What is Worth Choosing: A Partner in Health and Affordability
For residents of Minnesota, choosing a veterinary provider is a significant decision. Granite City Pet Hospital offers a compelling case for why it is an excellent choice, particularly for those who value both high-quality care and affordability. The reviews, though containing some constructive feedback about wait times, are overwhelmingly positive about the core of the service. The story of the client who brought in a pet with an abscessed tooth is a powerful testament to the hospital’s commitment. The fact that Dr. Nelson and his staff were able to perform the necessary surgery for a "FRACTION" of the cost of other estimates highlights a dedication to making essential care financially accessible. This is a crucial factor for many pet owners and showcases the hospital's genuine concern for the community.
The positive feedback about the staff is another key reason to choose this hospital. The apathetic and kind interactions from the nurse and secretary, who took the time to explain information and make a kitten feel comfortable, are invaluable. These small, personal touches create a trusting and welcoming environment that can make a huge difference, especially for a pet that is nervous about vet visits. The clinic’s comprehensive approach, offering boarding and grooming services in addition to medical care, simplifies the lives of pet owners and allows for a consistent standard of care across different needs. Whether you need a check-up, a place for your pet to stay, or even advanced rehabilitation, Granite City Pet Hospital has you covered.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have taken my kitten Juniper here twice now for her shots. They are a little more expensive and I barely got a few words in with the vet himself. The wait time is insane, both times I come in for the appointment and have had to wait 20+ minutes the first time and 30+ the more recent time. The rooms reek of cleaner which is a slight concern. They don't always answer the phone and you will have to call back later.Positive:I had the same secretary and nurse both times and they are both very nice. The secretary is kind and explains all the information and will give and explain extra pamphlets if interested. The nurse I have gotten is really sweet and friendly to Juniper, she calls her Tiny Tot, which is funny. She works well to give shots and examine for check ups, understanding my cat and making the experience not scary for her. I don't know either of their names which is sad because they are great.I have attached photos of Juniper (my cat) here, including two of her first visit.
March 10 · Danika KingI cannot speak highly enough of Dr Nelson and his staff! They are caring, communicative and AFFORDABLE! We received estimates, for our very much loved 12 year bunny, 900-2000.00 to extract an abscess peg tooth. This amazing hospital got our special guy in right away and did the surgery for a FRACTION allowing us to get him healthy and eating again. They also removed a mass from another of our bunnies last year for a minimal cost as to compared to any other place. I can't thank them enough and tell everyone I know to go here! Thank you for the work you do and allowing people to give their pets the care they need!
August 06 · Bobbi GaveExpert, Compassionate Support for International Pet Travel, Especially to JapanBringing a pet into Japan is not easy AT ALL, it’s a 6+ month process with strict rules around timing, documentation, and government approvals. After completing the initial steps in Los Angeles, I took the cats to central Minnesota to wait out the post-titer 180 period with family and was referred to Granite City Pet Hospital by our local veterinarian for the final USDA-endorsed health exam and export paperwork. From start to finish, the staff was kind, efficient, and knowledgeable. The USDA-accredited veterinarian was excellent. But the person who truly made everything come together was their outstanding vet tech, Leah.Leah was not only highly experienced with international pet export (particularly Japan), but also incredibly accommodating. I had some unique needs—Japan requires a pre-arrival approval process that goes beyond standard USDA steps, or that are listed in official documentation and I asked her to take specific photos of each submission screen and send them to me so I could forward them to Japan’s Animal Quarantine officers.Despite the extra workload and the USDA’s notoriously clunky system, Leah handled everything with patience, professionalism, and real attention to detail. She kept in touch with me throughout the day via text, responding quickly and thoroughly to every request. It was a huge relief during a stressful time. She also worked with the vet to find safe and effective travel anxiety medication for my 16-year-old cat with a heart murmur—a small but incredibly important detail that showed how much she cared. If you’re anywhere near central Minnesota and need to take a pet abroad or get a "pet passport"—especially to a country without rabies & has strict import requirements like Japan (or New Zealand)—Granite City is the practice you want, and Leah is the person you need.Their pricing is fair, which really matters when you’re already looking at $1,000+ in export-related costs per animal. But more importantly, the quality of care and support is exceptional.
June 12 · Leah WorkmanDr. Nelson deserves NO stars. Albeit, it has been 10 years, to the date, since our 9-year-old Mauzer named Gypsy left us, we still miss her very much. Dr. Nelson examined Gypsy on a Friday for a heart rate of 160 BPM for over 12 hours. She waited all day to be seen and discharged without any med to slow her heart rate or to calm her. A member of the Minnesota Board of Veterinarians told us she would not send a horse home with that heart rate. Dr. Nelson DID NOT express any concern that she was dying or offer to hospitalize her.Early morning, the following Monday, after suffering more than 48 hours, Gypsy passed.
February 28 · Catherine ElleringWait times have become longer and longer. Hard to be seen. Incredible staff but at what point does it become enough? Feels like you are not really given the time of day. By the time you are seen it feels like the doctor is already thinking about the next animal they will have to see. PLEASE either get another doctor to see the animals or cut back how many appointments you take within the day. It never used to be like this. Heartbreaking but something has to change at this clinic.
