River Road Veterinary Clinic Introduce
Hello, Vermont pet owners! When it comes to finding veterinary care, every pet is unique, and sometimes, those unique needs extend beyond traditional dog and cat care. For owners of exotic pets – from reptiles to birds and small mammals – finding a veterinarian with specialized knowledge and a genuinely caring approach is essential. In Norwich and the surrounding Vermont communities, **River Road Veterinary Clinic** has earned a reputation, particularly among exotic pet owners, for its focused expertise and commitment to educating pet parents.
While a veterinary clinic typically aims to serve all types of common household pets, River Road Veterinary Clinic has a distinct highlight in its care for exotic animals. Clients frequently commend their affordability and the time veterinarians take to educate owners, empowering them to better care for their unique companions. This introduction will guide you through the services, specific highlights, and overall approach of River Road Veterinary Clinic, helping you understand why they might be a suitable choice for your local pet care needs, especially if you have an exotic friend, here in Vermont.
River Road Veterinary Clinic is located at **445 Rte 5 N, Norwich, VT 05055, USA**. This address places the clinic along a key route, making it accessible for residents of Norwich and the wider Upper Valley region, which spans both Vermont and New Hampshire. For pet owners in Vermont, particularly those seeking specialized care for exotic animals, having a conveniently located clinic can be a significant factor in ensuring their pets receive timely attention.
The clinic's presence on Route 5 North facilitates relatively easy navigation and access for those traveling from nearby towns. While the facility is a fixed location, offering a consistent place for appointments and care, its position on a main road ensures a degree of convenience for clients commuting from various directions. For local Vermont users, knowing a specialized exotic pet vet is accessible without venturing too far can be a considerable benefit.
River Road Veterinary Clinic provides veterinary services for pets. While they are notably praised for their exotic pet care, a general practice typically offers a range of services for various companion animals. Based on general veterinary clinic offerings and the provided review, their services likely include:
- Exotic Pet Care: A significant focus, including comprehensive examinations, diagnostics, and treatment for reptiles (like bearded dragons), birds, small mammals, and other non-traditional pets. This specialty often involves unique knowledge of their specific biology, husbandry, and common ailments.
- Wellness Exams: Routine check-ups for various species, including physical examinations and discussions about preventative health strategies to maintain overall well-being.
- Diagnostic Services: Likely includes basic in-house lab tests (e.g., blood work, fecal exams) and potentially partnerships with external laboratories for more specialized diagnostics, crucial for identifying health issues in exotic animals.
- Medical Treatments: Addressing a range of illnesses and conditions for both exotic and potentially common companion animals.
- Educational Consultations: A strong emphasis on educating pet owners, explaining procedures, husbandry, and care techniques in understandable terms. This empowers owners to take an active role in their pet's health.
- Minor Procedures/Treatments: As evidenced by the review, guiding owners through simple procedures like removing shed from a bearded dragon's eye, suggesting a hands-on, educational approach to care.
It is important to note that while they offer services, a review also brought up concerns regarding their grooming services, specifically involving communication, pricing, and the quality of the groom itself. This suggests that while their exotic pet care is highly praised, the range and quality of all ancillary services may vary.
River Road Veterinary Clinic is recognized for several distinct features and highlights, particularly emphasized by clients who bring in exotic pets. These aspects contribute to its reputation within the Vermont pet-owning community:
- Specialized Exotic Pet Expertise: This is the clinic's most prominent highlight. They are highly recommended for their ability to care for "all of my reptiles" and are seen as the preferred choice for exotic pets, a niche service that is often difficult to find.
- Reasonable Pricing for Exotic Care: Unlike "most exotic vets," River Road Veterinary Clinic is noted for being "very reasonably priced" for their specialized services. This affordability makes expert exotic pet care more accessible to a wider range of owners.
- Strong Emphasis on Client Education: Veterinarians take the time to "educate you" about your animal's health and care. This includes hands-on teaching, such as demonstrating how to remove eye shed from a bearded dragon and guiding owners through the process. This empowers owners to feel more confident in managing their pet's health at home.
- Personalized Approach: The veterinarians not only examine the animal but also engage with owners, including children, making the experience informative and collaborative.
However, it is crucial to acknowledge a significant concern raised by another review regarding their "grooming" services. This review describes:
- Miscommunication and Pricing Issues: A lack of clarity on what a "grooming" entails (e.g., bath as a separate charge, minute-by-minute billing for cuts), leading to unexpected high costs.
- Unsatisfactory Grooming Outcome: The pet was not shaved as requested, had uneven cuts, random shaved spots, and remaining matting.
- Poor Customer Service Post-Grooming: Attempts to resolve the issue were met with "rude, aggressive dismissal," refusal to listen, and the clinic allegedly hanging up mid-conversation and refusing to pick up the phone.
These contrasting reviews suggest a strong positive experience for specialized exotic pet care and client education, but a significant negative experience concerning specific non-veterinary services like grooming and corresponding customer service for those issues.

