VCA Old Town Animal Hospital offers several key features and highlights that set it apart. A major strength highlighted in a customer review is the staff's professionalism and compassion. The front desk staff, techs, and vets are consistently described as kind, professional, and attentive. One client specifically named Becca and Avery at the front desk and praised them for being welcoming and efficient. The same client also highlighted Dr. Madera and Dr. Lacoste for going "above and beyond" in providing excellent care. This positive feedback on the team-wide effort, from the first point of contact to the vet, is a significant highlight. The hospital also stands out for its calm and professional atmosphere, which helps reduce anxiety for both pets and their owners. As a reviewer noted, their dog is always relaxed when they come in, which is a testament to the staff’s gentle and respectful approach to animals. Another key highlight is the hospital’s ability to provide a comprehensive range of services under one roof. They offer advanced care like oncology and acupuncture, as well as routine services like boarding and grooming. This wide scope of practice makes them a convenient "one-stop shop" for many pet owners. The hospital also demonstrated exceptional compassion when a client's dog was attacked, providing them with a private waiting space away from crowds. This type of thoughtful, personalized care is a powerful feature of the hospital's service. The hospital's accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) is also a highlight, as it signifies a commitment to meeting rigorous standards of veterinary care.

When considering a veterinary care provider, pet owners in Virginia want a practice that offers not just medical expertise but also a trustworthy and compassionate experience. VCA Old Town Animal Hospital is a compelling choice for several reasons. One of the most important factors is their staff's dedication and professionalism, which is consistently praised in customer reviews. The team's ability to provide a calm and gentle environment is a significant benefit, especially for pets that are anxious about vet visits. The reviewer who brings their dogs to VCA noted that their pets are always relaxed, which speaks volumes about the staff's approach. Another key reason is the hospital's wide range of services. From general check-ups to advanced treatments like oncology and acupuncture, they can address nearly any health concern that may arise, reducing the need to visit multiple specialists. The convenience of on-site boarding and grooming services is an added bonus. However, it is also important to consider a critical piece of feedback from another customer. This review raised concerns about billing practices, a lack of transparency regarding costs, and what the customer perceived as a condescending tone from management. The reviewer felt that the hospital was more focused on revenue than on providing fair and transparent care, citing a significant markup on vaccine prices and issues with insurance claims. While a positive review highlights the staff's kindness and professionalism, this negative review underscores the importance of clear communication and financial transparency. Therefore, a pet owner might choose VCA for its extensive services and compassionate staff, but they should be proactive in discussing costs and payment options upfront to ensure a smooth and transparent experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I’ve been bringing my dogs to VCA Old Town for around 5 years, and I can’t say enough good things about the team here. From the front desk to the techs to the vets, everyone is incredibly kind and professional.Edgar and Cheyenne (most recent interaction), along with Dr. Lacoste’s tech (I think her name is nicole), are phenomenal—gentle, calm, and attentive every single visit. We’ve seen both Dr. Madera and Dr. Lacoste, and they’ve both gone above and beyond in providing excellent care.Everyone at the front desk staff is equally amazing. They keep things running smoothly and make you feel at ease from the moment you walk in. Becca and Avery in particular are always welcoming, warm and efficient, answering any questions I have no matter how silly. One of my dogs has had a particularly tough year with infections and some more serious issues, and the team has supported us every step of the way. When she was attacked by another dog last year, VCA Old Town went out of their way to give us a private space to wait, away from the crowds/dogs, and that meant a lot to us.My other dog is always relaxed when we come in—which says a lot—and I never feel anxious either. What I love most is how everyone treats the dogs with respect. They’re never overly excitable or loud; they maintain a calm, professional presence that really helps dogs feel safe.I’m so grateful for this team that truly goes above and beyond. I trust them completely with my dogs’ care.
June 11 · Colissa HugginsI would not recommend this place to anyone. I visited in May 2025 and called ahead to confirm they accepted my pet insurance (Trupanion). They told me they did. I went in, saw the vet, and got two recommended vaccines. They charged $87 per vaccine, which is more than double what I've paid at Petsmart ($40). My total bill came to nearly $300 for the vet visit and two vaccines. Even with insurance, I still paid $202 out of pocket which was way more than I expected. To make matters worse, I'm now stuck going back and forth with my insurance over the bill, and I still owe the clinic money. When they called me about the balance, they casually mentioned the receptionist had been fired, but there was no real apology, just a condescending tone like I should pay and move on. The manager gave a weak acknowledgment that they messed up the billing and told me, "next time will be better." Honestly, there won't be a next time. This place feels like it's more about squeezing money out of customers than actually providing fair, transparent care. A 100% markup on vaccines is outrageous, especially in this economy.I'm only giving 2 stars because the technicians (aside from the receptionist) were kind.Go to Petsmart in Alexandria instead--they're more affordable and upfront about costs. Ive attached what their prices were as of JUN2025
July 02 · Divante BrownAmazing staff! I was so impressed with how kind, warm and welcoming the whole staff was towards myself and my kitties. The Veterinarian was very genuine and relatable. Her tech was so sweet- and obviously loves animals. The exams were efficient and thorough. My fur babies got vaccinated and didn't seem to notice. Marley and Loki will be back. Thanks again for the great experience!
April 08 · Vanessa MajorsHave been bringing my pup here for the past 5 years. I have seen multiple vets and have only had good experiences. The techs are all very kind and caring. In addition the desk staff are friendly and helpful. Thankfully we have not needed much more than routine vet care but I am comforted knowing we are in good hands if something were to come up.
March 30 · Kristen BarbieriI had a very poor experience with my pet's surgery here. I received poor communication, he was scraped when they shaved a spot on his arm for an injection, the parking lot was completely full, yet only one other person was in the waiting room (granted there may have been others in other rooms), and I never had a chance to speak to the doctor before surgery. The price was substantially higher than the exact same procedure at another facility (although location and inflation may account for a portion of that, but it was over double).I filled out a survey detailing my issues, and selected that I wished to speak with someone, but no one ever followed up.
