For pet owners in Minnesota, an unexpected health crisis for a beloved companion can be a source of immense stress. During these critical moments, having a reliable, expert-level resource is invaluable. The Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota (AERC), located in Oakdale, serves as a vital lifeline for pets and their families. This article provides a comprehensive overview of AERC, highlighting its dual role as both an emergency hospital and a referral center, and explaining why it is a trusted choice for pet owners across the region. By understanding the unique services and compassionate approach of AERC, you can feel more prepared should your pet ever need specialized or urgent care.
The Twin Cities metropolitan area, with its large and active pet-owning population, requires a sophisticated and well-equipped veterinary infrastructure. AERC rises to this challenge by offering a level of care that goes far beyond what a typical general practice clinic can provide, especially after hours. As an emergency hospital, they are open 24/7, staffed with experienced veterinarians and technicians ready to handle any sudden illness or injury. As a referral center, they work closely with primary care veterinarians to provide highly specialized and advanced care for complex cases that require the expertise of a board-certified specialist, similar to how a human doctor refers a patient to a consultant. This seamless integration of emergency and specialty services ensures pets receive continuous, expert care, from a sudden crisis to the management of a long-term condition. The clinic’s commitment to not only medical excellence but also to making a stressful situation more manageable for pet owners is consistently praised by clients.
This guide will explore the essential information about AERC, from its accessible location and comprehensive services to the features that make it a compassionate and professional choice. Customer reviews will also be used to provide a genuine perspective on the quality of care and support you can expect to receive from the dedicated team at AERC.
The Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota (AERC) is located at 1160 Helmo Ave N, Oakdale, MN 55128, USA. This location is designed to be easily accessible for pet owners throughout the Twin Cities metro area, which is crucial during an emergency. The facility prioritizes accessibility for all visitors, featuring a wheelchair-accessible entrance, a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. These features ensure a more comfortable and less stressful experience for all clients, especially those with mobility challenges. The availability of a free parking lot adds another layer of convenience. AERC operates on an appointments-recommended basis for specialty services, but for emergencies, it's best to call ahead to let them know you're on your way. AERC staff will triage your pet, much like a human emergency room, with the most critical patients being seen first. This ensures that life-threatening conditions are addressed with immediate urgency, but it may also mean a wait for less critical cases.
AERC offers a wide array of advanced and specialized services that cater to both emergency and referral cases. Their team is composed of emergency doctors and specialists in various fields of veterinary medicine. This dual focus allows them to provide a level of care that is not typically found in a standard veterinary clinic. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We went to the consult to get some info and came away with what we needed. No pressure to move forward with anything. I was able to ask all the questions I needed to without feeling rushed, which is really important to me. They worked with me to make a plan for my dog if we needed to move forward with anything, and they were very accommodating. I'm very pleased with our visit. My dog got a ton of love too, which I would guess means he gives them 5/5 stars too!
August 29 · Megan VargasWe are incredibly grateful for the outstanding care our puppy Maple received at your clinic. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that your team is not only highly experienced and knowledgeable, but also genuinely compassionate and dedicated to the well-being of animals and their families. The Veterinarian and Techs went above and beyond to provide thoughtful, thorough care, and we always felt informed and supported every step of the way. Every staff member — from reception to the techs — was warm, attentive, and clearly committed to making a difference. We truly appreciate the time, patience, and expertise you’ve offered us. It made a stressful situation so much more manageable, and we left feeling reassured and cared for. Thank you for all that you do — it means more than words can express.Cassie, Preston & Sweet Maple
June 12 · Cassie GerlachI’ve gone to AERC Oakdale for many of my pets - internal medicine for an abdominal ultrasound for my now-passed Roxie to diagnose her liver tumor, life-saving emergency surgery for an intestinal obstruction for my little pup Pippin, and multiple visits for respiratory issues for my rat Drusilla. I can’t speak highly enough about all of my interactions with the staff during each of these visits and I specifically travel out of my way past closer emergency or specialty centers to go to AERC. Most recently, Dr. Moschetto in the exotics department has been above and beyond amazing in helping with my rat’s management - if you need specialty care for your exotic pet she is truly outstanding! Managing my pets’ various advanced medical issues has been scary at times but I’ve always felt reassured that we’ve all been in good hands here. I recommend AERC to everyone who needs emergency or specialty care!
April 03 · Jamie DeanI brought my kitty Mochi in after our primary care referred us for possible foreign body ingestion. She spent two nights in the ICU with AERC and they took fantastic care of her, making sure she was comfortable and hydrated and eating, as well as managing her pain, while we waited for the object to pass. They were great about keeping me updated on her progress, and today she was able to come home happy and healthyUPDATE to edit review: shortly after I posted this, my other cat went in for a bladder blockage. I am still incredibly happy with the actual care that he received. However, while we knew he'd need surgery on Friday, they don't do surgeries like that on weekends. So, because he was catheterized, they kept him for two extra days, which added quite a bit to my bill. This is a 24/7 emergency vet, imo there's no excuse to not do surgeries/have a board certified surgeon available on the weekends - and if that's the case, the pet owner shouldn't be charged for the extra days that the animal has to stay. Very frustrating when the visit was already incredibly expensive. I am much more understanding of delays due to other animals needing priority surgery spots, but simply not keeping staff available shouldn't be my cost to deal with.I wasn't sure to end this at a 3 or a 4 star, but at the end of the day, my cats are home and healthy which is #1 importance. The staff was communicative and my cats were treated very well. I think a 4* is fair.
June 26 · Courtney FoxI received care recently for my Miss Tillie 14yo cat at this facility. I had to have consults and testing and procedures to ultimately needing surgery. My little girl was so chill at this place because of the team’s care and concern. They were so unbelievably kind, compassionate, understanding, and thorough! It all went to smoothly, there was never a moment of doubt that she may or may not be in good hand. Outstanding people at this facility from top to bottom but a bigSHOUT OUT TO FLOOR TWO!!Thank you so much!
