Petco Introduce
For pet owners living in and around the District of Columbia, finding a reliable and well-stocked pet store is essential for ensuring the health and happiness of their beloved animal companions. Petco, located on New York Avenue NE, stands as a prominent option for residents seeking a wide array of pet products and services. As a familiar name in the pet retail landscape, this Petco location aims to serve the diverse needs of DC's pet-loving community, offering everything from daily essentials to specialized items for various types of pets.
The experience of visiting a local pet store can significantly impact a pet owner's routine, and accessibility to a comprehensive range of products is often a top priority. Petco on New York Ave NE endeavors to provide a convenient solution for those living in neighborhoods like Trinidad, Ivy City, NoMa, and even further afield within the District, seeking to stock up on food, treats, toys, and other necessities for their furry, feathered, or scaled friends. Understanding the typical demands of urban living, a well-located store like this can be a frequent stop for many DC residents.
While Petco is a widely recognized brand known for its extensive inventory, individual store experiences can vary. Local patrons visiting the New York Ave NE location might notice certain aspects of its operation. One observation from a customer highlighted that "the first thing I notice is that the employees tend to stand around near the registers, looking at their phones, with no greetings or much engagement." For those who value personalized assistance and a welcoming atmosphere, this is a point worth considering when planning a visit. A friendly and engaged staff can significantly enhance the shopping experience, providing valuable advice and assistance, especially for pet owners navigating specific needs or product choices.
The layout and organization of a store also play a crucial role in customer satisfaction, particularly in a busy urban environment. Another customer noted that "the store layout is a bit odd, making it harder to navigate and find what you need. While the shelves are generally well-stocked, the organization could be improved." This feedback suggests that while the availability of products is generally good, the efficiency of the shopping trip might be impacted by how items are arranged. For local shoppers in a hurry, clear signage and intuitive organization can make a substantial difference in their ability to quickly locate desired items and complete their purchases.
Regarding pricing, customers generally find that "Prices are comparable to other Petco locations." This indicates consistency with the broader brand's pricing strategy, meaning that local residents can expect similar costs for products as they would find at other Petco stores, which can be helpful for budgeting pet expenses. This consistency can be a reassuring factor for regular shoppers who prefer predictability in their spending.
It's important for local pet owners to be aware of the range of services offered and how they are perceived by the community. Pet grooming is a service that many pet stores provide, and this Petco location is no exception. However, recent customer experiences suggest areas where the grooming service might not consistently meet expectations. One customer shared a particularly challenging experience with a standard poodle grooming, noting issues such as having to pay before seeing the dog, a stylist not having necessary equipment (ear plucking tools), and a confrontational interaction with a stylist regarding a refund request. This situation escalated to the point where the customer felt compelled to record the interaction, highlighting significant customer service concerns.
The feedback regarding grooming services, specifically involving communication and professional conduct, indicates that pet owners considering grooming at this location may want to inquire thoroughly about specific procedures and discuss expectations beforehand. The customer's comment, "When I asked to speak to the manager and request a refund, the stylist named Keshia asked the manager why she was giving me a refund and began to go back and forth with me as the customer about why I should not receive a refund," points to potential challenges in resolving service-related issues on-site. Furthermore, concerns about the general manager being unavailable and a lack of follow-up suggest that addressing complex service problems might require reaching out to corporate channels.
Despite these specific concerns, Petco locations generally aim to be a comprehensive resource for pet owners. They typically carry a vast selection of pet food, including specialized diets, as well as an array of toys, bedding, training aids, and health supplements. For residents of DC, having a local Petco means access to these foundational pet supplies without needing to venture far from their neighborhoods. The sheer volume of products available at a large chain store often means that shoppers can find almost anything they need for their pets in one convenient stop.

Petco Reviews
I don’t visit this Petco often, but when I do, the first thing I notice is that the employees tend to stand around near the registers, looking at their phones, with no greetings or much engagement. I also saw a lady picking up her dog from grooming, and she didn’t seem happy with the service. I’ve never had my dog groomed here, but based on other reviews and what I saw, I probably wouldn’t. The store layout is a bit odd, making it harder to navigate and find what you need. While the shelves are generally well-stocked, the organization could be improved. Prices are comparable to other Petco locations.
