I was making an attempt to give this place zero stars but I couldn’t. Worst experience I’ve ever dealt with to open up 2025. The doctor’s attitude was the absolute worst. My dog showed signs of life during our visit. They said everything was negative. By the end of the day, he couldn’t even hold his head up. My little girl and I came back to get a second opinion. They were closed. It did seem like they were rushing to get out of there. Thank you for making my little girls new year experience a sad one. - Tony Carmack

Animal Emergency-Critical Care: Buford Barb DVM Introduce

For pet owners in Toledo, Ohio, and surrounding communities, the thought of a pet emergency can be incredibly distressing. When sudden illness or injury strikes, access to immediate, specialized veterinary care is paramount. This is where dedicated emergency and critical care facilities, such as Animal Emergency-Critical Care: Buford Barb DVM, play an indispensable role. This article aims to provide an honest and informative overview of this facility, associated with MedVet Toledo, to help local pet owners understand its purpose and how to navigate its services during a pet crisis.

Animal Emergency-Critical Care: Buford Barb DVM, which operates as part of MedVet Toledo, is an emergency and specialty veterinary hospital. Its core mission is to provide advanced, comprehensive emergency care for dogs and cats when their primary veterinarian is unavailable or when the situation requires specialized equipment and expertise. Unlike a routine veterinary clinic that handles annual check-ups and minor ailments, an emergency and critical care center is equipped and staffed to manage life-threatening conditions, severe injuries, and acute illnesses that demand immediate attention.

Dr. Barb Buford, as an Emergency Medicine Veterinarian and Medical Director at MedVet Toledo, leads a team focused on stabilizing and treating pets in critical condition. Their work is an extension of what family veterinarians provide, offering an essential safety net for pet owners in Northwest Ohio during challenging times. They are prepared for a wide range of urgent situations, from accidental poisoning and severe trauma to sudden onset of serious diseases. The unpredictable nature of emergencies means that while they strive for efficient care, wait times can occur as cases are triaged based on severity, similar to human emergency rooms.

Located at 2921 Douglas Rd, Toledo, OH 43606, USA, Animal Emergency-Critical Care: Buford Barb DVM (MedVet Toledo) boasts a central and accessible position within the city. Douglas Road is a well-trafficked thoroughfare, making the facility relatively easy to locate and reach for residents throughout Toledo and its surrounding suburbs, including Sylvania, Maumee, and Perrysburg.

The importance of accessible emergency care cannot be overstated. When a pet's health is rapidly declining, minimizing travel time is crucial. The facility's location on Douglas Road offers good connectivity to major roadways, facilitating quick transport during a crisis. Ample parking is typically available, a small but significant convenience when you are likely under considerable stress. However, it is vital for pet owners to be aware that while emergency facilities aim to be readily available, it is always recommended to call ahead. Some past customer experiences have highlighted confusion or extended wait times, emphasizing the necessity of confirming current operating hours and advising the clinic of your arrival, especially for time-sensitive emergencies. This proactive step can help the team prepare for your pet's specific needs and provide guidance even before you arrive.

As an emergency and critical care veterinary hospital, Animal Emergency-Critical Care: Buford Barb DVM (MedVet Toledo) offers a specialized array of services designed for urgent and life-threatening conditions. Their capabilities extend far beyond typical primary veterinary care. Key services generally include:

  • Emergency Triage and Stabilization: Immediate assessment and stabilization of critically ill or injured pets upon arrival, including managing shock, respiratory distress, and severe bleeding.
  • Trauma Care: Comprehensive treatment for pets involved in accidents, falls, or animal attacks, encompassing wound management, fracture stabilization, and internal injury evaluation.
  • Advanced Diagnostic Imaging: On-site access to digital radiography (X-rays) and ultrasonography for rapid and precise diagnosis of internal conditions or injuries.
  • In-House Laboratory Services: Expedited blood work, urinalysis, and other laboratory tests for quick and accurate diagnosis, essential in emergency situations.
  • Emergency Surgery: Capability to perform a wide range of urgent surgical procedures, such as foreign body removal, laceration repair, and procedures for conditions like gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat).
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU): Continuous monitoring and advanced support for critically ill or post-surgical patients, including intravenous fluid therapy, oxygen therapy, and continuous pain management.
  • Poison Control and Toxicology: Management of pets who have ingested toxic substances, including induced vomiting, administration of antidotes, and supportive care.
  • Pain Management: Aggressive and tailored pain management protocols to ensure the comfort and well-being of pets experiencing acute pain from injuries or medical conditions.
  • Referral and Collaboration: Close communication and collaboration with your primary veterinarian for seamless transition of care once your pet is stable enough for discharge and continued treatment.

It is important to reiterate that these services are specifically for emergency situations. For routine check-ups, vaccinations, or ongoing management of chronic conditions, your regular family veterinarian should be your first point of contact.

  • Focus on Acute Conditions: Their specialized focus allows for efficient and expert management of immediate, life-threatening issues, prioritizing stabilization and urgent treatment.

However, it is crucial for pet owners to be aware of the experiences some customers have reported. While the facility is designed for emergencies, online reviews sometimes mention long wait times or concerns about staff demeanor and quality of care, particularly regarding explanations of treatment or perceived professionalism. It is essential for pet owners to maintain open communication, ask questions, and advocate for their pet's needs during highly stressful emergency situations. Due to the nature of emergency care, patient prioritization is based on the severity of the condition, which can lead to extended waits for less critical cases, similar to human emergency rooms.
