For pet owners in East Aurora, New York, and the wider surrounding areas, exploring diverse approaches to veterinary care can be a key part of ensuring their beloved companions lead healthy and fulfilling lives. While traditional medicine plays a vital role, some owners seek practices that also integrate complementary and alternative therapies. In this regard, Veterinary Alternatives, led by Dr. Keonig, offers a distinct approach to animal well-being. This article aims to provide an overview of their services, location, and what sets them apart, helping local New York residents understand if this unique veterinary option is the right fit for their "fur baby's care."
Veterinary Alternatives, under the guidance of Dr. Keonig, presents a unique proposition in the East Aurora veterinary landscape. The practice focuses on integrating various healing modalities, aiming to provide a holistic approach to pet health. Dr. Keonig is noted for staying up-to-date with different therapeutic methods, suggesting a commitment to continuous learning and offering a broader spectrum of care options beyond conventional treatments. While their approach is praised for its proactive nature and individualized attention, as highlighted by a positive review, it's also important for potential clients to understand the nuances of this type of practice. The emphasis on "different healing modalities" and taking time to answer questions indicates a personalized and thorough consultation style, which can be highly appealing to owners seeking more comprehensive and integrated care for their pets. However, the nature of such a specialized practice might come with specific operational structures, which potential clients should be aware of.
Veterinary Alternatives is located at 1535 Blakeley Rd, East Aurora, NY 14052, USA. This address places the practice in a more suburban or semi-rural setting within the East Aurora area, offering a potentially quieter and more private environment for pet visits compared to a bustling main street location. While not directly on a primary commercial artery, Blakeley Road is still accessible for residents of East Aurora and neighboring communities in Erie County. Pet owners planning a visit should familiarize themselves with the route, especially for their first appointment, to ensure a smooth journey. The location contributes to the overall ambiance of the clinic, potentially appealing to those who prefer a less urbanized veterinary experience for their pets.
Veterinary Alternatives focuses on providing comprehensive care with an emphasis on various healing modalities. Based on client feedback, their services extend beyond typical conventional veterinary offerings, incorporating integrative approaches to pet health. While a complete list of all services is not available, the provided information highlights key areas:
- Holistic and Integrative Veterinary Care: This is the core philosophy of the practice, combining conventional veterinary medicine with complementary therapies to treat the whole animal, not just symptoms.
- Acupuncture for Pets: As explicitly mentioned in a customer review, acupuncture is a service offered. This traditional Chinese veterinary medicine technique involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to promote healing and alleviate pain, often used for conditions like arthritis, neurological disorders, and chronic pain.
- Herbal Medicine: The practice incorporates the use of herbal remedies, as evidenced by a customer receiving "some herbs" for their dog. Herbal medicine can be used to support various bodily systems, address chronic conditions, and complement other treatments.
- Consultations and Patient Education: Dr. Keonig is noted for taking time with her patients to answer questions, suggesting a strong emphasis on client education and thorough discussions about treatment options and pet health. This personalized approach is crucial for integrative medicine where owner understanding and participation are often key.
- Proactive Care: The recommendation to "Go before you have a crisis to be proactive with care" implies an emphasis on preventive and long-term wellness strategies, rather than solely reacting to acute problems. This aligns well with holistic principles.
- General Veterinary Health Assessments: While specific details aren't provided, it can be inferred that they conduct general health check-ups and assessments to determine the best course of integrative treatment. This would typically include physical examinations to evaluate a pet's overall health before implementing specialized therapies.
Veterinary Alternatives possesses several features and highlights that distinguish it within the local New York veterinary landscape. These aspects are often what draw specific clients to their practice, seeking a different kind of care for their animal companions.
- Commitment to Diverse Healing Modalities: Dr. Keonig's dedication to staying "up to date with different healing modalities" is a significant highlight. This ensures that the practice can offer a broader spectrum of treatment options, including alternative therapies like acupuncture and herbal medicine, appealing to owners interested in integrative approaches.
- Personalized and Thorough Consultations: The emphasis on taking "time with her patients to answer questions" indicates a patient-centered approach. This allows for detailed discussions about a pet's condition and treatment plan, empowering owners with information and fostering a collaborative relationship.
- Proactive Care Philosophy: The advice to "Go before you have a crisis to be proactive with care" suggests a strong focus on preventive health and long-term wellness strategies, rather than just reacting to acute symptoms. This forward-thinking approach is often a hallmark of holistic practices.
- Specialized Expertise: The offering of services like acupuncture implies specialized training and expertise in non-traditional veterinary treatments, providing options that might not be available at conventional clinics.
- Potentially Specialized Operating Hours: While not a highlight in the positive sense, a review noted that Thursdays are "one of their very few days open." This suggests that the practice may have limited operating hours compared to conventional clinics. Prospective clients should verify their schedule to ensure it aligns with their needs, especially for urgent situations.
- Communication Challenges (as per a review): One customer reported significant issues with email communication, including emails ending up in "trash" and delayed responses, particularly during a pet crisis. This indicates an area where the practice might need to improve to meet client expectations, especially given the cost of services.
- Cost of Services (as per a review): A customer highlighted concern about "the amount of money they charge," suggesting that their specialized services might come at a higher price point. This is an important consideration for potential clients to factor into their decision-making.

Mar 21, 2025 · Cynthia CraigI was so hopeful when someone recommended this vet. We went in for our first visit where my dog received acupuncture, and we went home with some herbs. The next day I noticed an open wound on my dog's face and monitored it for a few days as it didn't seem to bother him and appeared to be scabbing over. He must have scratched it open which led to an infection. I emailed the vet (on a Thursday morning which apparently are one of their very few days open) letting them know of the situation and the severity of it. My dog's face was now infected, and he spent the night crying. I received an email back that they were closed, and the doctor would get back to me soon. I never heard back from them until it was time for my dogs follow up appointment from the month before! Apparently, my email ended up in the trash.I cannot even begin to express how disappointing this is considering the amount of money they charge! How can you not make a crying dog a priority, let alone having your email end up in the trash....
Jan 14, 2025 · Cierra HollerDr Koenig spends a lot of time with our pets. Our Rottie, Archer, gets his nails clipped....takes about 20 minutes the way Dr. sculptures them and his constant pulling away. She is so patient and determined. Then he gets an adjustment, acupuncture and laser. This has been very helpful for him as he’s a big boy with some mobility issues. Right now we are dealing with a possibly malignant neck issue. Dr. Koenig has been helping to get more help. We are thankful a friend recommended her years ago.
