The hospital's approach to pet care and client communication is a notable highlight. As one customer review attests, the staff can be very helpful and accommodating, even in a frantic situation. The ability of the staff member to fit an emergency appointment in for an attacked dog, even though the hospital is not a dedicated emergency vet, showcases a commitment to helping clients in times of need. The personalized follow-up, such as a welcoming card and a follow-up phone call to check on the pet's recovery, demonstrates an extra bit of effort that can make a significant difference in a client's experience. The long-term relationships that the hospital builds with its clients are also a key feature, as evidenced by a customer who had been with them for over eight years. The hospital’s aim to provide compassionate care is central to its mission. Additionally, the availability of boarding and grooming services, including a skilled groomer, adds a layer of convenience for pet owners. While these services offer convenience, it is also important to consider the varying experiences customers have with different aspects of the hospital's offerings, as highlighted in some feedback.

Choosing a veterinary hospital is a major decision for any pet owner, and it's essential to consider a range of factors before making a long-term commitment. Dominion Veterinary Hospital, located in Chesapeake, offers a comprehensive set of services that can cover most of a pet's medical needs. The hospital's ability to be a life-saver in an urgent situation, as described in a positive review, shows that their staff can rise to the occasion and provide care even when their primary focus is not emergency medicine. The effort to build personal connections through follow-up calls and welcome cards also speaks to a desire for compassionate, client-focused care. However, it is equally important to acknowledge the less positive experiences shared by some clients, particularly regarding the boarding and grooming services. One detailed review highlights a situation where a dog was injured during a short stay, and the client felt there was a lack of accountability and empathy from the staff. This experience, which ended a long-standing relationship, is a crucial piece of information for potential clients. It suggests that while the medical and emergency care may be excellent, other services may have inconsistent quality. A lack of apology and a condescending tone, as reported, can severely damage trust. Therefore, what is worth choosing about Dominion Veterinary Hospital is its robust medical services and compassionate emergency handling, but it is also worth considering the differing experiences with their boarding and grooming operations. The best approach for a pet owner in the Virginia area would be to assess their specific needs and priorities, and perhaps use the hospital for its veterinary expertise while keeping the mixed reviews on other services in mind to make a fully informed choice for their beloved animal companion.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I recently had to visit Dominion when my dog was unexpectedly attacked during our morning walk. I was frantically googling emergency vets and Dominion was one of the results. I got on the phone and despite Dominion turning out to not be an emergency vet (whoops!) the staff member on the phone was able to fit me in for an appointment that same morning, and was very helpful. At the appointment we were well taken care of, even though my dog is reactive with vets, and even more so that day thanks to the heightened emotions from the attack. I felt so reassured and my best buddy is completely fine now. Dominion has since sent a card welcoming us to the practice and done a follow-up call to check and make sure my dog is OK. I like that extra bit of effort.
July 23 · K HWe have always loved Dominion as our vet for 8+ years and multiple dogs. Juan is also an excellent groomer. However, due to our recent boarding experience, we will not be returning for any services. We boarded our dogs there because we trust them. When I picked up my 2 dogs after only a 4-night stay and bath, I got home to find one of them had multiple bloody sores on three of her legs (pics included). These were large enough I could see them easily, yet no one noticed them while bathing her or notified us when we picked her up. I called immediately and was told to bring her back so they could look at the areas.Rather than apologizing or taking any accountability, I was told it was likely from the rough floors in the kennel or the cleaning solution they use and that the employees don’t check the dogs for wounds or sores unless they see “obvious blood.” I reminded her that my dog had a bath that same morning and that they are, in fact, bloody and obvious. I was able to notice the wounds from a distance. To which I was condescendingly told, I’m only looking at one dog, they are trying to keep up with 40. I reminded her, I’m not the one running the business and they are getting paid to take care of them. If you can’t keep 40 dogs safe and healthy, you shouldn’t accept that many.I told Dr. Kent that we bring our dogs there because we trust them and paid $500 for boarding, just to now have a dog that is injured and requires antibiotics. She then acted like she was doing me a favor by telling me she would not charging me for the antibiotics. She left and did not return, instead sending the vet tech back in to give me the medicine and instructions. All that was needed was an apology, some accountability and reassurance that the issue was going to be looked into so that it could be avoided with other dogs. Instead, I was treated like I was over-reacting and expecting too much. I cannot continue to recommend them as I have in the past.
July 29 · Amanda QuillinWe moved to the area and this was the closest vet so we tried them out and ended up establishing our dogs here. I couldnt be more grateful 🙏 They are able to get us in very quickly when needed and the vets are very thorough with their services. Kristy the tech is so sweet to our pups and Carroll at the front desk is always very helpful and prompt. The building is new and very clean and there is always plenty of parking spots. Also plenty of grass area to walk the pups before appointments. I dont recommend many veternarians and I HIGHLY recommend them!
July 21 · Shawna FitzgeraldThey are wonderful. They took such good care of my baby girl, Jezabelle, for many years...up to the point it came time to say goodbye. So a few weeks later, I was given two kittens. Without any hesitation, I immediately made an appointment for them. Wouldn't go anywhere else.
December 25 · Shannon BailieI have been taking my furbabies to Dominion Vet for over 25 years. Dr Kent & Dr Casey are professional, compassionate, friendly and most of all - they take phenomenal care of my pets! The staff is always so welcoming and extremely knowledgable. The clinic is clean and the services are very well priced. I have recommended this practice to many people and will continue to do so! It takes alot for me to trust others with my pets but I have 100% confidence in this vet clinic. I highly recommend!! They are conveniently located in the Grassfield area of Chesapeake across from Grassfield High School.
