Altered Tails Barnhart Clinic, Phoenix Introduce
For pet owners and animal advocates in Arizona, the issue of pet overpopulation and the high cost of veterinary care are significant concerns. Altered Tails Barnhart Clinic in Phoenix stands as a beacon of hope and a vital community resource, working to address both of these challenges head-on. As a non-profit organization, its mission is to provide accessible and affordable spay/neuter solutions for both companion animals and free-roaming cats, aiming to eliminate euthanasia as a form of population control. This article will provide an in-depth look at what makes this clinic a crucial part of the Arizona animal welfare landscape, detailing its services, unique features, and the powerful impact it has on the community.
Altered Tails is more than just a spay/neuter clinic; it’s a dedicated team of professionals who are passionate about making veterinary care accessible to everyone. The reviews from local pet parents and rescue organizations consistently praise the staff for their kindness, knowledge, and compassion. As one first-time dog owner shared, they were initially nervous about their pup’s surgery, but the staff was "incredibly patient and informative," providing clear pre-op and recovery instructions. The team's thoughtfulness, such as providing sedatives to a nervous pup and offering reassuring updates, highlights their commitment to making the experience as safe and stress-free as possible for both the pet and the owner. This high level of care, combined with their affordable pricing, has earned them a reputation as a trusted provider in the Phoenix area.
The clinic's focus on low-cost services for spay/neuter is particularly important for the Arizona community, where the climate and high population density can contribute to animal overpopulation. By offering services that are on average 75% lower than full-service veterinary providers, Altered Tails ensures that more pet owners can afford this essential procedure, which in turn helps reduce the number of unwanted animals entering local shelters.
Altered Tails Barnhart Clinic is conveniently located at 950 W. Hatcher Rd in Phoenix, AZ 85021. The clinic is set up with a specific entry point to streamline the process for clients. You are instructed to "enter through gated parking lot from N 11th Ave side." This clear guidance helps manage the flow of traffic and ensures a smooth drop-off and pick-up process, especially on busy clinic days.
The clinic is committed to accessibility, featuring a wheelchair-accessible entrance, a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. These amenities ensure that all community members, regardless of their physical abilities, can access their vital services. Given their high volume of patients, appointments are required and recommended to ensure that the staff can provide dedicated attention to each pet. This structured system helps the non-profit organization operate efficiently and effectively, managing the large number of animals they serve each day.
Altered Tails specializes in high-quality, low-cost services with a focus on population control, but also offers a range of other essential health services. Their comprehensive approach ensures that pets not only receive a necessary surgery but are also protected from common health issues.
- Spay & Neuter Surgeries: The core of their mission, they provide safe and professional spay and neuter surgeries for both dogs (dog spay, dog neuter) and cats (cat neuter, cat spay), including specific programs for feral cats (TNR surgeries).
- Vaccine Clinics: The clinic offers a variety of low-cost vaccines to protect pets from common diseases. These include Rabies vaccination, DA2PP vaccine, FVRCP vaccine, and FelV vaccine (Feline Leukemia), which are crucial for preventing the spread of illness in the community.
- Preventative Care: In addition to vaccines, they provide other preventative services such as flea/tick and heartworm preventative, blood work and blood tests, and testing for Feline FIV/FeLV.
- Additional Services: The clinic also offers important secondary services such as microchipping, nail trims, and pain control medication for surgical patients, ensuring a more comfortable recovery.
- TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) Program: They work closely with individuals and rescue groups to perform TNR surgeries for community cats, which is a key strategy in humanely controlling the feral cat population in the Phoenix area.
Altered Tails Barnhart Clinic's features and highlights are what truly set it apart as a vital part of the Arizona community.
- Non-Profit Mission: As a non-profit organization, the clinic's primary goal is not profit but rather to serve the community and its animals. This mission-driven approach means that they can offer services at an extremely low cost, making them accessible to a broader range of pet owners, including those who might not otherwise be able to afford spay/neuter surgery.
- Specialization and Expertise: By focusing almost exclusively on spay and neuter surgeries, the clinic’s staff and surgeons have developed a high level of expertise in these procedures. This specialization, combined with a high volume of surgeries, leads to a safe and efficient process for companion animals and feral cats alike.
- Community Impact: The clinic's work has a direct and measurable impact on the issue of pet overpopulation in Maricopa County. By sterilizing thousands of animals each year, they contribute significantly to reducing the number of animals in shelters and the euthanasia rate.
- Comprehensive Low-Cost Services: In addition to surgery, the clinic's low-cost vaccine and microchip clinics provide essential preventative care that is crucial for a pet's health. This ensures that even those with limited financial resources can provide basic medical care for their pets.
- Support for Pet Owners: The customer reviews highlight a staff that is not only professional but also deeply empathetic. They take the time to answer questions, provide clear instructions, and offer reassurance, which is invaluable for nervous or first-time pet owners.

February 15 · Brittney HuffI highly recommend Altered Tails for pet spaying and neutering. As first-time dog pawrents, we were nervous about our pup’s first surgery, but the staff was incredibly patient and informative. They answered all our questions and explained everything clearly, from pre-op to recovery. We opted for the pre-surgery bloodwork, and during that time, the staff noticed our pup was very excitable. They thoughtfully provided sedatives to help calm her before surgery, making the experience more comfortable and less stressful for her.On the day of the surgery, we felt at ease leaving her in their care. When we called for an update, the team kindly reassured us that she did great and was recovering well. They notified us when she was ready to be picked up, and both drop-off and pick-up were straightforward. The discharge instructions were clear and easy to follow.Affordable, safe, and stress-free, with optional add-on services too. Thank you, Altered Tails, for taking such great care of our fur baby!
August 26 · Christina HaqueThis place had great customer service. The website to book appointments was easy to use. This place was clean and the staff were so wonderful. The greeting you immediately as you walk in with a smile on their faces. If your look for low cost neuter and spay this is the place to go. Most definitely would return. They did such an awesome job with my 2 dogs Blackie and Brownie.
July 11 · Jessica ChambersCheck in was quick and easy. Staff was friendly. They were very thorough with reviewing the information. When I had a concern about my dog's incision from spay, I was able to text the number provided and they answered my questions and provided suggestions. Would definitely recommend and use their services again.
May 31 · Leah TringaliClass. First we got our little man neutered about a week ago and we got there before open and they attended to us before they were officially open so nice of them...our little man then got fleas somehow and they were so nice to just take care of the issue. Thank you for going above and beyond!
