Animal Behavior Consultants of Michigan Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For pet owners in Grand Rapids and the wider Michigan region dealing with complex or severe behavioral issues in their beloved animals, finding the right expertise can feel like an impossible task. Animal Behavior Consultants of Michigan, led by a highly credentialed and experienced team, provides a specialized solution to these challenges. This practice is not a typical general veterinarian; it is a dedicated veterinary care and pet trainer service that focuses on the intricate field of veterinary behavior. Their goal is to prevent, treat, and effectively manage behavior problems in companion animals, including dogs, cats, and even horses, to strengthen the human-animal bond.
The core of their practice is built on a deep understanding that behavioral problems are often complex and can have underlying medical causes. The team combines veterinary medicine with behavior modification techniques to create integrated, tailored treatment plans. They handle everything from aggression and separation anxiety to phobias and house soiling. Their expertise is especially valuable for pets with severe anxiety or reactivity, for whom traditional training alone has been ineffective. As a women-owned practice that is also LGBTQ+ friendly and a transgender safe space, they are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all clients and their pets.

Services Offered
Behavioral Modification: The cornerstone of their practice, focusing on techniques to change undesirable behaviors such as aggression, fear, anxiety, separation anxiety, noise phobias, and house soiling in cats and dogs. Their approach is based on a deep understanding of animal psychology and is a humane, force-free method.
Diagnostic Tests: To rule out or identify underlying medical causes for behavioral problems, the clinic performs comprehensive diagnostic tests. This includes in-house blood tests, blood work, and X-rays to ensure the pet's physical health is assessed as part of the overall behavioral evaluation.
Medical and Medication Management: As a veterinary practice, they have the ability to prescribe and manage medication to assist with behavioral issues. They focus on combining medication services with training and behavior modification to achieve the best possible outcomes for pets with severe anxiety or other conditions that are not responsive to training alone.
Preventative Care and Wellness: The team also offers preventative health services such as early detection for health issues, heartworm prevention, and routine maintenance like nail trims and hoof trimming for horses.
Nutritional and Potty Training Counseling: Providing guidance on nutritional counseling and specific training plans, such as potty training for puppies and kittens, is part of their comprehensive approach to pet wellness. They offer in-depth consultations to develop a tailored plan for each family and their pet.
Pet Insurance Plan Guidance: The clinic provides information and guidance on pet insurance, as many plans offer coverage for behavior visits, which can help make specialized care more affordable for pet owners.
Features / Highlights
Specialized Expertise: The clinic's lead veterinarian, Dr. Jill Sackman, is a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. This is a rare and highly valued credential in the veterinary world. This level of expertise means they can provide wisdom and treatment that goes far beyond what is typically learned in general veterinary school, particularly for complicated cases that other vets or trainers may not be able to resolve.
Compassionate and Life-Changing Support: Clients consistently praise the team’s kindness, graciousness, and endless support. A review highlights how the clinic helped a "severely anxiety ridden rescue" find a sense of calm and relief, stating that the dog “can now fully relax inside our home.” This speaks to the life-changing impact of their work, not only on the pet but on the entire family.
Responsive and Attentive Team: The staff is described as "insanely fast at responding and following up to any questions big or small." This level of communication provides essential support, especially when pet owners are navigating a new treatment plan or have concerns about their pet's progress.
Inclusive and Safe Environment: Identifying as a women-owned, LGBTQ+ friendly, and transgender safe space, the clinic has made a conscious effort to create a welcoming and respectful environment for all members of the community. This commitment to diversity and inclusion is a significant feature that sets them apart.
Integrated Approach: The clinic’s philosophy of combining veterinary medicine with behavior modification is a unique and effective model. They understand that a pet's behavior is often a reflection of both their emotional state and their physical health, and they treat both aspects simultaneously.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1So grateful to have this level of expertise in GR. If you are working through meds with your pup and need wisdom beyond what is learned in gen vet school... Dr. Sackman is incredible!Updating because I can't believe the negative review. Dr. Sackman is so kind and gracious... Especially given her workload, the type of work she does (finding a behaviorist of her pedigree is a needle in a haystack - trust me), and that she splits her client load across the state. Her team has always been insanely fast at responding and following up to any questions big or small. Also, without her help, our severely anxiety ridden rescue certainly would have landed back 'in the system'. Training was literally impossible until we worked through a series of med trials with Dr. Sackman. That wasn't easy and our dog is still a nervous little thing, but at least her behaviors are semi tolerable in public and she can now fully relax inside our home. Before medication, she was on high alert, constantly anxious.Anyway,I literally cannot imagine living with our little nutjob without the support of Dr. Sackman.
March 25 · Be DrakeWe don’t know where we’d be without the wonderful care we’ve received from Dr. Sackman and her team. She has provided endless support and patience and helped to transformed our very scared rescue pup into a confident babe. I don’t have enough good things to say so I’ll say this, if you’re feeling hopeless, like you’ve tried everything, like you’re a failure of a pet parent — give Dr. S a chance to change your life!
August 12 · Chelsea WarneDr. Sackman is such a compassionate teacher. She thoroughly reviews each patient case to determine their needs for their lifestyles. To watch her educate about animal behaviors is a true joy. Her passion shines through and it is clear why she is a behavior specialist. She is a phenomenal teacher for clients and veterinary staff alike.
September 28 · Grand River Veterinary HospitalUnless you have a lot of disposable income, you will not be able to afford this service. They have no compassion for Disabled Veterans living solely on disability. The cost of JUST a consultation is $465, with over $150 non-refundable deposit. That’s a huge ask for a lot of people, not just for someone on limited income. It is also ridiculous when there are no guarantees that they can even help your pet. How can you ask someone to forego paying their mortgage without even knowing if you’re able to provide effective service?
May 24 · Polly LongWe have a pretty difficult miniature Aussie doodle. They have been able to work with us to prescribe helpful medication‘s and provide helpful strategies and ideas to reduce our dogs significant anxiety and help his behavior.
