The Serpentarium Introduce
For many Californians, pets extend far beyond the traditional furry friends. The fascination with the scaly and the amphibious has led to a growing community of reptile and amphibian enthusiasts. When it comes to specialized care, supplies, and even finding a new exotic companion, a dedicated store like The Serpentarium in Elk Grove becomes an invaluable local resource. This establishment caters specifically to the unique needs of these fascinating creatures, aiming to provide a comprehensive experience for both seasoned keepers and those just beginning their journey into the world of herpetology.
The Serpentarium positions itself as a premier destination for reptile and amphibian lovers. Their focus is on offering a diverse selection of exotic animals, along with all the necessary supplies and knowledgeable guidance to ensure these pets thrive. In a state as diverse as California, where interest in unique pets is strong, a specialized store like this fills a crucial niche. They strive to create an engaging environment where customers can learn about different species, their care requirements, and how to create optimal habitats.
While the general perception of a pet store might involve puppies and kittens, The Serpentarium embraces a different segment of the pet market, catering to those with a passion for snakes, lizards, frogs, and other exotic invertebrates. Their commitment is to provide the resources and expertise needed to support responsible ownership of these less common, but equally cherished, animal companions.
The Serpentarium is located at 9160 E Stockton Blvd #100, Elk Grove, CA 95624, USA. This address places it in a accessible part of Elk Grove, a rapidly growing city in the Sacramento metropolitan area. East Stockton Boulevard is a well-traveled route, making the store relatively easy to reach for residents within Elk Grove and neighboring communities.
Being situated within a commercial complex, the store likely benefits from available parking, which is a significant convenience for customers, especially when transporting live animals or larger supplies like terrariums. Its location within Elk Grove also means it serves as a central hub for reptile and amphibian enthusiasts across the Sacramento Valley. While public transportation options might be available, most customers in this region typically rely on personal vehicles for transport, and the store's setting accommodates this well. For Californian exotic pet owners, having a specialized store within reasonable driving distance eliminates the need to travel extensively for unique supplies or expert advice.
The Serpentarium specializes in the sale and care of reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids, offering a range of products and services tailored to these specific pets.
Sale of Live Reptiles, Amphibians, and Arachnids: They offer a diverse selection of exotic animals, including various species of snakes, lizards (like bearded dragons), frogs, turtles, and arachnids. The focus is on providing healthy animals, often sourced responsibly.
Terrarium and Vivarium Supplies: A comprehensive array of supplies needed to set up and maintain proper habitats, including tanks, enclosures, heating elements (lamps, heat mats), lighting (UVB bulbs), substrates, decor, and humidity control products.
Feeder Insects and Rodents: Essential for feeding many reptiles and amphibians, The Serpentarium provides a variety of live and frozen feeder insects (like crickets, mealworms, Dubia roaches) and rodents, ensuring pet owners have access to fresh and appropriate food sources.
Reptile Care Equipment: Beyond basic habitat setup, they offer specialized equipment such as misting systems, thermometers, hygrometers, water bowls, and hiding spots designed to meet the specific environmental needs of different species.
Consultation and Advice on Animal Care: The staff aims to be knowledgeable and available to provide tailored advice on animal care, feeding schedules, habitat setup, and general husbandry. This is particularly valuable for new reptile keepers who require guidance.
Reptile Surrender Site: The Serpentarium reportedly serves as a safe surrender site for reptiles, offering a responsible option for owners who can no longer care for their pets. This highlights a commitment to animal welfare beyond just retail.
Free Health Checks for Reptiles: The store may offer free health checks, providing reassurance for new pet owners about their pet's well-being and offering an initial assessment.
Discounted Equipment: They may provide discounted prices on various equipment related to reptile care, making it a more affordable option for maintaining exotic pets.
It is important for potential customers to recognize that, while specialized in exotic pets, the quality of animal health and staff practices can sometimes be a point of concern, as indicated by some varied customer feedback.
The Serpentarium, as a specialized pet store, has several features and highlights that draw in its target clientele, although some aspects have also drawn concern.
Specialized Focus on Reptiles and Amphibians: This is the primary highlight. Unlike general pet stores, The Serpentarium offers a deep inventory and intended expertise specifically for exotic cold-blooded animals, making it a go-to for enthusiasts. This specialization means a wider variety of unique animals and tailored supplies.
Knowledgeable Staff (Varied Experience): While some reviews praise staff for being "very knowledgeable" and genuinely caring, offering help with complex issues like a found lizard settling in, other feedback suggests inconsistency. Some staff are highly regarded for their expertise, taking time to answer questions and provide essential information for new keepers. However, critical reviews mention some employees lacking knowledge or being "standoffish."
Wide Variety of Animals and Supplies: The store aims to provide a diverse selection of reptiles and amphibians, from common species to more unique ones, along with comprehensive supplies for their care. This allows customers to find almost everything they need for their exotic pets in one place.
