What is worth choosing
For farmers and agricultural producers in Virginia, Ironsides Animal Health is a veterinary service truly worth choosing, primarily because of its specialized focus on large animal and production veterinary care. Unlike a general veterinary practice, this clinic is uniquely equipped to handle the complex needs of a farm, from routine herd health management to emergency situations with livestock. The service model, which includes farm calls, is a major convenience and a significant benefit. This eliminates the logistical challenges and stress of transporting large or sick animals, allowing them to be treated in their own environment. The availability of telehealth services further enhances this convenience, providing a way for clients to get expert advice and support remotely when a full farm visit isn't necessary.
The expertise of the team is another compelling reason to choose this practice. As one review notes, a veterinarian was able to respond to a goat emergency within two hours and was "quick, knowledgeable, and caring," leading to a full recovery. This kind of hands-on, rapid response is invaluable for farmers who rely on the health of their animals for their livelihood. While the business has undergone a transition, with a new name and structure, the core of their service—which has been praised for its compassionate and effective care—remains a key strength. The focus on proactive, preventative medicine and providing advice on herd health goes beyond just treating sick animals; it helps ensure the long-term viability and profitability of a farm.
Additionally, the business's identity as a women-owned and LGBTQ+ friendly practice highlights their commitment to creating an inclusive and respectful environment for all clients. This can be an important factor for many in the community who value supporting diverse businesses. The combination of specialized expertise, a client-focused service model, and a compassionate approach makes Ironsides Animal Health a top choice for any agricultural operation in the Roanoke, Virginia region looking for a dedicated and reliable veterinary partner.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I recently had an unfortunate experience with Ironsides Vet, formerly Wellfarm. I was very happy with Dr. Varnell and the friendly and efficient service that we got for our sheep and donkeys. However, since they merged with Ironsides, it took two or three days to get a reply to an email or a text, and sometimes I got no reply at all. Also, after the merger, the prices went up dramatically.. When I questioned the prices and asked for a detailed invoice, they started to become unfriendly with me. Furthermore, when I reported to them that we had had three lambs to add to my file, I got no reply. When I commented that it seemed like no one there cared about me or my animals any longer, they cut me off, and refused to offer any further services or replies to my emails. Also, earlier, when I thought I had an emergency, I called the helpline and the person I spoke to seemed like they really didn't know much about sheep. I couldn't believe they totally cut me off after I simply asked about the charges on the invoice and made observations about the lack of prompt replies to my inquiries. Too bad, because I thought we had a good relationship.
June 06 · Richard PhillipsI could not be happier with my experience with Ironsides. Dr. Varnell came to my farm within 2 hours of my first call for an emergency with my goat, Phillip. She was quick, knowledgeable, and caring. Phillip made a full recovery! This is a fantastic vet service for our small, backyard hobby farm.
June 17 · Nancy DaveldekDr Varnell and Kristina are amazing women and animal caregivers. I am new to goats and wow has it been a very active learning experience with my herd of 4. These ladies educate and teach me each time we have contact. I am thankful to get our herd healthy and we survived an unexpected pregnancy. Yeap one doe was pregnant unexpectedly when we obtained the herd.Thankful for their caring and professional demeanor!!!!
July 23 · Tracy WallerThe Simms' will be forever clients of Wellfarm Vets!I called a few months ago looking for a vet that would be able to take care of our show pigs. As we have no one local that is willing to work with swine. Explained that we were quite the drive for them. Well over an hour. She never hesitated about taking us on. We were set up with an appointment to establish the vet/patient relationship. She thoroughly checked each pig along with our goats. We had a issue arrise last week with one of my daughters show pigs. messaged and an appointment was set up immediately. Both times they have been to the house all issues were resolved quickly. they are the most professional and knowledgeable Vets.another plus. they drive over an hour, treat, and prescribed medications cheaper than I have ever taken my dog or cat to the vet locally!
July 05 · Jessica SimmsWe have been using Wellfarm Vets this year to take care of our goat herd on our small homestead. Dr. Varnell is very knowledgeable, is really good at communicating and responding, and has great “bedside manor.” She is great at following up and has been very patient with us as we are newbies, and have only been farming for about 3 years. Dr. Varnell is the best large animal vet around, hands down!
