Animal Center for Emergency and Specialty (ACES) Introduce
For pet owners across the Wisconsin region, especially those in the greater Madison area, knowing where to turn when your primary veterinarian's office is closed can be a source of significant anxiety. The Animal Center for Emergency and Specialty (ACES) in Madison, WI, fills this critical need, offering specialized Emergency veterinarian service with a focus on Urgent Care and Veterinary Oncology. ACES is designed to bridge the gap between routine care and true, life-threatening emergency hospitalization, providing timely and compassionate treatment for pets with unexpected illness or injury that arises outside of regular business hours.
Unlike a traditional 24-hour emergency room that must prioritize critical, life-saving trauma, ACES operates as an urgent care and specialty facility. Their primary focus is on non-life-threatening issues—like sudden lethargy, persistent vomiting, diarrhea, minor injuries, or acute infections—that cannot wait for a primary vet appointment but are stable enough to be scheduled. This strategic focus often results in minimal wait times, ensuring your beloved companion gets seen promptly and receives the attention they need without the stress of an overloaded emergency lobby.
The clinic also serves a vital role by offering high-quality Specialty Services, notably Oncology. This department provides comprehensive, personalized, and supportive cancer care for pets, including diagnosis, staging, chemotherapy, and crucial pain control and quality-of-life management. This level of dedicated specialty care, coupled with their urgent services, establishes ACES as a key resource for complex and time-sensitive pet healthcare in the region. Their mission is built on empathy, honesty, and understanding, ensuring that the human side of pet care is addressed with as much compassion as the medical side.
As a local business, ACES identifies as a women-owned practice, bringing a deeply compassionate and supportive culture to the often-stressful environment of urgent pet care. This focus on client support is repeatedly highlighted by customers who praise the staff not just for their medical expertise but for their kindness and patience when owners are experiencing emotional distress over their pet's condition. This holistic approach to patient and client well-being makes ACES a trusted name for urgent and specialty veterinary needs in Madison, WI.
The facility's address and operational hours for urgent care are as follows:
Address: 5458 Buttonwood Dr, Madison, WI 53718, USA

- Mobility Access: The entire facility is highly accessible, featuring a Wheelchair accessible entrance, a convenient Wheelchair accessible parking lot, comfortable Wheelchair accessible seating in the waiting areas, and a Wheelchair accessible restroom.
- Amenities: The commitment to comfort and inclusivity is further seen in the availability of a Gender-neutral restroom, in addition to standard Restroom facilities.
Due to the urgent nature of their services, calling ahead is strongly advised to ensure your pet's condition is appropriate for urgent care and to allow the staff to prepare for your arrival, minimizing any potential wait time.
- Urgent Care (Evening/Overnight):
- Diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of acute illnesses, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, coughing, skin infections, and minor trauma.
- Point-of-care Ultrasound and Radiography for rapid internal diagnostics.
- On-site In-house analyzers and utilization of a reference lab for fast and comprehensive blood work and testing.
- Management of pain and administration of medications for sudden conditions.
- Procedures such as inducing vomiting (for stable, non-corrosive ingestions) and wound care.
- Stabilization and transfer protocols for true life-threatening emergencies (e.g., bloat, severe respiratory distress) that require a 24-hour critical care hospital.
- Veterinary Oncology (Specialty Service):
- Cancer Diagnosis and Staging, including bone marrow aspirates.
- Personalized Chemotherapy protocols.
- Comprehensive Pain Control and Quality of Life Management for chronic conditions.
- Multimodal and Immunotherapy approaches to cancer treatment.
- Primary Care Overflow & Advanced Diagnostics:
- Outpatient diagnostic services by appointment, including abdominal, thoracic, and cervical Ultrasounds and Echocardiography (heart ultrasound).
- Endoscopic Retrieval of Foreign Objects—a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery for certain ingestions.
- Non-emergent Surgery for stable patients, such as mass removals, amputations, and organ biopsies.
- Post-operative monitoring for stable patients requiring extra hours of care following a procedure at their primary vet.
- Dedicated Urgent Care Model: By focusing exclusively on non-life-threatening urgent needs, ACES is often able to provide faster and more predictable service than true emergency hospitals, which must always prioritize trauma cases. This minimizes stressful waiting periods for clients and pets.
- High-Level Specialty Oncology: The presence of a dedicated Oncology department provides a much-needed local resource for pet cancer diagnosis and treatment, ensuring continuity of specialty care for long-term health management.
- Exceptional Client and Patient Support: The clinic's core values of empathy and compassion are evident in customer experiences, where the staff is consistently praised for their emotional support, patience, and clear communication during highly stressful and worried moments. This focus extends to openly discussing payment options and treatment plans.
- Commitment to Accessibility and Inclusivity: The business goes above and beyond with its accessibility features, including not only comprehensive wheelchair access but also a Gender-neutral restroom, signaling a commitment to serving all members of the Wisconsin community.
- Flexible Payment Options: Understanding the unexpected costs of urgent care, ACES accepts major Credit cards, Debit cards, and NFC mobile payments. While they require payment upon service, they are known to be patient and helpful in assisting clients to manage their financial obligations.

Furthermore, their specialization in Veterinary Oncology and advanced diagnostics like Endoscopic Retrieval provides a vital safety net and next-level care options that may not be available at a general practice. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1100% recommendI called before going in because I'm always overreacting to my dogs mood changes, but this day he hadn't lifted his head all afternoon which was super weird. On the phone, they suggested to bring him in because his symptoms were so broad that they couldn't diagnose him without getting their hands on him. We made an appointment and arrived almost 30 minutes early but they got us right into a room. Everyone was so warm and friendly, helpful, and super loving toward our baby boy. We ended up being there for a couple of hours, but it was because they took the time to understand what was going on. He got meds and a prescription for rest ❤️ below he is pictured resting and on drugs, but generally happy
July 26 · Chloe LoveridgeI brought my dog here because he ingested some trash and they induced vomiting for him. he's totally fine now, they took good care of him. the main reason I want to give a good review is because they also took amazing care of me. I was in extreme emotional distress, just worried about my dog and they were so kind and patient with me. they were kind while I struggled to figure out payment for his care. I've been to a few emergency vets in my time and these guys were by far the best experience I've had. the doctors, techs, and the woman who checked us in were all amazing. the woman at check in named Jessie talked to me while I waited to hear if my dog was ok, and she was so calm and sweet and I just want to express my gratitude for her specifically.
August 15 · Shainah ConawayEveryone here was incredibly kind, empathetic, and very thorough in answering all of our questions. The care of our dog was gentle, loving, and they gave us all of our options upfront. Jessie gave our dog sooo much love and made her feel so comfortable the whole time, as did Dr Cat and the rest of the team! Their hours are great since most local vets close at 6.
August 20 · Sydney EkstromWhat a teriffic resource for the east side! The facility is new, clean, bright, with advanced features and a wonderful, caring staff.Vet Tech Crystal was super with my sick cat - patient, low-key, and gentle.Dr Lisa was the same - competent, kind, understanding, and confidence-inspiring.Their phone/intake team were great; they were knowledgeable and professional and kind. No waiting on arrival to get taken to a treatment room; the tech was prompt and thorough, and everyone kept me updated as the evening progressed. I recommend ACES without hesitation!
July 15 · Lynne PittsThe staff are so incredibly passionate, knowledgeable, trustworthy, detailed and dedicated to provide the best medical, compassionate care for my small dog. The staff was also attentive to me being very worried about my fur baby who wasn't feeling well! This team is by far the best of the best in what they do! I will sleep better knowing that they truly care deeply and are available if/when needed! Seriously! The best care team ever!
