This clinic focuses exclusively on avian and exotic animals, offering a depth of knowledge and a tailored approach that conventional veterinary practices might not provide.
Avian & Exotic Animal Medical is a practice built upon specialized expertise and, for many clients, a profound level of care. While one review highlights a regrettable lapse in administrative empathy, the overarching sentiment, particularly concerning Dr. Goodman and her team, points to a highly skilled and compassionate medical staff. As one client gratefully shares, Dr. Goodman "truly has a gift and is amazing at what she does," having successfully treated guinea pigs for complex issues like lice, UTIs/stones, and even performing neuters. This introduction aims to provide you with a clear overview of Avian & Exotic Animal Medical, detailing its specialized focus, accessible location, typical services offered for exotic species, and the unique highlights that make it a suitable choice for residents of Pennsylvania seeking expert care for their less common, but equally cherished, animal family members.
Avian & Exotic Animal Medical is conveniently located at 3000 Concord Rd, Aston Township, PA 19014, USA. This address places the clinic in a readily accessible part of Aston Township, ensuring ease of reach for pet owners throughout Delaware County and the broader Pennsylvania region who own avian, reptilian, or small mammalian companions. Concord Road is a well-established route, making navigation to the clinic straightforward whether you are driving from nearby communities such as Media, Chester, or Garnet Valley, or from other areas requiring specialized exotic animal care.
The accessibility of Avian & Exotic Animal Medical is a significant advantage for owners of unique pets who often need to travel further to find specialized veterinary care. Being situated on a recognizable road like Concord Road simplifies travel, reducing potential stress for both pets and their owners. Ample parking is typically available at facilities located on such main thoroughfares, contributing to a smooth and hassle-free arrival and departure experience. This convenience is crucial, particularly when dealing with the often delicate nature of exotic animals. The clinic's dedicated focus on avian and exotic species means that the environment is often more tranquil and less stressful than a general practice with barking dogs and meowing cats, creating a calming atmosphere that benefits these sensitive patients. This specialized and easily accessible location firmly establishes Avian & Exotic Animal Medical as a vital resource for Pennsylvania's exotic pet community.
Avian & Exotic Animal Medical specializes exclusively in the care of avian (bird) and exotic animal species, offering a comprehensive range of veterinary services tailored to their unique physiological needs. Unlike general practices, their focus allows for a deeper understanding and specialized equipment for these animals.
Specialized Wellness Exams: Routine physical examinations specifically designed for birds, reptiles, and small mammals (e.g., guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas, hamsters, rats, mice, sugar gliders). These exams often include husbandry and nutritional counseling unique to each species.
Diagnostic Services: Utilizing advanced diagnostic tools crucial for exotic pets, such as in-house laboratory testing (blood work, fecal samples for parasites, urinalysis), digital radiography (X-rays), and potentially other imaging techniques. One client specifically mentioned a "fecal sample" for a bunny, indicating standard diagnostic practices.
Medical Treatment for Illnesses: Diagnosis and treatment for a wide variety of conditions common in exotic pets, including respiratory issues, gastrointestinal problems, skin conditions, and internal infections. Dr. Goodman is praised for treating guinea pigs for "lice, UTI/stones," demonstrating expertise in specific exotic pet ailments.
Surgical Procedures: Performing specialized surgeries for exotic animals, which can include soft tissue surgeries like neutering (as highlighted by a guinea pig neuter), tumor removals, and other procedures unique to these species. They also perform dental procedures for bunnies, chinchillas, mice, rats, and guinea pigs.
Dental Care for Small Mammals: Specific dental procedures for animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas, whose teeth continuously grow and often require professional trimming or "drilling down" to prevent malocclusion and related health issues.
Parasite Control: Effective prevention and treatment strategies for external and internal parasites specific to exotic animals, such as the "lice" treatment for guinea pigs.
Nutritional and Husbandry Counseling: Providing expert advice on appropriate diets, caging, environmental enrichment, and general care practices that are crucial for the health and longevity of exotic species. They stock specialized foods like Harrison's and Roudybush for birds, and Oxbow products.
Behavioral Consultations: Addressing behavioral issues common in exotic pets, often linked to husbandry or health, to improve their quality of life and the human-animal bond.
