In Louisville, Metropolitan Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service stands as a beacon of hope and healing, providing a level of care that goes far beyond a typical family vet. This is a specialized animal hospital designed to handle everything from urgent, life-threatening crises to complex, chronic medical conditions. Their team of board-certified specialists and emergency veterinarians work tirelessly to provide compassionate and effective treatment, ensuring that pets like Milo, who faced a life-or-death situation, receive the care they need to recover.
Unlike a general practice, Metropolitan Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment technology, including an in-house laboratory and intensive care unit (ICU). This allows their staff to quickly and accurately diagnose problems, even in the most dire circumstances. As one pet owner shared, they were able to diagnose a complete urinary blockage in their dog, Milo, within minutes of arrival, a swift action that ultimately saved his life. This dedication to rapid and effective care is a hallmark of their emergency service, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For specialty services that are not an emergency, the hospital operates on an appointment-based schedule, often working in partnership with your primary care veterinarian to provide the best possible outcome.
The level of communication and empathy shown by the staff is also a standout feature. Pet owners who have had to leave their animals for extended stays, such as Dex the Shih Tzu, have praised the staff for their genuine kindness and constant updates. The team understands that entrusting your pet to a hospital is a stressful experience, and they make every effort to keep you informed and reassured. From regular phone calls to a genuine bond formed with staff members like the veterinary technician Madge, the human-animal connection is at the heart of their practice. They don’t just treat the animal; they support the entire family through what can be a traumatic experience. Their mission is to partner with pet owners and their family veterinarians to provide the highest standard of care available, ensuring that even in the most challenging moments, your pet is in the best hands.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1When our hometown emergency vet turned down our sweet Milo because they were full and had no openings, we drove the two hours to Louisville to save his life…and save his life they did!Milo was near death when we arrived there and within less than 20 minutes they had diagnosed him (a complete urinary blockage), and began the treatment he needed. The doctors and staff were very courteous and helpful at all times. We received phone calls twice a day durning his three day stay, as well as being treated wonderfully if we would call to check on him additional time. They did a great job educating us as to what the near future might look like, and in fact they were exactly right. He ended up having surgery (here locally) to hopefully permanently correct the problem. We have no doubt that, without Metropolitan, we would no longer have Milo with us and our lives would be a whole lot more empty. Five stars to this amazing emergency clinic!
June 26 · No Drama LlamaMy sweet, almost 4yr old, Shih Tzu, Dex has always been a healthy dog! He’s spunky, energetic, and full of personality. You can imagine my surprise when I woke up one morning to find him lethargic, running a fever, shivering and diarrhea. We took him to a local emergency vet who released him the next day. Our main vet saw him right away and immediately referred us to Metro. His white blood cell count was extremely low. The staff at Metro were amazing. From the first phone call all the way to saying Goodbye! They worked diligently to help my boy. Dr. Owens was fantastic. She took the time to answer my 900 questions and was reassuring. His main tech, Madge…let me tell you! LOVE this sweet lady! Compassionate, caring, and kind. She not only made us aware of the extra love she gave Dex but she was so genuine and nurturing with him. I will forever be grateful for all of them making our “nightmare” easier to navigate and handle.
May 09 · Mariah FenwickOur 1 year old Shihtzu had to have surgery to remove his left eye after an accident and metro vet took excellent care of him. And you get a 5% military discount so that’s an added bonus! Thanks for taking such good care of our boy! He’s healing great and back to his normal sweet self!
June 20 · Jody MorrisThis hospital did save my dogs life I feel like when he came down with HGE. There are a couple of things though that I highly didn’t appreciate. He had clearly been laying in his own urine after having an accident and was not properly cleaned. He had diarrhea still on his behind that was dried up. He has razor burns from having to be shaved which is avoidable. The medical work was fantastic and the price was understandable. Allowing him to lay around in his own filth while being ill and him receiving razor burn is really uncalled for, especially because what clients pay out of pocket. I waited an hour in the lobby for him and honestly thought he was getting cleaned up and everything for me. The staff was great and polite and helpful. The doctor did call and apologize about the situation which I appreciate, just still really upsetting to picture him like that. Still want to give 4 stars and would recommend this hospital to all.
May 27 · Miranda ZetkoUpdate: My dachshund had luxating patella surgery yesterday with Dr. Neat. Dr. Neat took his time explaining options. I chose to have surgery and they took great care of him. The techs and folks at the front desk were amazing!! I pray my baby will be back to running and playing soon.Listen!! My Baby is up and running and going for long walks. His surgeon and the staff were amazing! He loves Dr. Neat and Dr. Neat had to show me that I was the one stressed out and not my dog. My dog had chicken and rice and was spoiled while there. I would not hesitate to bring my Bosey back!
