Veterinary Cardiology Specialists Introduce
For pet owners in Minnesota, the news that a beloved companion has a heart condition can be unsettling. Navigating the world of veterinary cardiology requires a specialist who not only has a deep understanding of complex cardiac issues but also a compassionate and clear approach to communication. While many primary veterinary clinics provide excellent general care, a referral to a board-certified veterinary cardiologist is often the next step for pets with congenital or acquired heart disease. In this specialized field, Veterinary Cardiology Specialists stands out for its focused expertise and advanced care options. Located in Inver Grove Heights, this clinic is a key resource for Minnesota pet owners seeking a higher level of care for their animal's cardiac health.
The clinic's mission is to offer uncompromised cardiac care for dogs and cats. Unlike a general practice, every aspect of their service is tailored to the cardiovascular system, from initial diagnostic testing to long-term medical management. This specialization allows them to perform more detailed and precise evaluations, ensuring that pets with conditions like chronic degenerative valve disease or pulmonary hypertension receive the most accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan. A patient's care is often a collaborative effort, with the specialist working hand-in-hand with the primary veterinarian to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach to the pet's well-being. This teamwork is crucial for managing complex diseases and ensuring that all aspects of a pet's health are considered.
The field of veterinary cardiology is constantly evolving, and a specialist's expertise is vital for staying ahead of the curve. At Veterinary Cardiology Specialists, the focus is on providing the most current and effective medical and surgical options available. This can include anything from prescribing the latest medications to performing minimally invasive procedures. For pet owners who feel their pet's condition has stalled or whose primary vet has reached the limits of their expertise, a visit to a specialist like this can provide renewed hope and a clear path forward. Their work is a testament to the idea that with the right knowledge and tools, it's possible to give pets with heart conditions a better quality of life.
Situated at 7781 Amana Trail, Inver Grove Heights, MN 55077, USA, Veterinary Cardiology Specialists is conveniently located for pet owners in Inver Grove Heights and the broader Twin Cities metro area. Its location provides a central point of access for pet parents who are often traveling from a distance for specialized care. The facility itself is designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring a comfortable and stress-free visit for all. The clinic features a wheelchair accessible entrance, a wheelchair accessible parking lot, and a wheelchair accessible restroom. These accommodations are a reflection of the clinic's commitment to providing a welcoming environment for every client, regardless of their individual needs.
To ensure the highest level of service and care, the clinic operates on an appointments-recommended basis. This planning is crucial for a specialist practice, as each appointment often requires a significant amount of time for detailed examination, diagnostic testing, and thorough consultation. By scheduling in advance, the team can dedicate the necessary time to each case, review a pet's history from their primary veterinarian, and prepare for any specific diagnostic procedures that may be needed. While the clinic primarily operates by referral from a pet's general veterinarian, they also offer consultation services to help pet owners understand their options and determine the best course of action.
The clinic's amenities are focused on the comfort of both the pet and the owner, offering a clean and professional restroom. This attention to detail, from accessibility to appointment scheduling, is part of their overall effort to create a smooth and supportive experience during what can be a stressful time for a pet owner.
Veterinary Cardiology Specialists offers a wide array of advanced diagnostic, medical, and surgical services focused entirely on the heart and cardiovascular system. Their expertise covers a broad spectrum of conditions and treatments.
- Advanced Diagnostic Testing: This includes detailed cardiac evaluations, blood work, blood panels, and X-rays. They also perform specialized diagnostic tests like Holter monitoring, which provides a continuous record of a pet's heart rhythm.
- Internal Medicine: The clinic focuses on the diagnosis and medical management of heart disease and other related conditions. This involves creating a comprehensive treatment plan that may include medication and other therapies.
- Surgical and Minimally Invasive Procedures: For certain conditions, they offer surgical procedures and minimally invasive procedures, such as catheter-based interventions, to correct congenital heart defects.
- Consultation and Referral Services: The clinic works as a specialist partner to primary veterinarians, providing consultation services and accepting referrals for complex cases. This collaborative approach ensures that the pet's health care is a unified effort.
- Other Ancillary Services: Beyond core cardiology, they offer additional diagnostic and ancillary services like OFA certification, which is important for breeders, as well as home diagnostic testing and health certifications.
