Best veterinary practice in town! I tell everyone about Dr. J Dolan & Dr. Emory Dolan. They are always very informative and want you to understand the pet's conditions, behaviors, etc. They always treat my pets well and are willing to fit them in when they need urgent care. I'll be moving 3.5 hours away, but I still plan to bring my dogs back to be seen at Colonial Vet! :) - Amy Woodard

Colonial Veterinary Hospital is a full-service veterinary hospital committed to providing comprehensive care for your pets. Their services are designed to address a wide spectrum of health needs, from preventive care to advanced diagnostics and treatment. They emphasize offering "quality, common sense veterinary care" and ensuring pet owners are well-informed.

  • General Medicine and Yearly Wellness Visits: They provide thorough yearly wellness exams, including discussions about your pet's lifestyle to make tailored recommendations for maintaining health and advising on appropriate vaccination schedules (many approved for 2 or 3-year intervals).

  • Sick Pet Visits and Urgent Care: The hospital makes every effort to fit in sick pets on the same day they are called, whether through drop-off or scheduled sick visit slots. They prioritize obtaining a thorough history of the illness and conducting examinations to make relevant test recommendations.

  • Diagnostic Services: Equipped with advanced diagnostic capabilities, they offer in-house laboratory services for blood chemistries, heartworm tests, and stool checks with quick results. For more advanced diagnostics, samples are sent to external laboratories like IDEXX. They also have an onsite digital X-ray unit for quick radiographic imaging and a new ultrasound primarily used for fast scans and ultrasound-guided techniques, with options for mobile ultrasound services when needed.

  • Surgery: Colonial Veterinary Hospital performs a variety of surgical procedures, including routine spays and neuters, growth removals, and more complicated abdominal procedures. They also offer Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) for Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) ruptures.

  • Dentistry: They are equipped for routine dental cleanings and extractions. As part of yearly physicals, they advise on dental procedures, utilizing careful monitoring during general anesthesia for these cleanings.

  • Hospitalization: While their usual policy is to send pets home the same day as a procedure, they have comfortable runs and cages with warm blankets and provide TLC for pets needing overnight stays.

  • Microchipping: They implant identification chips under your pet's skin, a crucial service for permanent identification should your pet ever become lost.

  • Referrals: For advanced diagnostics, specialized surgery, or emergency care beyond their scope, they provide appropriate referrals to specialists like VRCC, VVC, VVSA, CVCA, Veterinary Dermatology of Richmond, and Animal Eye Care of Richmond, often having a good idea of associated costs and facilitating information exchange.

  • End of Life Care: Understanding the difficult nature of losing a pet, they offer support for decisions about quality of life and comfort care, and assistance during the euthanasia process, partnering with services like Agape Pet Services for cremation.
