We purchased three lemon tetras and five Von Rio tetras for our established, planted aquarium. Almost immediately after releasing the Rio tetras into the tank, we noticed clear signs of ich (white spots covering the Rio tetras) - see photos. I called the store the same day, but they insisted there was nothing they could do, claiming, "Ich can be caused by anything, even just stress from your tank conditions." In reality, they quickly realized their Rio tetra stock was infested with ich and quarantined them right after selling some to us.Two days later, one of the lemon tetras died, and within 48 hours, all of our fish were wiped out. Instead of taking responsibility for their mistake and offering a refund, they refused to provide any compensation. The store doesn’t offer refunds—only store credit—which is incredibly frustrating. This rigid policy is especially unfair to beginner fish keepers who might not know which fish are compatible with their tank. Sometimes fish simply don’t get along, and in those cases, a return should be warranted. Unfortunately, this store has no flexibility in such situations. To their credit, the employees are nice and helpful. However, the owner is a different story. He wasn’t particularly friendly and outright told me all my fish would die if my pH was below 7.4, a comment that clearly showed he had no experience with CO2-injected planted tanks. While I generally prefer to support local businesses, I can’t recommend buying fish here unless you’re absolutely certain the stock is healthy and compatible with your tank. Their rigid policies, lack of refunds, and the owner’s dismissive attitude make them a poor choice compared to Petco, Petsmart, and Pet Supermarket. - Sepehr

The Fish Tank in Daytona Beach, FL, features several notable highlights that appeal to aquatic enthusiasts, while also presenting some areas of concern as noted by customer feedback:

  • Incredible Selection of Aquatic Life: A major highlight, consistently praised, is the "incredible store" with "all the beautiful saltwater and freshwater things under one roof!" Customers specifically mention "clownfish heaven" and "so much live coral," indicating a vast and appealing variety of fish and invertebrates for all types of aquariums. The presence of "huge walls of tanks full of interesting different species" further emphasizes this strength.
  • Beautifully Scaped Display Tanks: The store features "GORGEOUS tanks" that are "beautifully scaped and well stocked community tanks full of lush and thriving plants." These displays not only inspire customers but also showcase the potential of healthy aquatic environments.
  • Friendly and Helpful Employees: Customer feedback often points to "Great friendly staff and helpful" employees. These team members are generally appreciated for their assistance with purchases and basic guidance, contributing to a positive shopping experience.
  • Support for Local Businesses: The store is recognized as a local establishment, and customers are encouraged to "Check them out and support the local stores!" This appeal to community support resonates with patrons who prefer to invest in local businesses.

However, it is crucial to address significant concerns raised in a detailed customer review. These points detract from an otherwise positive impression:

  • Rigid No-Refund Policy & Store Credit Only: A major point of contention is the store's strict "no refunds—only store credit" policy. This rigid approach is described as "incredibly frustrating" and "especially unfair to beginner fish keepers" who might face issues like fish incompatibility or health problems, as a return or refund for unhealthy stock is not offered.
  • Issues with Fish Health and Response: A critical incident involved the sale of "Rio tetras" that showed "clear signs of ich" almost immediately after purchase, leading to the death of all the customer's fish. The store's response, insisting "Ich can be caused by anything, even just stress," and then reportedly quarantining their stock after the sale, suggests a lack of accountability and transparent communication regarding unhealthy fish.
  • Owner's Dismissive Attitude and Lack of Specific Knowledge: The owner was described as "not particularly friendly" and made a comment about pH levels (below 7.4 causing fish death) that "clearly showed he had no experience with CO2-injected planted tanks." This suggests a potential gap in specialized knowledge and a dismissive attitude towards experienced hobbyists.
  • Concerns about Fish Husbandry in Main Tanks: While display tanks are beautiful, the review noted that "the main stocked tanks leave a bit to be desired. not much in the way of plants or hiding spots in most of the tanks, which is unfortunate because they sell aquatic plants. not the cleanest either." This raises concerns about the general care and environment for fish awaiting sale.
  • Overall Confusion and Inconsistencies: One customer described the store as "one of the most confusing places I've ever had the pleasure of visiting" due to apparent inconsistencies in display quality and animal care practices, which could be off-putting for some visitors.

For locals in Daytona Beach, FL, The Fish Tank presents itself as a unique and often suitable destination, particularly for those with a strong focus on aquatic pets. While it has clear strengths, understanding both its positive attributes and the concerns raised by some customers is key to determining its suitability.

Its primary strength lies in its specialized focus on "all the beautiful saltwater and freshwater things under one roof." For dedicated aquarists, this means access to an incredible variety of live fish, abundant live coral, and a selection of aquatic plants. The "GORGEOUS tanks" and "beautifully scaped" community displays offer inspiration and a visual treat, which is a significant draw for hobbyists. This specialization fills a niche that larger, more generalized pet stores might not adequately cover, making it a go-to for specific aquatic needs.

The presence of "Great friendly staff and helpful" employees is also a strong positive, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere where customers can get assistance with their aquatic endeavors. For many, supporting a local business is important, and The Fish Tank has been a long-standing "staple" in the community for a reason, fostering a sense of familiarity and local pride.

However, potential customers, especially beginners, should be aware of the rigid "no refunds—only store credit" policy and the critical feedback regarding fish health management. The experience of receiving "ich-infested" fish and the subsequent lack of compensation, along with concerns about the owner's apparent lack of specific knowledge for advanced setups, are significant drawbacks. These issues suggest that while the selection may be vast, the after-sale support and consistent animal husbandry practices might not meet all customer expectations. Similarly, observations about cleanliness and lack of hiding spots in some main tanks are points for consideration.

In conclusion, for experienced aquatic enthusiasts in Daytona Beach who are confident in their ability to assess fish health and manage potential issues, and who prioritize a vast selection of aquatic life and live coral, The Fish Tank can be a suitable local option. However, beginners or those seeking more flexible return policies and guaranteed healthy stock might need to exercise caution or consider alternative options like larger retail chains for broader pet needs, as explicitly suggested by a critical customer. Supporting local is valuable, but informed decisions are crucial for the well-being of one's pets.
