The Oncology Services - Springfield provides a comprehensive suite of veterinary oncology services, leveraging advanced techniques and a deep understanding of animal cancers. Their exclusive focus on oncology ensures that every aspect of their practice is optimized for treating these complex diseases.
- Medical Oncology: This is a core service, involving the use of various medications such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies to treat cancer. Their approach to chemotherapy in pets is designed to maximize quality of life, with protocols generally well-tolerated by animals, often leading to minimal side effects compared to human treatments.
- Diagnostic Imaging: Critical for accurate diagnosis and staging of cancer, they utilize advanced imaging technologies like MRI and CT scans to gain detailed insights into the tumor's location, size, and spread.
- Radiation Oncology: While specific details about on-site radiation therapy at the Springfield location should always be confirmed, The Oncology Services group generally provides access to radiation therapy, including stereotactic radiation therapy, through their network of specialists. This highly targeted treatment uses high-energy beams to precisely destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
- Surgical Oncology Referral/Coordination: They work closely with veterinary surgical specialists for tumor removal and other surgical interventions, coordinating a comprehensive treatment plan that may combine surgery with medical or radiation therapies.
- Clinical Trials: The Oncology Services is committed to advancing veterinary cancer care and frequently participates in clinical trials, offering eligible pets access to novel and experimental treatments that might not otherwise be available.
- Pain Management and Palliative Care: A vital part of oncology, they provide robust pain management strategies and palliative care to ensure pets maintain the best possible quality of life throughout their cancer journey, even when a cure is not possible. This includes managing symptoms, improving comfort, and offering support to pet families.
- Hospice Care and Euthanasia Services: For cases where treatment is no longer effective or desired, they offer compassionate hospice care, focusing on comfort and dignity, and provide respectful euthanasia services when the time comes, as highlighted by a customer review.
The Oncology Services - Springfield distinguishes itself with several key features that contribute to its reputation as a leading veterinary oncology center in Virginia:
- Exclusive Cancer Focus: Unlike general veterinary practices, their singular dedication to oncology means their entire team, resources, and knowledge base are concentrated on cancer care, leading to a deeper level of expertise.

This includes professionals like Dr. Janelle Nelson (as mentioned in a review for her compassionate euthanasia services), and others who bring extensive experience to the field.
- Collaborative Approach: They emphasize a team-based approach, working closely with primary care veterinarians and other veterinary specialists (such as surgeons and internal medicine specialists) to ensure a holistic and coordinated treatment plan for each patient.
- Advanced Treatment Options: Pet owners have access to a wide range of conventional and innovative cancer treatments, including various forms of chemotherapy, diagnostic imaging, and coordinated access to radiation therapy.
- Commitment to Research and Innovation: Their involvement in clinical trials underscores their dedication to advancing the field of veterinary oncology and offering cutting-edge solutions to their patients.

The Oncology Services - Springfield Reviews
Great Vet, Not Very Great PracticeMy cat Duff was seen about 6 weeks ago for an oncology consult after a pathology report found that he has skin cancer. I specifically requested the vet (I'll not identify her here) that saw Duff; she had been highly recommended by a friend, and she was fantastic. She recommended a 'watchful waiting' approach for signs of metastasis.I've noticed a mass under Duff's skin and called the practice, leaving a voice mail request to speak with the vet I saw previously. The mass may be nothing. Or it may be a tumor. It seems important to me to talk directly with a vet who has actually evaluated my cat.I got a return phone call from someone at the reception desk who told me that the doctor is very busy and I should take Duff to my local vet for evaluation. I later received a call from a nurse who told me the vet's recommendation was to bring the cat in for evaluation. This recommendation was made with no information about what I was finding other than my brief mention of a "mass" in my voice message. It seems clear that either the vet does not wish to speak to me, or the Oncology Service office procedures will not let her speak to me. I don't think a request for a few minutes conversation over the phone is unreasonable. In fact, it's routine at all vet practices I've known. For the record, Duff's evaluation 6 weeks ago cost approximately $750. I didn't mind spending the money, believing a quality practice deserved to be well-compensated.Given this 'brush off' by the office staff, I question the quality of the practice.
Dec 13, 2022 · Bob MiceliDr Janelle Nelson and her staff were very respectful and truly professional today when I had to euthanize my baby girl Pepper! Thank you for what you do for this community!
Sep 27, 2024 · Kent WalkerThe team at oncology service is top notch. When your fur baby is referred here it's devastating news, but they offer great advice and excellent care. My only regret in the process is I hesitated to think the opinions over. I wish I would have immediately started treatments, maybe we would have given our girl a little longer.
