I wish I would have done my research before buying from this place… while we are soooo in love with our ragdoll cat we got from here about a year ago you can really tell his personality is totally effected by the way he was raised. There is two cats to a tiny glass cage what kind of life of socialization is that?? As soon as you walk into this facility it reeks of bleach which can not be good for the tiny puppies and kitten to be breathing in all the time. When we first brought our cat home I notice leakage from his eye and about a day later couldn’t stop coughing and hacking. I brought him to the vet and he had a terrible upper respiratory infection/ kennel cough that needed to be treated with antibiotics, this spreads rapidly so I’m sure all the other cats and animals had it as well and it went untreated. After doing continuous research after buying from this place I also later realized I was completely ripped off. I paid $4,500 for a ragdoll kitten when they typically go for $2000 which I didn’t know before buying from this place or I never would have. The experience over all to get the cat was super confusing bc I was contacting them weeks prior about the breed of cat I wanted and they were telling me they started at $1000. Now I live in Pa so I made a trip specifically to New York to get this cat. When I arrived they told me none of their ragdolls were less than $4000 and it’s the ragamuffins that were $2000. That’s an extreme jump and I went All this way and of course I fell in love with the ragdoll I wanted and spent $4500. They are not up front and honest about pricing upon arrival. My cat is also very to himself doesn't really want to be bothered and I have another Ragdoll who’s from another breeder that raises them in her home also only $2000 and he has a completely different personality and is way more loving and compassionate. I truly think the first weeks of a cats life matter sooo much in how your cat will turn out. Definitely don’t pet shop, instead buy directly from a breeder who raises them in their home. Take my mistake and don’t make it again buy from an in home breeder you will be much happier. - Kathryn Sles

The decision to welcome a pet into your life is significant, and ensuring that your new companion comes from a reputable source is paramount for their long-term health and temperament. Features / Highlights

When considering Westchester Puppies & Kittens, it's important for New York residents to weigh reported features and customer experiences.

  • Variety of Breeds Offered: The store appears to offer a range of popular puppy and kitten breeds, such as Ragdoll cats, giving customers options in their search for a specific type of pet.
  • Positive Initial Appearance (for some): One customer noted that upon their visit in 2023, "the place was really clean and the animals' cages were clean and the animals looked good," suggesting an effort towards maintaining a presentable facility.
  • Energetic Pets (for some): A positive review indicated that their purchased black Persian kitten was "healthy and very energetic and playful," suggesting that some animals acquired from the store do appear to be in good health at the time of purchase.
  • Concerns Regarding Animal Welfare and Socialization: Contrasting experiences highlight serious concerns about the living conditions and socialization of animals. One review stated, "There is two cats to a tiny glass cage what kind of life of socialization is that??" and noted a strong "reek of bleach," which raises questions about the long-term well-being and psychological development of the animals. Reports from external investigations by organizations like the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) and a 2019 settlement with the New York State Attorney General's office indicate that the store acquired animals from large-scale commercial "mills" rather than "home-raised" or "certified breeders" as previously advertised.
  • Prevalence of Health Issues Post-Purchase: Multiple customers have reported purchasing pets that developed illnesses shortly after coming home, such as "terrible upper respiratory infection/ kennel cough" needing antibiotic treatment. These are common issues associated with pets from large-scale breeding operations. The 2019 Attorney General's investigation also cited numerous complaints about illnesses commonly associated with "puppy mills."
  • Lack of Pricing Transparency and Perceived Overpricing: A significant concern is the alleged lack of upfront and honest pricing. One customer reported being quoted $1000 for a Ragdoll kitten prior to their visit from Pennsylvania, only to be told upon arrival that Ragdolls were $4000+, leading to a feeling of being "completely ripped off" after paying $4,500. This suggests potential deceptive practices regarding cost, which can be particularly frustrating for customers traveling long distances.
  • Behavioral/Temperament Concerns: One customer observed a marked difference in personality between a cat purchased from Westchester Puppies & Kittens ("very to himself doesn't really want to be bothered") and another from a home-based breeder, attributing it to the early life conditions and lack of proper socialization. This aligns with broader concerns about animals from less enriching environments.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For New Yorkers considering acquiring a new puppy or kitten, Westchester Puppies & Kittens in Hartsdale presents a complex picture. While some individuals have reported positive initial experiences and healthy pets, it is crucial for local residents to be fully aware of the significant and recurring concerns raised by other customers and external investigations. These concerns include allegations of animals being sourced from commercial breeding operations (often referred to as "puppy mills"), health issues such as respiratory infections immediately following purchase, and a lack of transparency regarding pricing. The New York State Attorney General's office even settled with the store over deceptive advertising practices concerning the origin and health of their animals.

Given these points, New York pet owners who prioritize the ethical sourcing, early socialization, and guaranteed health of their new companions may find it more suitable to explore alternatives. Reputable in-home breeders, local animal shelters, and rescue organizations often provide more transparent information about an animal's background, health history, and early developmental environment. These options generally align more closely with responsible pet ownership practices and can lead to a more predictable and positive long-term relationship with a new pet. While Westchester Puppies & Kittens exists as an option in the local market, a thorough understanding of its reported challenges is essential for any New Yorker before making such a significant decision.
