Took my senior dog there because he was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease at urgent care and I don't have a primary vet. The vet wasn't the friendliest and never smiled but after some concerning bloodwork she sent home an iv for subcutaneous fluids to be given daily for 10 days and then recheck his kidney levels then. As I was checking out I asked if I'd get a printout of discharge instructions and she said the vet would email it as soon as she was done. I never received an email and after a $465 bill you'd think I could get a piece of paper. She also didn't give me the test results of 2 of the tests.Even worse I realized later that evening that she gave me 1 bag of fluids which is 1000ml and I'm supposed to give 500ml the first day and 200-300 for the next 9 days. No matter how you add that up it means I have enough to last 3 days. It is also a holiday weekend so they are closed Fri-Sun so my dog is going to have to go without any fluids at all for 1 day until they open on Monday. I wish I could get a refund, I definitely did not get my money's worth.*EDIT* I received the discharge summary email over 24 hours after my appointment and half the things she said we discussed were never mentioned. There are also no instructions about how much fluid to give and for how long. - Katie Kirkhuff

Location and Accessibility

Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital is conveniently located at 2277 Ford Pkwy, St Paul, MN 55116, USA. This address places the clinic within the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul, a bustling and easily accessible area. Ford Parkway is a significant road, ensuring that pet owners from various parts of St. Paul and the wider Twin Cities metropolitan area can find the hospital without undue difficulty.

Being situated within a Petco store can offer a unique level of convenience for many local pet owners. It means that while you're attending to your pet's medical needs, you might also be able to pick up pet food, toys, or other supplies, consolidating your errands into one trip. The location typically provides ample parking, which is a major benefit, especially when transporting pets who may be ill or anxious. The hospital generally operates with hours that accommodate busy schedules, often including weekday and weekend availability, though it's always advisable to confirm specific hours, especially for holidays. This integrated approach within a retail setting aims to make veterinary care more accessible and less of a separate, daunting trip for Minnesota pet owners.

Services Offered

Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital aims to provide a comprehensive range of veterinary services, catering to various aspects of pet health from routine care to more complex medical needs. While specific offerings can vary by location and veterinarian, generally their services include:

  • General Wellness & Preventative Care: This encompasses routine annual wellness exams, tailored vaccination programs (including rabies, distemper, and more), parasite control for fleas, ticks, and heartworms, and microchipping for pet identification. They also offer nutritional counseling to help pets maintain a healthy diet and weight.
  • Diagnostic Services: The hospital utilizes various diagnostic tools to accurately assess pet health. This typically includes in-house laboratory services for blood work, urinalysis, and fecal tests. They also offer radiography (X-rays) for internal imaging and may provide advanced diagnostics like ultrasounds and even CT scans for a more detailed look at internal organs, cysts, and tumors. Endoscopy may also be available for internal examinations and biopsies.
  • Surgical Services: Vetco Total Care performs a range of surgical procedures. This commonly includes routine surgeries like spaying and neutering to help control pet populations and improve long-term health. They also handle soft tissue surgeries for various non-joint or bone-related conditions, and some locations may even offer orthopedic surgery for joint problems or broken bones. Laser surgery might also be utilized for certain procedures.
  • Dental Care: Comprehensive dental services, including routine dental cleanings, extractions, and potentially dental X-rays to assess oral health.
  • Urgent Care: While not a 24/7 emergency hospital, they can often accommodate urgent sick visits during their operating hours, addressing immediate concerns like vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Pharmacy Services: An in-house pharmacy for convenient access to necessary medications, prescription diets, and preventative treatments.
  • End-of-Life Care: Compassionate services and support for pet owners during difficult end-of-life decisions.
  • Laser Therapy: Some locations may offer non-invasive laser therapy to help reduce pain, inflammation, and speed healing for various acute and chronic conditions.
Features / Highlights

Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital, as part of a larger network, often presents specific features designed to appeal to pet owners seeking convenient and comprehensive care. However, client experiences can sometimes vary, providing a more complete picture.

  • Comprehensive Service Range: As a "Total Care" facility, they offer a wide array of services from preventative care to surgery, aiming to be a one-stop shop for most pet health needs. This can be a significant convenience for busy pet owners in Minnesota.
  • Accessibility and Convenience: Being located inside a Petco store on Ford Parkway offers inherent convenience, allowing pet owners to combine veterinary visits with shopping for pet supplies. The ability to book appointments online (or with future capabilities) also adds to ease of access.
  • Focus on Preventative Health: Like many modern veterinary practices, they emphasize vaccinations, parasite control, and routine wellness exams as crucial components for a pet's long and healthy life. They often highlight packages or memberships (like Vital Care Premier) that include unlimited routine exams.

However, it's also important to acknowledge customer feedback, which provides additional perspective on the client experience:

  • Mixed Customer Service Experiences: While some customers describe the staff as "incredible," "patient," and "sweet," others have reported less friendly interactions, with specific mention of a vet who "never smiled" and perceived lack of empathy. This suggests variability in individual experiences.
  • Communication Issues: A recurring concern in some reviews points to communication gaps, such as delayed or incomplete discharge instructions and test results not being provided immediately. For pet owners managing serious conditions, clear and timely communication is paramount.
  • Logistical Challenges with Supplies: Instances where a pet was not given enough medication or supplies (e.g., IV fluids) for the prescribed treatment duration, especially over a holiday weekend, highlight potential logistical challenges that can significantly impact a pet's care and owner's peace of mind.
  • Transparency and Value: While Vetco often promotes transparent pricing and no exam fees for certain services (e.g., vaccination clinics), some clients have expressed concerns about perceived value for money, particularly when critical information or sufficient supplies are not provided post-visit.

These points suggest that while the breadth of services and accessibility are strong features, consistency in communication and patient-readiness can vary. Prospective clients in Minnesota might consider inquiring about specific protocols for discharge instructions and medication dispensing, especially for ongoing treatments.
