing on its products, which is always an attractive feature for cost-conscious pet owners.
- Small Business Support: For some customers, the decision to shop at Snails To Tails was driven by a desire to "support small business over big chains." This highlights the appeal of local commerce and the personal connection often sought with independent retailers.
- Animal Welfare Concerns (Major Highlight/Critique): It is crucial to acknowledge that multiple highly critical reviews describe "horrific" conditions, "animals in such bad condition," "dehydrated" animals, "overgrown" beaks, and "dead" animals, suggesting severe neglect and unsanitary conditions. These alarming accounts from several customers directly contradict any notion of proper animal welfare practices.
- Cleanliness Issues (Major Highlight/Critique): Reviews also directly cite significant cleanliness problems, with descriptions of "several layers of their own feces" and a "tremendous amount of flies." While one review stated the place "could certainly be cleaner," it also claimed it wasn't as bad as others implied, highlighting a stark discrepancy in customer perceptions regarding store hygiene.
Based on the provided reviews, the features and highlights of Snails To Tails are heavily polarized, with strong criticisms regarding animal welfare and store conditions directly conflicting with a single positive account. Please note that recent public information, specifically from the Better Business Bureau, indicates that this business is currently out of business.
---While Snails To Tails was a local pet store, public information now suggests the business is out of business. However, for historical context and based on the provided data, here are the contact details that were available:
Address: 3744 1/2 Grand Blvd, Brookfield, IL 60513, USA
Phone: (708) 387-9228
Please be aware that due to the business likely being out of operation, these contact methods may no longer be active or monitored. It is always advisable to verify the current status of any business before attempting to visit or contact them.
---While historically Snails To Tails aimed to serve the Brookfield community as a local pet store, it is important to provide a conclusion based on all available public data, including the very strong, and conflicting, customer reviews and the current business status. For locals in the Illinois region, particularly in Brookfield and surrounding areas, the suitability of Snails To Tails is complex and, as of recent information from the Better Business Bureau, the business is indicated to be out of business.
In its operational period, the store offered a variety of animals and pet supplies, which could have been a convenient option for residents seeking specific pets like fish, rodents, or reptiles, along with their basic necessities. The presence of a local, independent store often appeals to those who wish to "support small business over big chains," fostering a sense of community and personalized service. One positive review highlighted a "knowledgeable owner" and competitive pricing, suggesting that for some customers, the store provided value and expertise. This aspect could have made it a suitable choice for locals looking for a direct, owner-operated pet supply experience.
However, it is crucial to address the severe concerns raised in multiple highly negative reviews. These accounts detail alleged "horrific" conditions, "neglect and abuse" of animals, and unsanitary environments, with descriptions of dehydrated animals, overgrown beaks, and even deceased animals. Such grave accusations about animal welfare and store cleanliness would, for many, render the establishment unsuitable regardless of its local presence or pricing. The calls to "call the town" and "get the animals the help they need" highlight a serious perceived failure in animal care standards.
Therefore, while Snails To Tails historically aimed to be a local option for pet supplies, the significant and widespread animal welfare concerns reported by multiple customers presented a critical issue for its suitability to locals who prioritize the ethical treatment of animals. The current status of the business as likely out of business, as per the Better Business Bureau, indicates that these past issues may have led to its closure. For Illinois residents, the choice of a pet store should always align with strong animal welfare standards and reliable service, which these negative reviews suggest Snails To Tails struggled to consistently meet.

Snails To Tails Reviews
This place is literally horrific. I’ve never seen animals in such bad condition. This place needs to be shutdown. There was a bearded dragon so dehydrated it’s eyes were swollen shut. The poor birds were sitting in several layers of there own feces and there beaks were so overgrown one of them broke. Something must be dead in side somewhere because there was a tremendous amount of flies in there. In one of the small tanks when you first walk in there was a snake that has been dead so long it looks to be mummified. This isn’t something that happens overnight. This is months upon months of neglect, if not years. The store came recommended on Facebook and I was excited to see it. Couldn’t have been further from my expectations. Please call the town on this place and get the animals the help they need and deserve. This place needs to be shut down for the health and safety of the animals inside. If you need a pet store in the area go to The Pet Supplies Plus in Berwyn(Harlem/Cermak) or Oak Park Natural. Both are way better choices. Please help these animals and contact the Village of Brookfield to have this businesses license revoked. These animals deserve so much better. They don’t deserve the neglect and abuse they are receiving.
Jul 18, 2022 · Aleksandra OlszewskiA knowledgeable owner that cares about his animals. I saw previous reviews that said there's dead animals, and that wasn't true from my experience. I didn't see a single dead fish, and I kept looking at the rodent cages and they were all clearly alive. The place could certainly be cleaner, but it's a pet shop and a small business that I will try to support over big chains. The prices were the same or better too. Overall pleased with my experience.
Dec 08, 2019 · A GowgielWe wanted to support local and check out snails and tails to grow our aquarium. I was nervous that we would have similar experiences as other reviewers and that proved to be true. We arrived around 2pm on Sunday (hours listed as open until 5pm), and they were closed. I guess it would be nice to know what practiced hours are so we can plan accordingly. Snails and Tails comes highly recommended on community pages, unfortunately, it seems it’s hit or miss whether they’re honoring their posted hours.
Apr 25, 2021 · Lindsay SaylorsIt is pretty messy in the shop, but the fish are nice fish. The owner knows a lot about fish and is very nice to talk to.*UPDATE* I just went in yesterday and the store has been cleaned up a lot!! A really nice selection of healthy looking fish, lizards, and mice. There are NO dead mice in the cages. They even sell live food cultures! I would highly recommend you going in. The only problem is a ell, but that is too be expected in a store with fish lizards and mice.
Oct 26, 2019 · Anthony PerryThe owner is very kind and knowledgeable. He has tons of experience with numerous varieties of animals and is always willing to offer good advice. He steers you toward the product or animal he thinks is right for you, not the one that will make him the most money. I've been going to this store for years and would highly recommend it to anyone keeping fish!
