River Oaks Veterinary Clinic Reviews
I am rather conflicted to write this review. On one hand, I have been going to River Oaks Veterinary Clinic for over 10 years. Even though I live a bit far away, I chose to make the journey here because I trusted them. The care that my pet received for most of her life here was great. On the other hand, I feel as though a ball was dropped somewhere within this past month or two.In early April, my dog had a vomiting spell that lasted over 24 hours and she completely lost her appetite. She was given fluids and anti-nausea meds and they ran a blood test.During another visit in May, she was diagnosed with a faint heart murmur. At the end of May, she had dental work scheduled and we decided to rerun her blood work for it. I was called and told her blood work was okay for the procedure, but when I went to pick her up it was only then I was told her blood work actually showed anemia. I was advised to put her on multivitamins and we'd recheck her in a month's time.We didn't have a month to wait and see. Less than a week later, on June 5th, her anemia worsened to the point where she was stumbling when she tried to stand. I tried calling and I was told there were no doctors in on that day, to try an emergency vet, and that they'd follow up with me the next day. Understandable, and that is what I did.I ended up in and out of two different emergency clinics several times over Thurs-Mon, closer to where I live. During this time, the following occured:-The first emergency vet on Thursday requested the most recent, pre-dental blood work. They initially sent the wrong one from April, and it took around 2-4+ hours to get the correct one.-I did not receive the next-day follow up call.-I left a voicemail when they were closed, where I said she was in bad condition and that I'd like to get an opinion from the vet that knew her better if they could get back to me. I did not hear back from that, either.-At a second emergency vet on Saturday, I called and requested that her most recent blood work and parasite tests be sent to me directly so that I could share it more easily wherever I went(which would also lessen the work for them as well). I even told River Oaks' receptionist that my dog was in the ER in urgent condition. The response? No questions, no sympathy, no asking how she was doing or what was going on, no well wishes. Just a confirmation that they'd send her blood work and that was it.My dog was ultimately diagnosed with a cancerous intestinal mass which was likely a partial blockage, with secondary conditions quickly escalating, and that she needed abdominal surgery ASAP.It wasn't until my father called River Oaks on the following Monday, asking for surgeon recommendations, that they finally reached out to me to ask how she was doing. At that point, all of the diagnostic work, surgery scheduling, supportive care and overall game plan had been put in place elsewhere.I'm not quite sure what happened here.Maybe the front desk forgot to follow up with the rest of the team. Maybe my concerns weren't taken seriously. Maybe they were so busy they simply forgot, or didn't have the time. This veterinary clinic has been thorough in the past when diagnosing my dog's allergies, they've been understanding and flexible with scheduling, and I never felt like they were trying to push anything on me unnecessarily.I do want to thank Rick as he is the one who did reach out to me multiple times after Monday, and he is a very kind and gentle vet tech. Crystal was always pleasant to speak with and I believe my dog was fond of her as well.I know hindsight is 20/20 for diagnosing. But treating only the symptoms, or waiting and seeing, nearly costed the life of my dog. The lack of communication over those intensely stressful days didn't make me feel like a valued client of so many years, or that my dog was cared about, and instead made me feel like I was being a nuisance despite the horrifying situation unfolding. It is unfortunate, but I don't believe I will be coming back here if this is the new norm for this practice.
