Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic Introduce
For pet owners throughout Indiana, particularly those in the Indianapolis metropolitan area, finding specialized veterinary care for beloved exotic and non-traditional pets can often be a challenge. Unlike dogs and cats, these unique companions—from vibrant cockatiels and slithering snakes to curious rabbits and tiny rodents—require a distinct understanding of their physiology, behavior, and specific medical needs. Fortunately, in Indianapolis, the Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic stands as a pioneering and highly respected institution, dedicated entirely to the health and well-being of these special animals. Established in 1985, it is one of the nation's first veterinary practices of its kind, offering unparalleled expertise and compassionate care that sets it apart as a true leader in exotic pet medicine.
The Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic is conveniently located at 9330 Waldemar Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46268, USA. This location in the northern part of Indianapolis makes it readily accessible for pet owners not only within the city limits but also from surrounding communities in central Indiana. Waldemar Road is well-connected to major thoroughfares, ensuring a straightforward journey for those traveling from various parts of the region. For pet owners with anxious or delicate exotic animals, minimizing travel time and navigating complex routes is crucial, and this location helps facilitate that. While the specific parking situation is not detailed, being within a professional area typically allows for adequate parking. The accessibility of this specialized clinic is a significant advantage for owners who might otherwise have to travel long distances to find veterinarians with the necessary expertise for their unique companions.
The Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic offers a comprehensive range of medical and surgical services, exclusively tailored for exotic and non-traditional pet species. Their dedicated focus ensures that care is never generalized from canine or feline models but is specifically designed for the unique physiology of each species. Their services include:
- Comprehensive Wellness Exams: Regular check-ups are paramount for exotic pets, as many are masters at hiding illness. These exams include reviewing husbandry, discussing early disease detection, and providing the latest advancements in exotic pet care.
- Advanced Diagnostic Services: The clinic features extensive diagnostic capabilities, including in-house laboratory services, diagnostic imaging such as ultrasound, radiography (X-rays), and an in-house CT scanner. This allows for precise and rapid diagnosis of complex conditions.
- Full Medical and Surgical Care: They provide a complete spectrum of medical treatments for illnesses and injuries, along with advanced surgical options performed in a double surgery suite with a dedicated recovery room.
- 24-Hour Emergency Service and Referral: Understanding that emergencies can happen at any time, the clinic offers 24-hour emergency services and referral, providing crucial support when immediate care is needed, as highlighted by a customer who utilized their "emergency after hours visit."
- Behavioral Consultations: Addressing behavioral issues common in exotic pets, offering guidance to improve their well-being and the bond with their owners.
- Grooming Services: Specialized grooming, such as nail trims for birds and other exotic pets, performed with expertise and a gentle touch.
- Species-Specific Care: They treat an incredibly diverse range of animals, including:
- Pet Birds: Parrots, cockatiels, canaries, finches, chickens, ducks, and various other avian species.
- Reptiles: Turtles, tortoises, snakes, lizards, geckos, and chameleons. They can even help with injured wild turtles.
- Rabbits: Comprehensive care for domestic rabbits, which require specialized knowledge distinct from cats and dogs.
- Rodents & Small Mammals: Guinea pigs, ferrets, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, chinchillas, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and more.
- Amphibians: Frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts.
- Fish: Including aquarium and pond species, addressing issues like infections and water quality.
- Other Exotics: Including small hoof-stock and sometimes even zoo species.
- Wildlife Care: While primarily focused on pets, they demonstrate a compassionate willingness to help with injured wild animals (e.g., turtles), often coordinating with wildlife rehabilitators.
The Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic stands out as a national leader in its field, thanks to several exceptional features and highlights that directly benefit the local Indiana community:
- Board-Certified Specialists: This is arguably their most significant highlight. The clinic employs Indiana's first board-certified Exotic Companion Mammal Specialist and two board-certified Avian Specialists through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP). This means their veterinarians have undergone extensive, rigorous training and examinations, placing them among the top experts in the nation for these specific animal groups. As one customer raved, "We love that they are avian board certified and we wouldn’t wanna take Abby anywhere else!"
- Pioneering and Established Practice: Founded in 1985, it is one of the nation's first practices dedicated entirely to exotic and non-traditional pets. This long history translates into decades of accumulated knowledge and experience, a rarity in this specialized field.
- Experienced and Highly Skilled Staff: The team comprises not just board-certified veterinarians but also skilled registered veterinary technicians and client care specialists, all dedicated to exotic animal care. They are described as "amazing to work with!" and "compassionate."
- Comprehensive Facility: The hospital features a well-equipped facility with 4 examination rooms, a double surgery suite, advanced diagnostic imaging (ultrasound, radiography, in-house CT scanner), a dedicated surgery recovery room, an isolation ward, and even a room for injured wildlife.
- Commitment to Education: The clinic actively participates in the instruction and continuing education of visiting veterinarians and both veterinary and veterinary technician students, helping to train the next generation of exotic animal specialists. They are an approved training site for ABVP residents.
- Compassionate End-of-Life Care: For injured wild animals or beloved exotic pets, they approach difficult decisions, like euthanasia, with profound compassion and understanding, as evidenced by a client's experience with an injured turtle.

Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic Reviews
We absolutely love this place for our Cockatiel Abby! Can’t recommend them enough! They always take amazing care of her for her check ups and nail trims. We also have used their emergency after hours visit, which was very convenient and worth it. They are amazing to work with! We love that they are avian board certified and we wouldn’t wanna take Abby anywhere else! 😊
Jun 28, 2025 · BaileeI have brought two injured wild turtles to them and they have been great. I left a voicemail asking about the status of one and they got back with me immediately. Unfortunately, the turtle had to be euthanized but they were compassionate and I appreciate them just being able to help with injured reptiles. If I had exotic pets, I would definitely bring them here.

Thank you, A&E, for all that you do. Was happy to make a donation and will continue to do so.
