PAWS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic

2900 Grays Ferry Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19146, USA

I love the convenience of this location and the prices are soooo affordable which I appreciate. They were able to provide a fast urgent dewormer and vaccination appointment for my puppy Maestro when I first got him and he had worms. The worms came back as they warned the eggs could hatch at a later date. I emailed for another appointment and booked after receiving a response a few days later. I mistakenly went in early than the appointment date I booked by accident and they were able to accommodate me which I truly appreciate. The only reason for losing one star is because during the first appointment, I had no idea that you could bring home fleas from this facility which actually happened, and I had to go out and purchase flea products, vacuum everything, wash everything. That was scary because it was so unexpected. I would think they would have some kind of preventative measures in place to ensure new customers wouldn't experience that. I keep my puppy in a carrier instead of having him on a leash now because I am afraid of having a repeat experience. But the staff are great, I still go here and I would recommend. - KiLovely

PAWS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic Introduce

For many pet owners in Philadelphia, ensuring our beloved companions receive the essential veterinary care they need can sometimes be a balancing act between quality, accessibility, and affordability. While comprehensive veterinary hospitals offer a wide range of services, there's a crucial need for clinics that specialize in high-volume, low-cost options for fundamental procedures and preventative medicine. This is precisely the vital role played by PAWS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic on Grays Ferry Avenue. As part of the larger Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), this clinic is dedicated to making crucial services like spaying, neutering, and routine vaccinations accessible to a broader segment of the community, ultimately contributing to a healthier and safer environment for all pets in our city.

PAWS understands that preventing pet overpopulation and common diseases is fundamental to animal welfare. Their clinic is designed to deliver these essential services efficiently and affordably, allowing more pet owners to provide their animals with the foundational care they deserve. For locals, this means having a reliable, cost-effective option for wellness visits, deworming, microchipping, and, most notably, spay/neuter surgeries. While their focus is on these core services, they maintain a commitment to compassionate care and efficient service, making them a cornerstone for responsible pet ownership in Philadelphia. They serve as a crucial resource, particularly for pet owners who might otherwise struggle to afford routine veterinary care at full-service private practices.

PAWS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic is located at 2900 Grays Ferry Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19146, USA. This strategic location places the clinic in the Grays Ferry neighborhood of South Philadelphia, making it a key local resource for pet owners in this community and beyond. Grays Ferry Avenue is a well-known thoroughfare, which aids in its recognition and accessibility.

For those traveling by car, the clinic's location offers relatively easy access from various parts of Philadelphia. It's situated near major routes that connect to different neighborhoods and even some surrounding areas. While specific parking details for the clinic aren't always explicitly advertised, being on a main avenue typically implies street parking is available in the vicinity, though it can vary based on time of day. For those utilizing public transportation, several SEPTA bus routes serve the Grays Ferry Avenue corridor, providing connections to other parts of the city. While the reviews mention the convenience of the location, they also indirectly suggest that it's a place where individuals might drive to, given concerns about transporting pets in carriers and potential exposure to fleas, highlighting the need for careful transport upon arrival. Its position within a residential area makes it a practical and accessible option for many local pet owners seeking their specialized services.

PAWS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic specializes in providing high-quality, low-cost essential veterinary services, primarily focusing on preventative care and population control. Their services are designed to be accessible and efficient for pet owners in need.

  • Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Surgery: This is a cornerstone service, offering affordable spay and neuter procedures for cats and dogs as a same-day service. Pricing varies by animal weight. They also offer a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for feral cats.
  • Vaccine Clinic Appointments: For healthy animals, PAWS provides basic vaccinations, including Rabies, FVRCP (cats), Distemper (dogs), and Distemper + Lepto (dogs). Other vaccinations are available as needed.
  • Wellness Clinic Appointments: These appointments are for routine exams and treatments for common conditions. A visit fee applies, plus the cost of any tests or medications prescribed by their veterinarian. It's important to note that these are for basic wellness, not for diagnosing complex health concerns.
  • Deworming: Affordable deworming treatments for puppies and adult pets.
  • Flea Treatment: Providing both topical flea prevention (over-the-counter) and oral flea preventative (with a veterinarian's prescription).
  • Microchipping: Affordable microchipping services to help reunite lost pets with their owners.
  • FIV/FeLV Testing (Cats): Testing for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and Feline Leukemia Virus, crucial for cat health.
  • Heartworm & 4DX Testing (Dogs): Testing for Heartworm, Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis. Heartworm preventative requires a yearly exam and prescription.
  • End-of-Life Services: Providing compassionate euthanasia services for cats and dogs, with options for communal or private cremation.
  • Prescription Refills: While not explicitly detailed, as they offer wellness visits and basic treatments, it's implied they can prescribe and refill certain medications for conditions they diagnose.

It's important to note that PAWS is generally NOT an emergency hospital, nor do they provide full veterinary services such as overnight care, extensive surgery (beyond spay/neuter and basic soft tissue), or advanced diagnostic imaging like X-rays (except for spay/neuter pre-screening if necessary) or detailed lab work for complex illnesses that require ongoing monitoring and specialist intervention. Their services are aimed at basic and preventative care to help pet owners who might otherwise face financial barriers to these essential needs.

PAWS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic is highlighted by several key features that make it a distinct and valuable resource for pet owners in Philadelphia, particularly those seeking accessible and affordable care.

  • Exceptional Affordability: This is perhaps the most significant highlight. Customers consistently praise the "soooo affordable" prices for essential services like deworming, vaccinations, and spay/neuter surgeries. This focus on low-cost care makes vital veterinary services accessible to a broader range of the community, including those who might have difficulty affording full-service vet fees.
  • Efficient and Fast Service: Reviews note the staff are "friendly, fast and efficient," particularly for vaccine clinic appointments. This efficiency is crucial for busy pet owners and helps maintain high-volume service.
  • Accommodating Staff: The staff are described as "great" and "friendly." A specific instance of accommodating a mistaken early arrival for an appointment demonstrates their willingness to go "above and beyond" for client convenience and pet needs.
  • Convenient Location: Situated on Grays Ferry Avenue, the clinic is easy to access for many Philadelphia residents, contributing to the overall convenience of seeking care.
  • Focus on Preventative Care: The clinic's core services (spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, flea treatment) are heavily focused on preventative medicine, which is crucial for overall pet health and reducing the burden on shelters.
  • Community-Oriented Mission: As part of the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), the clinic operates with a strong mission to reduce pet overpopulation and ensure that all savable pets in Philadelphia have a loving home. Their services are designed to support pet retention and responsible ownership.

However, it's also important to acknowledge certain aspects that, while part of their operational model, are notable for potential clients:

  • Appointment Scheduling Challenges: A recurring downside noted by customers is the "inconvenient" appointment scheduling. Slots open only one week at a time, and most appointments are during weekday middle hours, making it challenging for those with less job flexibility to schedule all necessary follow-up vaccinations or treatments, sometimes necessitating a transition to a full-service veterinarian for ongoing care.
  • Risk of Flea Exposure: One review highlighted an unexpected experience of bringing fleas home from the facility during a first visit. While the clinic offers flea preventative measures, this specific incident suggests a potential for exposure due to the high volume of animals, and new customers might benefit from being advised on preventative steps or carrying their pets in carriers.
  • Limited Scope of Services: While comprehensive for its niche, PAWS is not a full-service emergency hospital. This means they do not provide overnight care, extensive surgery beyond spay/neuter, or complex diagnostics for severe or chronic illnesses. Pet owners with such needs would require referral to other facilities.

In a bustling city, the ability to receive high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and deworming without breaking the bank is a significant advantage, directly supporting responsible pet ownership and contributing to the overall welfare of the animal community.

The clinic's efficient service, friendly staff, and willingness to accommodate unexpected situations (like an early arrival) are all factors that contribute to a positive experience for pet parents.
