Vital Animal Veterinary Clinic Introduce
For pet owners across Sioux Falls and the wider South Dakota region, finding comprehensive veterinary care that embraces both conventional Western medicine and advanced holistic practices can be a game-changer for a pet’s long-term health. Vital Animal Veterinary Clinic, located in Sioux Falls, offers this unique, integrated approach. This practice is dedicated to the belief that every animal has the ability to find balance and health, blending traditional diagnostic and surgical capabilities with alternative therapies like acupuncture and herbal medicine.
The clinic, led by Dr. Lisa Coder, DVM, serves as a beacon for comprehensive, whole-body health. Dr. Coder brings a diverse background to the practice, having graduated from the University of Missouri in 2013 and worked in various settings, including equine, mixed animal, and emergency medicine, and even served as a public health veterinarian. This wide-ranging experience underpins her philosophy of providing a safe, comfortable, and compassionate place for all members of the community, both human and animal. Dr. Coder's passion for alternative and holistic veterinary practice initially saw her launch 'Home Vet' in 2021, which later expanded to become Vital Animal Veterinary Clinic in 2023, continuing a legacy of care in the same location for over 25 years.
Vital Animal Veterinary Clinic is renowned in the area not only for its commitment to small animals but also for being a trusted resource for owners of exotic animals and pocket pets. Clients who own "exotic critters" often make the trip to Sioux Falls specifically for the in-depth, lasting treatment they receive here, appreciating that the team takes the time to thoroughly understand their unique pets. This specialization, combined with a focus on reasonable pricing and sometimes same-day appointments—even when other vets refer to the ER—makes the clinic a highly valuable resource for South Dakota pet families facing stressful or urgent situations.
Customer feedback illustrates a deep appreciation for the personalized care. One long-time client praises Dr. Lisa as a "smart and valuable person" who has been a consistent source of knowledge and support for over 25 years in the same building. This client notes that the team is knowledgeable, friendly, and truly cares, often going out of their way to provide support for crucial decisions. However, it is important for potential clients to note that while many reviews highlight positive experiences, particularly with the staff’s friendliness, knowledge, and ability to handle complex cases, a small number of reviews have pointed to significant communication and financial transparency issues during high-stress situations. Vital Animal Veterinary Clinic emphasizes clear policies, including a zero-tolerance policy for abuse, and maintains that appointment and payment processes are in place to ensure professional standards. As with any medical provider, clear and upfront communication is key, and clients are encouraged to discuss all aspects of the treatment plan and associated costs fully before proceeding.
This commitment to a holistic approach, which can include both pharmaceutical solutions and non-traditional therapies, means pet owners have a full spectrum of choices available to ensure their animal is as healthy and happy as possible. The clinic strives for lasting relationships, welcoming pets and people from all walks of life into their "family" environment.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1- We where there about a month ago with our black cat bear she is about 13 years old she needed some masses removed from her belly area, they removed those sent us home with pain meds, said to come back Monday for a check up we come back she's very infected they wanted to do another surgery reopen her get it all out again, BUT would only do it if we paid 524 up front!! After paying 227 for the first one!! We pay for the second one get medication and pain meds and told how to help keep her clean we even made a area in our living room to where she couldn't run around and get out, again bring her back on Monday for check up I bring her in get rudley yelled at because I didn't call so made me leave and come back Thursday for the scheduled appointment, Dr Lisa comes in and says she's still infected "where not taking proper care of her" my daughter and I where doing more than what they told us to do we could tell she was getting better because she ended up getting out of her area we made her tore part of the drainage tube, so they said we are keeping her over the weekend and walked out, I check in on her Friday she was doing good Monday Comes I ask how she is when we can come pick her up they said we sent an email was to much to text in order for us to get our cat back they wanted ANOTHER 565!! They never communicated about having to pay or we would have went a different direction on what more we needed to do at home! Cops ended up getting called because they wouldnt give us our cat. They where very unprofessional about it suck at communicating! Its not the same since doc has been there has gone down hill one thousand percent money hungry don't go here!! - The veterinarian, Lisa is a smart and valuable person after my last veterinarian past away. She is knowledgeable and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable as well. Decent prices and they truly care. Even though my last pet has past, I Wil still stop and say hi. I've gone to the same building for over 25 yrs or vet care. Whenever I needed an answer or support for a decision they have been there. May 15 · Amanda Riedel
- I give them 0 stars if I could! I have a turtle with a with a cyst. Took him to this vet, asked what I can do? They said they can open it and drain it. Never mentioned a removal so I thought it was the same thing. I agreed and got it done for almost $400 then the cyst never fully went away so I asked them about it and they said they could actually remove it for another $550-$650. I replied well I wish you guys would have offered that in the first place and I don’t think that’s right! If they knew he would’ve needed a removal an not just drained they should’ve of offered that in the first place. I let them know I don’t know if I want them to do that now as I feel they were just ripping me in for the money! I’ll have to think about it!One wk after that phone call I received a letter in the mail stating that they feel they can no longer assist me with my animals and wish me luck finding another vet.In response to what Dr. Lisa said!First of all my turtle has a cyst which is very common to what kind of turtle he is! They are not complicated to take care of! 2nd I asked as many questions as I possibly could one of the questions was why does it still feel like he has a rock in their you guys explained it just needed time to drain more. 3rd regarding the pain meds I tried for a few hrs to deliver the liquid pain meds to him as directed but could not get him to open his mouth to do so! I called you guys and you guys suggested giving it to him with food out of water, which is funny because if you are a vet that knows more than I do you would know he can’t eat out of water he’s a aquatic turtle and they need the water to eat so they don’t choke which I explained to you. So I observed him while trying to come up with an idea to some how get it in him mean while you never offered an alternative other than the one oral med for pain management. The next morning he started perking up acting normal and alive like him self I talked to you guys about it and you guys said that’s great as long as he’s doing all his normal things I said ya he’s eating swimming and basking as normal so pain management was not absolutely needed. So no I NEVER refused anything. 4th I never got angry with anyone of your staff during this process. The last phone call I made was to ask for more details about the last two options you offered which was for the more expensive services or just to put him down for a lesser price! I was sad and worried about those options and I never was rude or mean in any manner and I know cuz I made that phone call while being video and audio recording by a security camera. 5th is you don’t want to offer services to who can’t afford your prices or anyone that points out you and your staff are in the wrong and stand up to you! - We switched this year to Vital. My 4 cats are well taken care of. They are comfortable with the staff working with them and the staff are very good to my babies. The Vet doesn't believe in unnecessary tests and procedures so you won't have an inflated bill. May 06 · Allie Erickson
- These guys are great. We stayed with them when they took over for Dayton Williams, and we’ve been really pleased. When my pittie was having orthopedic trouble, Dr Lisa went over all the possibilities to make sure he was correctly diagnosed and the correct treatment provided. When medication was required, we discussed cost vs. benefits so I wasn’t destroyed financially, but still made sure my animals received the best care possible. I can’t recommend them enough!
