The cause is nice, giving birds a second chance at a new home, but I couldn't stand to be there. I understand that birds are messy and will smell, I own many myself, but this was blatant hoarding. There were cages shoved in every corner of the house, the smell was horrid, and many of the birds almost seemed sick. When I went I noticed that all of the birds for adoption were plucked, disabled, had deformities, or were aggressive and not tamed. But of course, all of her personal birds were beautiful and in perfect shape. I also had a nephew who came in with his family for a sun conure a long time ago, and even after many visits where the bird even started to step up onto him (was scared of people before) she refused to give it because "kids get bored easily." The same kid has a macaw in perfect shape who he takes amazing care of. I understand concerns, but right after they stopped coming she gave it away to someone else. The owner is a bit judgmental, which I understand to a certain point because birds are one of those animals that are thrown in and out of homes, but I was displeased with my experience and didn't come back.I believe in adopt don't shop, but I personally wouldn't come back here to find a bird. Mickaboo has many birds from different rescues (Including avian rescue) and has a thorough yet understanding adoption process. - Naazo safi

Avian Rescue Introduce

For bird enthusiasts and compassionate individuals in Concord, California, and the broader Bay Area, Avian Rescue stands as a unique and dedicated organization focused on the welfare and rehoming of avian companions. Unlike a traditional pet store that sells animals, Avian Rescue is a non-profit bird rescue and sanctuary established in 2001, committed to providing a second chance for birds that have been abused, neglected, or simply lost their homes. Their mission revolves around rescuing birds, rehabilitating them, and finding suitable, loving permanent homes, or providing lifelong sanctuary for those unable to be adopted.

The decision to bring a bird into your home is a significant one, requiring commitment, understanding, and patience. Avian Rescue, also known as Avian Rescue Corporation (ARC), strives to ensure that every bird they place goes to a knowledgeable and caring environment. They host a diverse population of parrots, including Macaws, Cockatoos, Amazons, African Greys, and Cockatiels, each with their own unique history and needs. This overview will delve into the specifics of Avian Rescue, covering its location, the essential services it provides, its unique features as a rescue organization, and why it is a valuable resource for locals in California seeking to adopt a bird or support avian welfare. While some customer experiences may vary, as with any animal rescue, their core mission remains centered on the birds' well-being.

Avian Rescue is located at 1212 St Elizabeth Ct, Concord, CA 94518, USA. This address places the rescue facility within a residential area of Concord, making it accessible to individuals living in Concord and surrounding cities within Contra Costa County and the wider East Bay. While it's not a retail storefront on a bustling street, its presence in a residential setting might offer a more personal and quieter environment for birds in recovery and for potential adopters to interact with them without the typical commercial distractions.

Accessibility for visitors typically involves scheduling appointments, as noted in their information: "we prefer a visit any time between the hours of 11:30 AM and 2 PM any day (we have no weekends nor holidays), just call a day or so in advance for an appointment." This structured visitation approach allows them to manage visits effectively and provide dedicated attention to each potential adopter. For those located in California, especially in the East Bay, the Concord location makes it a feasible destination for multiple visits often required for the adoption process, as highlighted by a customer who stated, "Be prepared to spend time here if you come check out a bird. Charlie and Ron want to make sure you actually develop a bond with the bird before taking it home." This location, while not a high-traffic commercial area, emphasizes the personalized nature of their operations.

Avian Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to bird welfare, and as such, its services are focused entirely on rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming. Their core offerings include:

  • Bird Rescue Services: They rescue birds that have been "physically and mentally abused, neglected or mistreated while confined in hazardous conditions," picking them up from animal shelters and individuals who can no longer provide a good home. They also provide rescue services to state/county agencies, including experienced bird handlers for law enforcement proceedings.
  • Sanctuary & Lifetime Care: For birds that are not suitable for adoption due to chronic health issues, disabilities, or behavioral challenges, Avian Rescue provides a life-time sanctuary, ensuring these birds live out their lives in a safe and caring environment.
  • Bird Rehabilitation: They provide care and rehabilitation for rescued birds, including necessary medical attention, aiming to prepare them for adoption where possible. They also work with behavioral problems to rehabilitate birds.
  • Bird Adoption Program: Avian Rescue facilitates the adoption of suitable birds into loving and caring homes. Their adoption process is thorough, typically involving:
    • An initial interview to discuss the adopter's knowledge and experience with birds.
    • Meeting with the birds to allow for bonding. Multiple visits may be required to establish a bond with the chosen bird.
    • Completion of an adoption form.
    • Payment of an adoption fee, which varies by bird type (approximately half the market sale price). For example, a Macaw adoption fee might be around $700-$750.
    • A home visit for a bird-safe checkup and cage inspection before the bird is placed.
  • Education & Training: They provide educational programs to both the community and individuals on the commitment required for bird ownership, including proper care, feeding, and understanding the habits and lifespan of different bird types.
  • Lost and Found Bird Listings: Avian Rescue maintains a Lost and Found list, serving nationwide, though their local presence focuses on the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Support for Wild Birds: They also provide care and rehabilitation for wild birds until they can be released back into their natural environment.

Avian Rescue distinguishes itself through several unique features and highlights, as reflected in both their mission and customer feedback, though some reviews indicate areas for improvement in visitor experience:

  • Dedicated Avian Expertise: Unlike general pet stores, Avian Rescue specializes exclusively in birds, particularly parrots. This focus means a deeper understanding of avian needs, behaviors, and health issues.
  • Commitment to Bird Welfare: As a non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, 100% of donations, adoption fees, or grants go directly to the "food, medical expenses, and the care and rehabilitation of our birds." They are a "no-kill facility."
  • Thorough Adoption Process: The emphasis on multiple visits and bonding ("Charlie and Ron want to make sure you actually develop a bond with the bird before taking it home") ensures that birds are placed in truly committed and suitable homes. This can be seen as a strength, reflecting their deep care for the birds' well-being, even if it leads to longer adoption times or specific criteria.
  • Sanctuary for Unadoptable Birds: Their provision of lifelong sanctuary for birds with severe issues demonstrates a profound commitment to every bird under their care, regardless of its adoptability.
  • Wide Variety of Parrot Species: They house a significant number and variety of tropical parrots, including "Macaws, Cockatoos, Amazons, Congo African Greys, Cockatiels and some others," offering potential adopters a broad choice.
  • Experienced Caregivers: The involvement of individuals like "Charlie and Ron" and the owner's apparent deep "love for his aquariums" (though this specific review contextually refers to a different business, the sentiment of deep care for animals can be inferred for Avian Rescue's owner/staff as well, given the nature of a rescue) suggests experienced handlers who are dedicated to the birds.
  • Addressing Special Needs: Many of their adoptable birds are those with unique challenges ("plucked, disabled, had deformities, or were aggressive and not tamed"), indicating their willingness to take on complex cases that other facilities might not. This can be viewed as a testament to their dedication to the most vulnerable birds.

Its core mission of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming birds, coupled with its lifelong sanctuary for those unable to be adopted, speaks volumes about its dedication.

The thorough adoption process, which emphasizes bonding and home suitability, ensures that birds find truly committed homes, even if it requires patience from potential adopters.
