Based on the provided customer reviews, here are key features and highlights associated with Pat's Pets. It is crucial to present a balanced view, including both positive and concerning feedback as available in public data.
Availability of Various Pets: Pat's Pets offers a range of live animals for sale, including puppies, birds, and fish, providing a local option for individuals seeking these types of companions.
Concerns Regarding Animal Sourcing (Puppy Mills/Backyard Breeders): Multiple reviews explicitly raise concerns about the origin of the puppies, using terms such as "puppy mill" and "backyard mutts." Customers express regret about not researching these practices prior to purchase.
Reported Health and Behavioral Issues in Purchased Pets: One customer reported their dog "has had cognitive issues since we got her," linking it to the purchase from the store. Another mentioned fish dying within a week of purchase despite correct tank parameters, and a bird exhibiting traumatized behavior contrary to what was described.
Concerns Regarding Animal Housing Conditions: Reviews describe animals appearing "sad crammed in tiny cages" and raise concerns about overcrowding and lack of separation among some animals, which reportedly led to fighting and stress.
High Pricing for Mixed Breeds: Customers noted paying "over $1,000+" for mixed-breed dogs, with comments suggesting these prices are excessive for dogs without health testing or clear lineage.
Perceived Lack of Genuine Care/Sales-Oriented Approach: Some customers felt that the staff were "nothing but sales people" and "don't care about the pets," with one reporting being "treated like idiots" and ignored when they expressed knowledge about high-end filters, leading to a perception of staff trying to "gouge people for price."
Inaccurate/Misleading Information from Staff: Reviews describe instances where staff allegedly provided inaccurate information, such as forcing the purchase of two Uros (lizards) on the premise that "they do better in pairs" (which resulted in one killing the other), or describing a bird as "used to being handled" when it was reportedly traumatized.
Past Welfare Checks: Public news reports (from 2018) indicate that the Mishawaka Police Department and the Humane Society of St. Joseph County conducted welfare checks at the store following social media videos showing animals in dirty cages without food. While officials were reportedly "satisfied with both the conditions and treatment of the animals" at the time of the checks, the historical nature of these concerns is noted.

Wish I researched this place and puppy mills before buying my dog. She has had cognitive issues since we got her. All the animals seem so sad crammed in tiny cages. Better to wait for a free adoption weekend at the humane society than pay $1,000+ for a mut
Apr 06, 2025 · Avery MontgomeryPuppy mill mutts with elaborate names to help you not feel bad about spending a ton of money on mixed breeds with no health testing. Congrats. Every time you buy a backyard mutt and pay $1000 you sign the death sentence of 5 shelter dogs waiting for homes
Jun 11, 2025 · Jess BeamanIt seems like a pretty good clean place and they take care of their animals. The only reason why I gave it a three stars because their dogs are so expensive. It's like they're going to sit in that poor cage for a long time because they're so expensive. It's sad because they're such cute dogs. Shouldn't be more about money. It should be about getting them kind caring homes instead. It's not. It's about money at this pet place
Mar 04, 2025 · Erin MeisterheimThis was heartbreaking, I almost started crying just looking at the conditions these animals are in, firstly. The dogs, I walked in and it reeked of feces and urine, the first dogs I see are three GERMAN SHEPHERD puppies in a small confined space covered in feces. Absolutely disgusting, I felt horrible seeing them covered in their own filth. Secondly, the guinea pigs. I personally own a few of my own in a 2x7 c&c cage and seeing these left me speechless they’re in a small tiny plastic box with 5+ guinea pigs in each one and one of them looked like they were passing away as I stood there. This place left me speechless and I refuse to buy or support anything to do with them.
