Unfortunately, one of the worst nights of my life happened here. I brought my dog of almost 16 years in here to unexpectedly be put down after a major decline after his original vet was already closed. It was freezing outside and they took my suffering dog away from me in his bed and locked the doors and had me wait outside as I was sobbing. I was terrified I was going to lose my baby before they came and got me and did not want him to die alone. I had to knock on the door again and beg them to not let my dog die without me. We were met with zero compassion and I was not able to hold him as he passed away. Was told I had to sit on the floor with him while they administered the euthanizing agents.I worked in state prison as a nurse myself, and have never treated anyone with that lack of compassion. - Court Walters

Pets Er - Elizabeth Drewer DVM Introduce

For pet owners in Salisbury, Maryland, and across the Eastern Shore, knowing where to turn when a beloved animal experiences a sudden illness or injury outside of regular business hours is crucial. Pets ER - Elizabeth Drewer DVM is a dedicated emergency and urgent care veterinary facility, specifically designed to address these critical situations when your primary veterinarian is closed. This article will provide Maryland residents with an essential overview of Pets ER, detailing its specialized services, operating hours, location, and what to consider when facing a pet emergency. Understanding the unique role of an emergency veterinary hospital is key to ensuring your pet receives timely and appropriate care during their most vulnerable moments.

Pets ER is not a routine veterinary clinic; rather, it functions as an emergency hospital, focusing on providing immediate and intensive care for critically ill or injured small animals. This means they are equipped to handle urgent medical needs that cannot wait until your regular vet opens. Their primary goal is to stabilize pets in critical condition and provide prompt attention for other ailments that, while not immediately life-threatening, are painful or concerning to pet owners. They are staffed by licensed veterinarians and technicians who are on-site during all operating hours, ready to triage and treat emergency cases.

It is important to note that emergency veterinary care operates differently from routine veterinary services. Given the nature of emergencies, patient flow is managed on a triage basis, meaning the most critical or unstable patients are examined and treated before more stable or non-critical patients. While this system is designed to save lives, it can sometimes lead to wait times for less urgent cases. Additionally, discussions about treatment costs are a necessary part of emergency care, as these services are often intensive and can involve significant expenses. While one review described a highly distressing experience regarding compassion during an end-of-life situation, it's vital for pet owners to recognize the high-pressure environment of emergency medicine and to communicate their wishes and financial parameters clearly with the staff. Pets ER aims to provide vital care when it is most needed.

Location and Accessibility

Pets ER - Elizabeth Drewer DVM is conveniently located at 402 Punkin Ct, Salisbury, MD 21804, USA. The design and placement of an emergency veterinary hospital prioritize rapid access. During stressful situations, easy navigation and ample parking are critical, and the location on Punkin Court aims to provide this convenience. While they do accept walk-in patients during emergencies, calling ahead is always encouraged if possible. This allows their staff to prepare for your arrival and gather initial information, potentially saving precious time upon your arrival. Their dedicated operating hours, primarily during nights, weekends, and holidays, ensure that they are available when most primary care veterinarians are closed, filling a crucial need in the local Maryland community for after-hours care.

Services Offered

Pets ER - Elizabeth Drewer DVM specializes in emergency and urgent veterinary care for dogs and cats. Their services are focused on stabilization, diagnosis, and initial treatment for acute conditions. • Diagnostic Services: This includes in-house laboratory testing (such as blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exams) for rapid results, and digital radiology (X-rays) to assess internal injuries or conditions.

  • Referral Coordination: For conditions requiring specialized or long-term care (e.g., final fracture repair, chronic disease management), they will stabilize the patient and coordinate transfer back to your primary veterinarian or to a specialist.
  • End-of-Life Care: While these are difficult moments, they do provide compassionate euthanasia services for pets in profound suffering, particularly when other options are unavailable after hours. (It is important for owners to communicate their wishes clearly and seek clarification on hospital policies during these sensitive times).
