What makes VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists worth choosing? The overwhelming consensus from positive reviews is the peace of mind that comes from knowing your pet is in the hands of a truly dedicated and talented team. For a pet owner whose dog required major surgery, the communication, thoroughness, and compassion of the staff, especially Dr. Carvajal and Amber, were invaluable. Another client, who had to make a long trip in the middle of the night for an emergency, found the staff's kindness and professionalism to be a source of calm during a very frightening time. This level of empathetic care is arguably as important as the medical expertise itself.
While one review expresses frustration at being unable to be seen, this is a common challenge for specialized and emergency centers that must prioritize based on a pet's condition and the expertise of available staff. The positive experiences, however, highlight a hospital that excels in the moments of greatest need. They are not just treating an ailment; they are treating a beloved family member. For Oregon residents whose pet has a complex medical issue or who need a reliable emergency hospital, VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists is a top-tier option. The combination of its skilled specialists, advanced technology, and compassionate staff makes it a premier choice for advanced veterinary care in the region.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Dr. Carvajal and team, with a special shout out to the amazing rockstar Amber, took such good care of my pup Gus. He had to have a major surgery, fusing bones together because he’d torn all the ligaments in his leg. Over the three plus months of recovery, which included weekly visits to the clinic for bandage changes, they were communicative, thorough, and incredibly compassionate. I truly appreciate you both and couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated and talented team. Thank you so much for everything!
July 19 · Cory LiningerBest place ever.My poor hyper cocker injured his back and I had to make a 20 mile trip in the middle of the night to get help. The staff and vet at VCA were wonderful. They explained everything in dog owner terms not vet/doctor talk. The receptionist Alyssa was very professional and kinds as she kept me informed as the vet examined my baby. Special thanks to her as I was a wreck as I waited. She was so wonderful to help me stay calm. The VCA Team is the best.
July 24 · kendra romineHad a fantastic experience with Dr. Angela Banz and Phyllis. My dog needed emergency surgery for removal of a foreign object and the procedure was completed successfully with a speedy recovery. Highly recommend this team!
April 22 · Erin DoolyBrought my kitten in for an emergency rectal prolapse. While the veterinary care itself was adequate, the front desk receptionist, Katie, was unprofessional and concerning.Staff refused to provide basic first aid (saline) to keep tissue moist during the 90 minute wait. Receptionist Katie visibly gagged at my pet and said “Sorry, I don’t do gross” when bringing us to the exam room. She added unnecessary stress during an already traumatic emergency. I spoke with a front end supervisor about it, the tech and the vet.On the positive side, the vet technician and doctor were professional and provided appropriate medical care. But seeing as Katie is still here the next day to check me back in, it’s clear her unprofessional behavior is tolerated. She’s putting on a show for me, singing and humming to herself, joking around with staff and making herself look busy and important. Truth is, she’s fairly new and gleefully unaware of how unprofessional she is.The medical team did their job well, but front desk staff need better training on handling emergency situations professionally. If you work in any capacity veterinary medicine, you should be prepared to handle all conditions without making clients feel worse during difficult times.I was told that Katie’s behavior was unacceptable and they would be addressing it. Seeing as she’s cheerily doing my intake the next day, mocking me with her singsong voice, it sends the message that management tolerates unprofessional behavior toward clients. It does raise concerns for me about VCA’s standards and workplace culture.I would recommend finding alternative emergency care if possible, due to staff attitude and tolerance for unprofessional behavior.
July 28 · Julie Scheering FrankI cannot say enough good things about this place! My dog had lost full use of his hind legs due to IVDD & there were no available neurologists in all of Oregon. Within 24 hours, VCA had gotten me in with Dr. Korff for not only an evaluation & diagnostics, but for surgery. 2 days post op, my little guy is standing!! Every person here from the surgeon, to the techs, to the receptionist is outstanding. I called so many times with follow up questions and they never made me feel stupid or annoying. The kindness we experienced here is something my dog & my family will always remember. Thank you!!