Jun 26, 2025 · Alex TaylorI have made the decision of cancelling my appointments & Never coming back.I had initally moved my pets from another vet because they were not able to handle my cat. He is a rescue & terrified of being picked up or even held. it broke my heart that the other place would not even accomadate him cause he can be very sweet. I found this place & felt great how the doctors were able to take care of him & do everything they needed to do. unfortunately, The office manager is the one that ruined it. I got a call the day prior confirming my cats appointment. I repeated the time in my head multiple times before confirming with the representative because I am also a mom of two & work full time. I agreed & told them I would bw there at 10:30 am. I notice the signs outside that say to call before entering, because these signs are posted everywhere still because of COVID 19 I figure that, that’s why does were up.I was not once during the confirmation called reminded to call before entering the building(again my second visit) nor was I reminded to give my cat his medicine. I later that day remembered & made sure he took them. When I walked in, I was not greeted. I have done sales & customer service for over 10 years now. I always take the iniative to greet people. The office manager was in the front desk with another staff member & all I was told was “DID YOU CALL?!” I was baffled because of the tone but I remain calm & said um no, but I have an appointment at 10:30. The office manager then asks me for who & she goes “WELL YOUR LATE & MISSED YOUR APPOINTMENT” I was like huh? cause I swear I was told 10:30 am all I said was “uhhhhhh” & she goes NVM, take a seat & the doctor will still see him. I said oh okay. as I am waiting for her to check us in. a gentlemen walks in with his dog. & she’s talking so loud say “Is someone over there, who just walked in” the guy waiting to pick his dog up behind me stare towards the guy that walked in & I said oh it seems someone has an appointment as well & she yells to the guy with his dog “DID YOU CALL?!” the guy tells her I have an appointment. She goes with the other staff member “Maybe we need bigger signs” again baffled by her rude sarcasm. I go and sit down as I was not told to wait outside. after the two gentlemen left she keeps going saying “We need to get bigger signs sine people cant see” she was going on and on about this whole thing. As a paying customer that was just a little too much so I had to say something. I was not rude but did state “this is my second time here & I honestly did not pay mind to signs as I thought they were there because of covid19. I said it would maybe be best if the staff could remind people to call beforw walking in while they are doing confirmation.” she goes okay well I’ll talk to my staff and let them know. She kept sarcastically making rude comments so I asked her if she was the office manager & said yes, I told her well you shouldnt be talking about paying customers this loud. We come to this establishment hoping to get the service our pets need & not be talked to like that. She then starts walking towards me & I put my hand out telling her to keep her distance & she didnt need to come any closer that it is fine where she is standing. She then says well I dont want to raise my voice thats why im coming closer at this point all the staff is out watching us. I said m’am you been talking very loud the entire time I’ve been in here. She then stops & says im just going to walk away. I said you do that. another staff member ended up applogizing to me while my cat was getting checked out. I told him that is was okay & that I would let it go. before his apology I stepped outside because I was told a dog would be coming out with a lot energy & told if I could sit on the other side. I told him I would rather step out. As I am sitting there, a lady is struggling with her dogs & her son. I mentioned to her it’d be best to call before walking in.
Jul 02, 2025 · Jaqueline OzunaI called and made an appointment for both my dogs. When I arrive, I’m told that they can’t be seen because they’re past due on a visit. I have a newborn baby. I wish they would’ve said something I do not live in this area. I came all the way out when I made the appointment. I asked the receptionist if she could check my account to see what was needed and she said that all in needed were a couple of shots and then I could come in today. I think it’s highly unprofessional that I get sent away after driving almost an hour to get here and only being told I’m sorry we can’t do nothing for you. My last time doing business here they could’ve at least tried to accommodate one dog.
Feb 28, 2025 · Jamie “Face & Nails” JulissaMy dog had to be put down yesterday… for almost 2 weeks my Helene has been treated for the wrong disease… I have been telling the assistant and the receptionist I think you are not acknowledging the symptoms I keep telling you and you are not focusing on the real suffering my Helene went thru.. yesterday my Helene had to be rushed to the er in Manassas and she had to be put down immediately… the doctor and the assistant did not listen to me and my concerns and had my dog suffer and drained my pockets for false diagnosis… the doctors at med vet in Manassas figured out in 15 mins what was wrong with her but it was already to late… Helene had to be rest to sleep.. my husband will put another review with more detail on my Helene suffering cause I can’t put my emotions and words together at this time… I pray to god that no other dog will have to go thru this like my Helene did at this vet office…
Jun 27, 2025 · Melanie HaddockROVC is an awesome clinic. They do get backed up at times, but it is a ONE vet practice. These people, especially the older staff that I have gotten to know, genuinely care about the animals and understand I am a bit emotional about my 14 year old dog. Dr. McCorkendale takes his time to explain things to owners about what is going on and is very reasonably priced.