It is generally recommended to call the clinic directly to schedule appointments, especially for specialized exotic pet care, or to discuss any specific needs for your animal. If considering services like grooming, it would be prudent to clarify all aspects of the service, including what is included and how costs are calculated, before the appointment.
For Vermont pet owners, particularly those in Norwich and the surrounding communities, River Road Veterinary Clinic offers a mixed suitability, with clear strengths in specific areas and noted challenges in others. Its primary suitability for locals lies in its specialized care for exotic pets.
If you are a local Vermont resident with a **reptile, bird, or other exotic companion**, River Road Veterinary Clinic appears to be an excellent choice. Clients with exotic pets consistently praise their veterinarians for being highly knowledgeable, providing comprehensive care, and offering services at "very reasonably priced" rates, which is a significant advantage in this specialized field. The emphasis on **client education** is also a major benefit; veterinarians take the time to explain diagnoses and treatment plans clearly, even involving children in the learning process. This empowering approach helps owners feel confident and capable in managing their exotic pet's unique needs, making it a highly suitable and trusted resource for this specific demographic in our state.
However, it is crucial for local users to be aware of the contrasting feedback regarding their non-veterinary services, specifically grooming. The detailed negative experience highlights significant concerns about **communication, billing transparency, the quality of service, and post-service customer support**. This indicates that while the veterinary medical care, particularly for exotic animals, receives high marks, other service offerings might not meet the same standard.
In conclusion, for Vermont residents seeking a veterinarian with expertise in exotic pets and a commitment to educating owners, River Road Veterinary Clinic is a highly suitable and recommended option in Norwich. However, for those considering other services like grooming, it would be prudent to have very clear, upfront discussions about expectations, pricing, and potential outcomes to ensure a positive experience.

River Road Veterinary Clinic Reviews
Great vets! I bring all of my reptiles to them and unlike most exotic vets they are very reasonably priced. I always bring my kids with me if it’s their animal being seen because the veterinarian here not only examines your animal but also takes the time to educate you. A couple months ago I brought my bearded dragon in with an eye infection and shed stuck in her eye, the vet taught us how to remove the eye shed and had us do it ourselves. I wouldn’t take my exotic pets anywhere else.
Sep 03, 2024 · Tiffany ElliottThis was the worst “grooming” I have ever paid for. I recently moved to the area and called around for a local groomer for my terrier. The secretary at River Road assured me they had a professional groomer. I brought her in and told them I wanted her shaved. They asked if I needed her bathed too which I thought was strange - I’m my experience a grooming contains both a bath and cut. I told the groomer to shave her because of her matting. She asked if I wanted to keep her fluffy and I said if possible, sure but that I doubted she would be able to brush her out since she hates to be brushed. She said it would be about 1.5hrs. 3hrs later they said she was done. I picked her up in a rush because I had to get to a meeting. As I was paying I found out that the bath cost $50 and the cut was charged by the minute totaling $176. I hadn’t thought to ask if they would charge by the minute because I have never once encountered that before. When I got home I looked at her closely and was horrified. Instead of shaving her like I asked, they attempted to brush her, cut her unevenly, and shaved her to the skin in random spots. She looks horrific and still has a lot of matting all over. We called back immediately asking for a refund and were told that the doctor who could handle that was out. This morning we called back and were met with rude, aggressive dismissal and 3 doctors who refused to listen to the problem or offer any solutions. They hung up mid conversation and won’t pick up the phone. As someone new to the area this was a terrible welcome. I’m not sure what to do now.
Sep 20, 2022 · Scotia DettweilerWhen my teacup poodle fell down some stone steps and hit her head, it became clear something bad happened. I needed to go to an Emergency Vet immediately. I was a 35 minute drive away and was SO grateful that Dr. Chris Dutton came in after hours. He was very professional and helpful and clearly cared about animals. It's that kind of service to the community that makes River Road Veterinary Clinic an excellent place to bring your pets.
Jul 17, 2024 · TamarGot Smokey microchipped it got stuck when they inserted it and was told to keep an eye in case it backs out. I went there for worm treatment and shots etc. Ended up 260$ and nothing done except given a prescription for the worm medicine to go buy else where. There was no dosing written just 3 pills but I didn't know when or how often to administer. Took them a few days to get back to me about it.. like I hope future visits go along better
Apr 01, 2025 · Glenna A. Ferland (Moyer)I cannot sing the praises of this place any higher. In an effort to not drone on I will bullet the things that stand out about this incredibly special veterinary practice:+ The vets are knowledgeable, compassionate, thorough and patient. They take their time with each animal and make you feel like they genuinely care about the health and well being of your pet+ They do not charge you for extra BS. My dog had a surgery for an unknown mass, it turned out to be a benign tumor. They cut the anticipated cost in HALF because the surgery ended up being simpler then they originally anticipated. I was full expecting and willing to pay the original amount, but felt so appreciative that they charged ONLY for the necessities. This alone is hard to find if not almost impossible in today's health care climate both for humans and animals+ They are easy to book appoi tents, after care, nothing is hard to manage with themI feel so lucky to have this practice close by and will be bringing any pet I have here without a doubt!
