Concord, a major city in the East Bay, benefits from well-developed infrastructure and a network of main roads, contributing to the ease of reaching the store.
Concord Boulevard is a key arterial road within the city, suggesting that the shop is located in an area that is generally easy to navigate for both local residents and those visiting from surrounding communities like Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, or Martinez. The accessibility of the location is particularly important for a specialty store where customers often travel to find specific reptile species, unique caging, or specialized live feeders. ---**Hoffmann's Reptile Shop** offers a wide array of products and services specifically tailored for reptiles and amphibians, drawing on over 30 years of expertise in the field. Their offerings include:
Live Reptiles and Amphibians Sales: The primary focus of the shop is the sale of a variety of reptiles and amphibians. While they initially sold a broader range of animals, they narrowed their focus to "just reptiles and amphibians." Popular sellers include "bearded dragons and ball pythons," and customers can also find "exotic frogs, geckos, turtles," and even "pet rabbits" at times. They specialize in "family-friendly reptiles."
Feeder Insects and Rodents: A crucial offering for reptile owners, the shop provides various feeder insects (e.g., crickets, super worms) and feeder rodents. They sell over "10,000 crickets each week," indicating a consistent supply, though one customer noted they do not stock mealworms. Customers seeking super worms should be aware of a review mentioning a batch with "a bunch of super worms died, and molded."
Custom Vivariums and Caging: A unique service is their design and sale of "Reprite Cages," which are "wooden enclosure with glass front… designed to hold in the heat and humidity for the reptiles." They offer a "set up" service for these cages, including "all the equipment the animal needs. Just add the pet, take the enclosure home and plug it in." This custom setup is a significant advantage for new and experienced keepers.
Essential Reptile Supplies: Customers can find "everything you need to keep your herps healthy," including "caging, lights, and substrate." While one customer noted not seeing much in the storefront for general supplies, it's mentioned that some items may be "behind the counter." This includes specialized lighting, heating elements, and various bedding materials.
Expert Advice and Consultation: The staff at Hoffmann's are "more than happy to help" customers understand what their new reptile will need. They emphasize providing the "best care and caging, not the cheapest you can get away with," highlighting a commitment to proper husbandry. Their deep knowledge of the hobby in California is a significant asset.
Cage Cleaning and Boarding Services: Beyond initial purchases, they offer ongoing support with "cage cleaning for our cages" and "boarding" services, indicating care for animals while owners are away.
Health Checks: They also provide "health checks," showing a commitment to the long-term well-being of the animals they sell and those brought in by customers. Their services "go beyond your original purchase, for the life of the animal."
**Hoffmann's Reptile Shop** possesses several key features that make it a distinctive and valuable resource for the reptile and amphibian community in California:
Specialized Niche Focus and Longevity: With over "30 years" in business and a dedicated focus solely on "reptiles and amphibians," Hoffmann's offers unparalleled specialization. This deep-rooted experience means they possess extensive knowledge and a tailored inventory that general pet stores cannot match. Their long history makes them a trusted and recognized establishment within the herpetological community.
Custom Caging Solutions: A significant highlight is their offering of "Reprite Cages," custom-designed "wooden enclosure with glass front" that are specifically engineered to maintain optimal "heat and humidity" for reptiles. The convenience of a "set up" service, where the enclosure comes with "all the equipment the animal needs" and is ready to "just add the pet, take the enclosure home and plug it in," is a major advantage for all keepers, especially those new to the hobby.
Expert and Experienced Staff: The staff, including the "Hoffmann's" themselves, are highly knowledgeable about reptiles and the hobby in California. They are described as "more than happy to help" and provide guidance on proper care, emphasizing that "these are creatures with feelings and needs" that "should be given the best care." This expert advice is crucial for responsible reptile keeping.
Comprehensive Post-Purchase Support: Unlike many pet stores, Hoffmann's offers services that "go beyond your original purchase, for the life of the animal." This includes "cage cleaning," "boarding," and "health checks," demonstrating a rare commitment to the long-term well-being of the animals and support for their owners.
Variety of Reptiles and Feeder Supplies: The shop stocks popular reptile species like bearded dragons and ball pythons, as well as exotic frogs, geckos, and turtles. They also provide a consistent supply of feeder insects and rodents, essential for the diets of many herps.
However, it's important for potential customers to be aware of certain challenges based on reviews. Issues with feeder insect quality ("smelled like death," "molded") and difficulty reaching the store by phone ("called them every day for a week and they don't answer the phone") have been reported. While the core services and expertise are strong, these operational aspects may require consideration.

Hoffmann's Reptile Shop Reviews
I decided to check out this shop getting feeders for my leopard gecko. I usually feed mine mealworms, but Hoffmann’s doesn’t stock those. I got super worms instead. I’m used to a few worms being dead when I buy a cup, but the cup that I got smelled like death. A bunch of super worms died, and molded in the bottom of the cup. I moved the living worms into a different cup (probably about 10/50).I probably won’t be back for food for my leopard gecko, since my preference is mealworms & BSFL. There’s a lot of cool animals in the shop though. I may come by for a frog in the future :)I didn’t see much available in the storefront for general supplies, but I think there are some items behind the counter.
Jun 25, 2024 · Dorothy BechlerI have called them every day for a week and they don’t answer the phone. By the time I get ahold of them my shakes will probably be dead.
May 01, 2025 · Angelique CopelExcellent service always have what I need been coming here for 30 years beak and nail trims to feed one stop shop
Feb 10, 2024 · alejandro hernandezThese guys are kind and helpful. The place is a little small and has a unique aura, but everything seems clean and safe. They don’t cohabitate the baby bearded dragons, which I appreciate. Also, very affordable- for example, the butter worms are 50 cents a piece and you can choose how many you get and they’re all alive, instead of an pack, and you don’t know if they’re all alive and you can’t choose how many you get. Plus, they have excellent parking. This is my go to place for all my bearded dragon feeder needs.