This extensive list of services highlights their commitment to providing a complete solution for any pet's cardiac needs, from initial diagnosis to long-term management.
When a pet is facing a serious health challenge, choosing the right specialist is critical. Veterinary Cardiology Specialists offers several key features that make them a valuable resource for pet owners in Minnesota.
- Board-Certified Expertise: The clinic is led by Dr. Janet Olson, a board-certified veterinary cardiologist. This level of certification signifies a rigorous, advanced level of training and expertise that goes far beyond a general veterinary degree. Her specialized knowledge is invaluable for complex cases.
- Focused Cardiac Care: Unlike a general practice that juggles multiple specialties, this clinic's exclusive focus on cardiology ensures that every team member, from the doctor to the support staff, is knowledgeable about the nuances of heart conditions.
- Collaborative Approach: The practice is structured to work closely with a pet's primary veterinarian. This team-based approach ensures a smooth transition of care and a unified strategy for the pet's health, rather than fragmented treatment.
- Advanced Technology: The clinic's services rely on state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities, including advanced imaging and testing, to get the most accurate picture of a pet's health.
While the clinic offers a high level of specialized care, some customer feedback has noted issues with communication. A review from a client in 2020 mentioned a frustration with unreturned calls and emails, as well as a request for an additional consultation fee to discuss a prescribed medication. This suggests that while the medical expertise may be sound, pet owners should be prepared to be proactive in their communication and understand the clinic's policies regarding follow-up consultations.

Choosing a veterinary cardiologist is a decision driven by a pet's critical health needs, and Veterinary Cardiology Specialists provides a highly specialized option in Minnesota. The most compelling reason to choose this clinic is the presence of a board-certified veterinary cardiologist. For a pet with a serious heart condition, this level of expertise can be the difference between a life of discomfort and one of improved quality. The ability to receive a thorough cardiac evaluation, advanced diagnostic testing, and a comprehensive medical management plan from a specialist is a service that cannot be understated.
However, it is also important for pet owners to be aware of the potential communication challenges as noted in a past review. For a practice that often deals with emotionally charged situations, clear and responsive communication is vital. While the clinic’s medical credentials and services are robust, pet owners should be prepared to manage their expectations regarding follow-up and be direct in their communication. Despite these potential frustrations, the core value of Veterinary Cardiology Specialists lies in their ability to provide a level of care that is simply not available at a general veterinary practice. For a pet with a diagnosed or suspected heart condition, the access to advanced care and specialized knowledge is what makes this clinic a worthwhile and often necessary choice.

Veterinary Cardiology Specialists Reviews
My 10 year old Havanese/Tibetan Terrier mix was diagnosed with Chronic Degenerative Valve Disease and Pulmonary Hypertension. I took him to Dr. Olson in January of 2020. At the time, she appeared very competent and caring. She performed an EEG on my pup and created a very thorough summary of his condition and prescribed medications. Dr. Olson encouraged me to call her or email if I had questions or concerns. My pup was also being treated by a naturopath and that practitioner wanted some information from Dr. Olson in order to complement Gem's medications with natural supplements. I tried several times to reach Dr. Olson and SHE WOULD NOT RETURN ANY OF MY CALLS OR EMAILS. I only heard from her when I called the woman who made my initial appointment and explained the situation. The appointment setter told me that Dr. Olson's lack of response was unacceptable and she would contact the Dr. After that call, the doctor did respond to me, but only then.Three months down the road, my regular vet wanted to talk with the doctor to verify the amount of furosemide my pup was taking as he was on the highest dose that my vet had ever seen and her concern was that Gem was becoming dehydrated. AGAIN, DR. OLSON DID NOT BOTHER TO ANSWER ANY OF MY OR MY VET'S REQUESTS FOR ANSWERS. So, once again, I called the original appointment setter for Dr. Olson and explained that for the second time, she was not responding to us. Finally, Olson contacted my vet via her website and demanded a $185 consultation fee to discuss my dog's medication levels THAT SHE HAD PRESCRIBED!!! OUTRAGEOUS!! This doctor is a horrible communicator and I highly recommend that you choose a different doctor or you will be as frustrated as I am with such disrespectful treatment.