Apr 01, 2025 · Eric FeazelI had the worst experience at this location. I took my standard poodle to get groomed and ear plucked. The service I received was beyond poor. 1. I had to pay for the service before even seeing my dog2. I was told my dog ears weren't plucked before the stylist didn’t have the equipment (this is Petco get them off the shelf)3. When I asked to speak to the manager and request a refund, the stylist named Keshia asked the manager why she was giving me a refund and began to go back and forth with me as the customer about why I should not receive a refund. She also proceeded to tell me it was not only her responsibility to clean my dog's ears.4. She told me and the floor Manager that she trimmed Shadow's ears. I have a standard Poole and trimming his ears is not ideal as the Hair will fall back into his ears and give him an ear infection. A stylist or professional would know that. When I notice Keshia was starting to be confrontational and the manager could not control the situation. I started to record her once she realized I turned my camera on, she walked away. I will not be returning to the New York Ave location because when I asked to speak to that’s the lawn manager I was told she went on vacation and the general manager that was in the back would not be able to help. I will be reaching out to corporate because all of a sudden, now my App is telling me to book a groom, I must call. this has never happened as I’ve been a part of the loyalty program for over six years. May 31, 2025 · Joe JacksonThis establishment's lack of professionalism left me extremely disappointed. Despite having a scheduled grooming appointment for my 10-month-old Toy Poodle at 12:00 PM, I was informed upon arrival that walk-ins would be seen before her. Despite this setback, I patiently waited and even inquired about the expected completion time to plan around my work meetings, only to be given conflicting information.Returning for an update around 3:00 PM, I was told the grooming would be completed by 5:15 PM. However, upon my arrival closer to 5:30 PM, I was disappointed to see my dog just beginning the grooming process. The groomer, Jordan, then informed me that due to my dog's irritability and matted hair, they might not be able to complete the service. It's important to note that I spent considerable time before the appointment ensuring my dog was well-groomed and mat-free. I even provided a picture of my desired cut for reference, clearly showing the extent of grooming required. Therefore, it was surprising to hear that her hair was deemed too matted to be manageable when in reality, she only required a trim. After a discussion with the manager, I was promised a refund and asked to return another day. When I finally received my dog, I was shocked to see her hair was unevenly cut, much shorter than expected, and she was visibly distressed, likely due to her hair obstructing her vision.Despite emphasizing the need for patience and proper care for my dog, it was evident that little care was taken during her grooming. I urge others to consider alternative grooming options altogether.
Jun 05, 2024 · Diamond TerrellThis has to be one of the worst grooming experiences I’ve ever experienced. I took my dog in for a 1:15 pm appointment and I ended up coming early and dropping him off around 12:45-12:50 pm. Idk if the groomer was just in a bad mood or overwhelmed but she didn’t even really ask me any qualifying questions about what I wanted so I sent the groomer a video of a hair cut my dog previously had and wanted her to replicate (screen shot of video is attached). I understand if you are unable to replicate something but just be honest about it and do something within your skillset. It then took over 6 hours for my dog to be done, I understand things happen but to wait over 6 hours for my dog and to see that his hair on his ears isn’t even just frustrated me so much. She claims it’s because the hair was matted on his ears but even if that’s the case, that doesn’t justify an uneven and careless end product that my dog received.I was charged $106 for a terrible work product and i can say with 100% certainty, I will not return again. Petco, you should be ashamed that you are even allowing a grooming salon in your store because clearly there is a lack of skillset and professionalism.
Aug 26, 2024 · Michelle ZamanTook time off work and an uber to get to a grooming appointment and they refused to take my dog. We were ten mins late (which is the grace period). The groomer, Blessed, was extremely inflexible to work with me to find a solution. After speaking to another customer, they were extremely behind schedule already and most likely would’ve refused my dog if i had been there on time. She also said this groomer has refused her twice, even when on time with no phone call ahead of time.Additionally, i was told my 20lb dog wouldve take 4 hours. Why is there even an option to schedule less than 3 hours before closing?I can acknowledge it that i was running late, but from reading other reviews, it sounds like them cancelling is common. What a waste of time and money.
