What is worth choosing
When selecting a veterinary clinic in Michigan, it’s important to find a practice that is both professionally capable and genuinely compassionate. St Johns Animal Clinic offers a broad range of services that appeal to a diverse clientele, from owners of small domestic pets to those with large animals. This versatility is a major benefit, as it allows for a single, convenient location for all of your veterinary needs. The clinic’s on-site services and comprehensive care model mean that you can rely on them for everything from a routine check-up to a more serious injury or illness. Their commitment to accessibility, with features like a wheelchair-accessible car park and entrance, also makes the clinic a practical and welcoming option for the entire community.
However, it is crucial for prospective clients to consider the full picture, including the feedback of other pet owners. While the clinic’s service offerings are extensive, some reviews raise significant concerns about the clinic's approach to client communication and patient handling. One client expressed deep disappointment and frustration, detailing multiple canceled appointments, one of which was with only 20 minutes' notice, after their dogs had already been medicated per instructions. This suggests a potential issue with scheduling and communication that could cause unnecessary stress for both pets and their owners. The same reviewer also noted that their dogs, even when medicated, exhibited "screaming, crying, and cowering in fear," which they attributed to a lack of comfort and trust with the staff. This raises questions about the clinic's methods for handling anxious or stressed animals. The clinic’s alleged failure to vaccinate their dogs and subsequent claim that it was the owner's choice, without any prior discussion, highlights a serious communication breakdown and a potential lack of accountability.
Another review echoes these concerns, describing an experience where an assistant told a client to re-home their high-energy, reactive dog after a failed attempt to muzzle it. The client felt the assistant showed a "total lack of empathy" and that the office staff was "unfriendly." This type of feedback is important because it speaks directly to the emotional and interpersonal aspects of veterinary care, which are as crucial as the medical procedures themselves. The contrast between the clinic’s stated services and some client experiences—where a client was told they were better off at a different clinic that offered a "chill protocol"—is significant. While the reviews do note that the front counter and vet techs were "incredible," the overall pattern of feedback suggests that clients seeking a high degree of empathy, clear communication, and consistent, stress-free handling for their pets might need to explore all their options. The decision to choose St Johns Animal Clinic should be made with a full understanding of these varying experiences, and perhaps with a preliminary visit to assess the staff's personal approach firsthand.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I had been using this clinic for about 9 yrs, for cats and recently my dog. My dog loved to go to vets, but recently he has developed an aversion to this and to women. My dog is high energy and sometimes reactive. They had me go into the exam room early because of his behavior. The assistant was unable to do the test he was scheduled for, due to my dog snarling, growling and trying to bite. An attempt to put a muzzle on failed. The assistant returned shortly and told me that I need to re-home my dog! Twice she said this to me, and she was’t nice about it! Needless to say I was very upset. The vet recommended that I medicate my dog before bringing him in next time, which I was ok with. Unfortunately, between the assistant who showed a total lack of empathy, and the unfriendly nature of office staff, I will not be back to this clinic. I have found a clinic in East Lansing that frequently treat dogs like mine. They gave an me instruction sheet on their “chill protocol”, meds to help my dog relax and most of all did not tell me I needed to re-home my dog! Although a further drive, this clinic is worth it. The are also less expensive!
August 19 · MarianneMy experience with this clinic has been deeply disappointing and frustrating. We brought our two Rottweilers here expecting professional care, but unfortunately, that was not what we received. The clinic canceled our appointments on more than three occasions — one of which was just 20 minutes before the scheduled time, after our dogs had already been medicated with trazodone per their instructions. This not only showed a lack of consideration for our time but also unnecessary stress and medication for our dogs with no benefit. When they finally kept one of my appointments my dog and I were left waiting in the car for over two hours — an unacceptable delay for any medical setting, especially for animals already under stress. What was even more concerning was the clinic’s insistence that our dogs be medicated with trazodone in order to be examined. Despite complying, our dogs would scream, cry, and cower in fear during visits, indicating a clear lack of comfort and trust in the staff. To make matters worse, the clinic failed to vaccinate our dogs and later claimed it was because I had chosen against it — something that was never communicated or discussed with me at any point. This was an assumption made without my consent or input. As veterinary professionals, I expect them to communicate clearly and prioritize the health and well-being of my pets. Instead, we were met with poor communication, assumptions, and a lack of accountability. We have since switched to a new veterinary clinic (Pinecrest Animal Hospital in Owosso), where the difference has been night and day. Our new vet is able to perform all necessary exams and vaccinations without the use of sedation. They treat our Rottweilers with the patience, respect, and professionalism every animal deserves.I cannot recommend this clinic based on our experience, and I urge them to reconsider their approach to both patient care and client communication. The ladies at the front counter and vet techs were incredible and the only positive about St. John’s animal clinic.
July 10 · Shanelle LukasI have been going to this place since I have moved here in the early 90s, they have always given my pets the attention that I would expect from these professionals. My cat, pictured has had her issues and even a trip to MSU.The saint johns animal clinic has always been up front with what to expect as to expense, because that's what concerns us as owners. We want the best for our animals but scream about cost, be real we would sell our home for a family member. Some pets are just that to most people.I had a small kitten with upper respiratory infection and they got little kitten in and administered some antibiotics, after almost a week she was adopted .So thank you Saint Johns Animal Clinic and all the staff!!!Look forward to many more years.
November 30 · Herman CalkinsAlways a great experience when we come, the staff are wonderful, patient, and get so excited to see our fur babies which puts a smile on our faces.
June 24 · Claire DeVriesConcern: I think they had some kind of diffuser or air purifier in the lobby with fragrance. Besides the fact it flared up my allergies, it smelled similar to eucalyptus & many essential oils are toxic to pets even in passing vapors & small amounts. Hope they remove it if essential oils really are being used to protect the pets.
