Aquatic Paws specializes in services that promote canine health, fitness, and rehabilitation, primarily through the power of water. Their key offerings are designed to be therapeutic, safe, and enjoyable for dogs of all ages and abilities:
- Underwater Treadmill Sessions: This is a cornerstone service at Aquatic Paws. The underwater treadmill allows dogs to exercise in a buoyant environment, significantly reducing stress on joints while still providing resistance for muscle building. It's ideal for dogs recovering from surgery, managing arthritis, or those who need a low-impact workout due to age or weight. The controlled environment and adjustable water levels make it suitable for a wide range of needs.
- Canine Hydrotherapy: Beyond the treadmill, Aquatic Paws offers comprehensive hydrotherapy, leveraging the therapeutic properties of water to improve circulation, reduce pain, increase range of motion, and build muscle strength. This form of therapy can be incredibly beneficial for dogs with various musculoskeletal conditions or those simply needing a gentle way to stay active.
- Assisted Swimming: For dogs new to water or those needing extra support, the staff provides assisted swimming sessions. This helps dogs gain confidence in the water and ensures they are comfortable and safe during their exercise, making it an excellent introductory experience for water-nervous pups.
- Personalized Exercise Programs: Understanding that every dog is unique, Aquatic Paws likely offers tailored exercise plans based on a dog's specific needs, health conditions, and fitness goals. This personalized approach ensures the most effective and beneficial outcomes for each canine client.
- Post-Injury & Post-Surgery Rehabilitation Support: For dogs recovering from injuries or surgical procedures, Aquatic Paws provides a crucial component of their rehabilitation journey. The low-impact nature of the underwater treadmill and hydrotherapy helps in rebuilding strength and mobility without risking re-injury, working in conjunction with veterinary recommendations.
Aquatic Paws distinguishes itself with several key features and highlights that make it a standout facility for Virginia pet owners:
- Specialized Focus on Canine Hydrotherapy: Unlike general pet stores, Aquatic Paws is dedicated entirely to canine aquatic wellness. This specialization means they possess expert knowledge, equipment, and techniques specifically tailored to hydrotherapy and its benefits for dogs.
- Highly Experienced and Caring Staff: Customer reviews consistently praise the staff as "fantastic." Their ability to work with dogs, even those with no prior swimming experience or those feeling nervous, is a significant highlight. They demonstrate genuine affection and care, making the experience positive and comforting for the dogs.
- Therapeutic Environment for Mobility Issues: For senior dogs or those suffering from severe conditions like arthritis or ACL ruptures, the underwater treadmill offers a vital and often pain-free way to exercise. This facility fills a crucial gap for pet owners whose veterinary clinics might not offer frequent access to such specialized equipment.
- Effective for Rehabilitation and Conditioning: Whether it's for post-surgical recovery, managing chronic conditions, or simply maintaining fitness, Aquatic Paws provides an effective means to build muscle, improve conditioning, and enhance overall mobility for dogs who might otherwise struggle with land-based exercise.
- Positive Reinforcement: The use of positive reinforcement, such as peanut butter treats, helps create a positive association with the water and the exercise, ensuring dogs look forward to their sessions and feel comfortable during their visits.
- Enhances Quality of Life for Senior and Ailing Dogs: For dogs with chronic pain or mobility challenges, Aquatic Paws offers a way to regain some independence and enjoyment through exercise, significantly enhancing their quality of life.

Aquatic Paws Reviews
My poor girl has been struggling in this heat, and I've also noticed her favoring her back hip. This was a great way to get her more exercise and start to expose her to water. The staff was fantastic, because she has no experience swimming, they recommended to start her with an underwater treadmill to get her comfortable with water. My dog loves the affection and peanut butter she received. We'll definitely be coming back!
Jul 14, 2024 · Jarrett BrumettMy senior dog has severe arthritis of both elbows and shoulders and recently ruptured the ACL in his right knee. He is not a good candidate for surgery and the only rehab exercise he can do now without pain/lameness is walk on an underwater treadmill. His veterinary clinic can only schedule access once every 1-2 weeks, which isn't enough to maintain his conditioning. I feel so lucky to have a local facility with an underwater treadmill where he can get much needed exercise and build up the muscles to support his knee.
Dec 28, 2024 · Lisa LeeThe best place to rehabilitate your puppy. Chaya, my little pup, had to go to surgery to completely fix her back leg that was broken when i adopted her. And even with that procedure there was a risk she wouldn’t have the leg back 100%. Since she had been restrained for many months i don’t really wanted to keep restraining her after the surgery so i tried to go tho therapy. It worked like a charm and she is now a happy, jumpy, and playful little dog!
Oct 31, 2019 · Eduardo Caceres YoungOur fur toddler (10yrs old), Geo has severely arthritic hind knees and muscle atrophy. We noticed a significant difference in his walks after just 3 weeks on the treadmill. Not only is he stronger and moving better, he loves going to his appointments at Aquatic Paws! Today he went in the pool for the first time. I can’t say enough great things about how much going to Aquatic Paws once a week has and continues to help our Geo.
Aug 20, 2021 · Jen ToalAquatic Paws is truly a blessing. I took my dog here after she was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy to help her keep her leg strength. The staff was always so kind and attentive, and really went above and beyond to help her. The pricing is more affordable than the options for water therapy in DC, and in my opinion, well worth the drive.
