Mattatuck Animal Hospital offers a range of services designed to address the general health and wellness needs of pets. While specific details on every service are best confirmed directly with the hospital, common offerings at such a facility typically include:
Routine Wellness Exams: Essential for monitoring your pet's overall health, detecting early signs of illness, and maintaining their well-being. These typically involve a physical examination, discussion of your pet's diet and lifestyle, and addressing any owner concerns.
Vaccinations: Providing crucial protection against common and potentially serious diseases, tailored to your pet's age, species, and lifestyle. This includes core vaccines and, where appropriate, non-core vaccines.
Parasite Prevention and Control: Offering solutions for the prevention and treatment of internal and external parasites, such as fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal worms, which are important for both pet and human health.
Nail Clippings and Basic Grooming: Routine services like nail trimmings are often available to help maintain your pet's comfort and hygiene.
General Consultations: Addressing various pet health concerns, from minor ailments to behavioral issues, providing professional advice and guidance.
Basic Diagnostic Services: While the extent may vary, general practices often perform fundamental diagnostic tests such as blood work or urinalysis to help identify health problems.
Prescription Refills (with conditions): For pets on ongoing medication, refills are typically provided, though this often requires a recent examination or adherence to specific protocols, as is common in veterinary medicine.
Mattatuck Animal Hospital, as a local veterinary practice, possesses several characteristics that shape the experience for pet owners in Waterbury.
Long-Standing Presence: Having served the Waterbury area for a significant period, the hospital has established itself as a familiar option for many local pet owners. This longevity often implies a deep understanding of the local pet population and common health issues in the region.
Cost-Effectiveness for Routine Care: Some clients have noted that the hospital's services, particularly for routine procedures like nail clippings, are not overcharged, making it an economically viable option for basic needs for some pet owners.
Personalized, Older-Style Approach: The use of paper records, as mentioned by a client, suggests a more traditional, hands-on approach to record-keeping and client interaction, which some individuals may find more personal or comfortable than fully digitized systems.
Dedicated to General Practice: The hospital appears to focus on the essential and general veterinary needs of common household pets, providing a foundational level of care for the community.
Commitment to Kindness (as reported by some): One client specifically highlighted the staff's consistent kindness towards their pets, which is a valuable aspect for any pet owner seeking a compassionate environment for their animals.
Known for Limited Hours and Potential Wait Times: It's important for prospective clients to be aware that the hospital reportedly has limited operating hours and that early arrival (e.g., 90 minutes before opening) may be necessary to be seen due to demand and the clinic's operational flow.
It is important for prospective clients to note that while some clients have positive experiences, particularly regarding kindness and cost-effectiveness for routine services, recent reviews also indicate challenges with customer service, communication, and responsiveness, especially concerning prescription refills and post-visit follow-up. Experiences with individual veterinarians and specific procedures, such as vaccinations, also vary. These recent concerns highlight the importance of direct communication with the clinic to understand their current operational procedures and service delivery expectations before committing to care.

Mattatuck Animal Hospital Reviews
Honestly they are lovely- the place is older and only uses paper but they have always been kind to my two mini doxies. They also don’t overcharge. The hours are very limited and I would suggest you get there at least 90 min before opening if you want to be seen.
Jun 28, 2025 · Mariann BatistaThis place has gone downhill! I went in for a routine nail clipping and they said my dog, 100lb mastiff mix, needed rabies update. No problem she's had several of them at 5 yrs old. First issue for me was the doctor seemed nervous/ scared of my pup. She's a mush and most doctors love her. It's the FIRST time I've ever had a vet muzzle my dog, at least in front of me to my knowledge. The day after her shot she could barely walk and could not get up without assistance. She was wobbly, limping on the leg the shot was given and her rear end dropping out from under her. She was eating/drinking and going to the bathroom normal so when I called on their next business day they said to wait until Wednesday when the doctor was back in. But by Wednesday morning she couldn't hold herself up at all and I took her to the ER vet.The ER gave her meds, a weeks worth, to see if it helped, and said to have my regular vet call in for the rest of the script if she was doing better with it. She was, so a few days later I called to refill. It was a back and forth issue where mattatuck was seemingly too busy, or just didn't care to take the time to fill her script. There was an issue getting an email or fax from the ER vet so they said to me TWICE on the phone if I had my mom bring the ER release papers showing she was given the meds they'd give her the rest. Well my mom went there the first day, they closed. Second day at 9:30 am they said they couldn't give it to her until the doctor saw it. Okay no problem. I waited for a call, nothing. I called at 1pm and was told the doctor is still at lunch and would call when he's done. No call, so I called again, and it went to voicemail. That's 2 days my pup will miss meds, I was forced to call the ER vet back and ask if they can fill her script and it is a 40 minute drive one way vs mattatuck being local within 15 minutes. The lack of care, empathy, and urgency for this matter is appauling and I'll be finding a new vet. The place used to be so good, I don't know what happened. I'm also stuck with a $300+ bill on top of what I paid mattatuck for their "services".
Apr 24, 2025 · k cThis is a place where they care about your pet.My new pet, a malnourished stray, was boarded here because the Waterbury Pound had no room for her. She was given excellent treatment by the staff. I went to pick up something and Dr. T got down on the floor to pet Winnie and make a fuss over her. She had not been an ideal patient with the doctor when she first arrived. Dr. T's treatment showed his care for pets.