Customer Care and Follow-up: Positive reviews highlight instances of excellent customer service, including staff remembering customers and asking about their pets' well-being on subsequent visits. This personal touch can foster a sense of community and trust.
However, it is crucial to address concerns raised in some customer reviews, as these represent significant potential downsides for pet welfare:
Animal Welfare Concerns: A serious highlight of concern revolves around animal welfare. One review explicitly details a bearded dragon kept in unsanitary conditions, misidentified, and sold with undisclosed severe health issues (respiratory infection, impacted stones, impacted eggs) that required immediate emergency veterinary care. This suggests potential issues with animal housing, health assessment, and transparency regarding the animals' well-being. Accusations of "treating their reptiles like this" from a specialized store are deeply troubling.
Inconsistent Information/Misidentification: The instance of a bearded dragon being misidentified as a "leatherback" when it was a "normal beardie" raises questions about the accuracy of information provided by staff regarding animal genetics or morphs.
Customer Service Inconsistencies: While positive interactions exist, the explicit accusation of a "fake review" by the store and other critical comments about staff knowledge and demeanor point to a potentially inconsistent customer experience.
These conflicting reports suggest that while The Serpentarium aims to be a comprehensive resource, prospective customers should exercise due diligence, particularly regarding the health and care of live animals.

For Californians in the Elk Grove area with a specific interest in reptiles, amphibians, and exotic pets, The Serpentarium aims to be a unique local resource. Its specialization in these animals means it offers a selection of species and a range of tailored supplies that are often unavailable in general pet stores. For enthusiasts, this niche focus can make it a primary destination for acquiring new pets, setting up their habitats, and sourcing specialized feeders. The staff's stated commitment to education and providing advice on animal care is a valuable asset, particularly for individuals new to exotic pet keeping who require in-depth guidance. The reported willingness to provide free health checks and act as a reptile surrender site also points to a positive engagement with the welfare of these animals within the community.
However, it is crucial for local pet owners to approach The Serpentarium with caution and thoroughness, especially when considering the purchase of live animals. The contrasting reviews, particularly the serious concerns raised about the health and living conditions of some animals and the alleged lack of transparency regarding their medical issues, highlight the importance of careful observation and asking detailed questions about any animal being considered. While the store offers unparalleled access to exotic pets and their specific supplies, responsible pet ownership demands vigilance. For those seeking basic supplies or general advice, the store can still be a convenient local option, but potential buyers of live animals should consider seeking a veterinary health check promptly after acquisition to ensure the well-being of their new companion. The Serpentarium fills a specialized market niche in Elk Grove, but customers should prioritize animal welfare and their own due diligence to ensure a positive and responsible pet ownership experience.

The Serpentarium Reviews
My spouse and I went to this location to get something else. Saw a beardie that they were saying was a leatherback, totally isn’t, just a normal beardie. They said she’s a surrender, and they kept her in a 20 gallon, she’s also a full adult, with incredibly dirty water bowl and food bowl. We got the beardie home and the breathing and gulping that we were seeing, got concerning. We took her to an emergency vet, we found out that she has a respiratory infection, swallowed two stones and they’re stuck in her, and has a lot of impacted eggs. They didn’t mention that she was sick or anything, just that she’s overweight, which turns out it’s just the impacted eggs. Incredibly frustrating to see a store specializing in reptiles treat their reptiles like this. Now I’m being accused of a fake review? Really?
Jun 23, 2025 · WhateverIf you keep reptiles or amphibians (or you are thinking of keeping them), then this is the place to go. We recently found a lizard hiding in our car for who knows how long and my daughter wanted to keep it as a pet. We went into the Sepentarium and they helped us get set up. The staff seem very knowledgeable and genuinely care about the animals. They dont seem to try to upsell you on stuff you don't need. And they even remembered us when we came in several days later to get more crickets and asked how "Wolfred (the lizard)" was settling into his new home.
Jan 26, 2025 · Fish HeadI visit The Serpentarium from out of state because they're the closest genuine reptile store to me. It's a great place to get supplies and feeders, and they had a fantastic selection of woods. The animals appear well cared for (the most important thing!) and the staff is knowledgeable and happy to help. :)
May 11, 2025 · Devon HoweWe’ve been regularly coming here for well over a year since we got our leopard gecko. Customer service has always been excellent. Staff are always knowledgeable and friendly and help out with so much advice. The one thing I’ve always hated here though is the bad smell as soon as you open the door. I always would just mentally prepare myself for the smell and the place just not looking too clean. That was until tonight! We walked in tonight to a CLEAN store and no smell. It was amazing! I told the staff how impressed I was with the cleanliness of the store and the gross odor being gone. He said they’ve been working hard sweeping and moping more regularly. I really appreciated this so much and I hope they keep it up because it did make us feel so much more comfortable going there. As always, customer service was amazing.