Boarding Services: They provide boarding services specifically for their own clients, offering a safe and knowledgeable environment for exotic pets when their owners are away.
Avian & Exotic Animal Medical truly stands out due to its specialized focus and, for many, the exceptional quality of care provided to unique pets. While one review highlighted a negative administrative interaction, the consistent praise for the medical team, particularly Dr. Goodman, points to several compelling features:
Specialized Expertise in Avian & Exotic Medicine: This clinic’s exclusive focus on birds, reptiles, and small mammals means their veterinarians and staff possess a depth of knowledge and experience far beyond what a general practice can offer. Dr. Goodman is noted as having a "gift" and being "amazing at what she does" in treating guinea pigs for complex issues. Their website states Dr. Goodman became board-certified in Avian Practice in 1993, highlighting her extensive expertise.
Highly Skilled Medical Team: The successful treatments mentioned for guinea pigs (lice, UTI/stones, neutering) demonstrate advanced medical and surgical capabilities specific to exotic species. This specialized skill is crucial for accurately diagnosing and effectively treating conditions in animals whose physiology differs greatly from dogs and cats.
Calm Environment for Sensitive Species: As a clinic that does not see dogs or cats, it provides a much calmer and less stressful environment, which is highly beneficial for the often timid and easily stressed nature of exotic animals like bunnies and guinea pigs. "No barking dogs or meowing cats means no stressed patients."
Personalized and Dedicated Care: The positive reviews emphasize that the team, specifically Dr. Goodman, shows genuine care for their patients. This personal touch is essential when dealing with pets that may mask illness and require attentive observation.
Focus on Species-Specific Needs: From specialized dental procedures for continuously growing teeth to specific diagnostic approaches, their care is tailored to the unique biology and behavior of each exotic species they treat. They stock specialized foods and implants for exotic pets.
Long-Standing Reputation (Inferred): While one review was negative about administrative interaction, the presence of multiple positive reviews, some implying long-term relationships, suggests a clinic that has built a solid reputation for its medical expertise in a niche field.

Avian & Exotic Animal Medical Reviews
I brought my bunny here for facial swelling. She was diagnosed with an inner ear infection and had her teeth drilled down. She was put on several medications. After I left they called and said they forgot to bill me for her fecal sample. My bunny seemed to be improving until suddenly I found her dead. When I called to tell the vet, the receptionist Linda said she was sorry to hear it and without even taking a breath said I had an outstanding balance for the amount they forgot to bill me and could I clear it with her now over the phone. I was livid and luckily didn’t say what I truly wanted to say. She couldn’t have displayed any more rudeness or lacked any more empathy. My poor baby must have been misdiagnosed and I’m upset because I feel I failed her by going here.
Feb 14, 2025 · Debra GriffinDr. Goodman and her team are incredible! I have four Guinea pigs and Dr. Goodman has treated them for lice, UTI/stones, and neutered one of my boys — she truly has a gift and is amazing at what she does. Dr. Goodman and team, thank you for all that you do!
May 29, 2025 · Caroline CapuzziDr. Goodman helped my husband and I with our hamster, Leela. We only had her for about a month and she started to get big in her midsection with severe behavior changes. Soon enough we realized we most likely wouldn’t have enough time with her, but still, we took her to see Dr. Goodman as an emergency vet visit. After calling 8 different veterinarian places…Dr. Goodman fit us in that same day thankfully! She gave us plenty of helpful hamster care tips and as well as her truthful opinion on Leela’s health. We held out hope, but she did inform us it was very likely that Leela didn’t have much time. Later that day our Leela did pass away. We received a card in the mail last week from Dr. Goodman regarding our little hammie who passed. She also called us back the next day after we informed her of the news and left us a compassionate voicemail. Thank you for willing to see & care of our Leela! In the future we know where to go if our other hamster ever needs a checkup. Such friendly staff too! :)
Jul 01, 2024 · Kali MunizBrought a bunny we recently adopted to see Dr Tyson. Bunny was in GI stasis, feels like we got there just in time. Dr did a thorough exam, filed down teeth that were preventing bunny from eating, gave meds, did bloodwork, and sent us home with instructions and confidence to do what we needed to. Techs in the practice are great, as is front desk staff. Love Dr Tyson! highly recommend her practice!
