Princess Anne Road is a significant artery in Virginia Beach, ensuring straightforward navigation for those traveling to the clinic.
For those commuting by car, the clinic's location offers good connectivity to major roadways. It is within a reasonable distance of major interstates such as I-264 and I-64, which are primary routes connecting Virginia Beach to other cities in the Hampton Roads area, including Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Suffolk. While a specialist clinic may not be a frequent destination for public transportation users, Virginia Beach does have a public bus system. AVUE - Affordable Veterinary Ultrasound, Endoscopy, and Internal Medicine specializes in advanced diagnostic imaging and the non-surgical treatment of complex internal diseases. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Paul Berdoulay, a board-certified internist, the clinic offers a focused range of services designed to provide precise diagnoses and effective treatment plans.
Veterinary Internal Medicine Consultations: Dr. Berdoulay, as a DACVIM, provides expert consultations for a wide array of internal medical conditions. This includes chronic and complex diseases affecting various organ systems such as the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, liver, endocrine system (e.g., diabetes, thyroid disorders), and respiratory system. They work collaboratively with your primary care veterinarian to ensure a cohesive treatment strategy.
Diagnostic Ultrasound: This non-invasive imaging technique is a core service. Ultrasound is crucial for evaluating soft tissue organs, identifying abnormalities like tumors, cysts, fluid accumulation, or changes in organ architecture. It allows for direct visualization of organs like the liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, and adrenal glands. It's also used for:
Ultrasound-Guided Biopsies/Aspirates: For precise collection of tissue or fluid samples from internal organs, minimizing the need for more invasive surgical procedures.
Echocardiography: Specialized ultrasound of the heart to assess its structure and function, diagnosing conditions like heart murmurs or congenital defects.
Endoscopy: A minimally invasive diagnostic tool that involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a camera into body cavities or organs to visualize internal structures directly. Common endoscopic procedures include:
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy: For examining the esophagus, stomach, and intestines to diagnose conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcers, or to remove foreign objects.
Rhinoscopy: For evaluating the nasal passages in cases of chronic sneezing, nasal discharge, or nosebleeds.
Bronchoscopy: For examining the airways and lungs in pets with chronic cough or respiratory issues.
Otoscopy: Enhanced visualization of the ear canal, especially for chronic ear infections.
Endoscopic Biopsies: Allows for the collection of tissue samples from within these organs for histopathological examination, leading to definitive diagnoses.
Oncology Support: While not a primary oncology center, internal medicine specialists like Dr. Berdoulay often play a critical role in diagnosing and managing cancer patients, particularly those requiring chemotherapy or supportive care. Reviews indicate they assist with treatments like lymphoma chemotherapy, making advanced cancer care more accessible and affordable.
Post-Diagnostic Treatment Planning: Based on diagnostic findings from ultrasound, endoscopy, and other tests, AVUE works with pet owners and their primary vets to develop comprehensive and personalized treatment plans for complex medical conditions.
AVUE - Affordable Veterinary Ultrasound, Endoscopy, and Internal Medicine stands out in the Virginia veterinary landscape due to several key features and highlights that directly benefit pet owners and their companions.
Board-Certified Internal Medicine Specialist (Dr. Paul Berdoulay): This is a paramount highlight. Dr. Berdoulay's DACVIM certification signifies extensive, specialized training beyond general veterinary school, making him an expert in diagnosing and treating complex diseases affecting internal organs. Pet owners can be confident their animals are receiving care from a highly qualified specialist. His "knowledge and approach to care" are consistently praised.
Focus on Advanced Diagnostics (Ultrasound & Endoscopy): The clinic's name explicitly highlights its core strengths. Offering specialized ultrasound and endoscopy services means AVUE can provide minimally invasive yet highly effective diagnostic tools. These technologies allow for precise internal visualization and tissue sampling, often leading to quicker and more accurate diagnoses for challenging conditions without requiring invasive surgery.
Affordability in Specialty Care: The "Affordable" in their name is a significant draw. Specialty veterinary care can be expensive, and AVUE aims to provide high-level diagnostics and internal medicine support at a more accessible price point. This makes advanced care attainable for a broader range of Virginia pet owners, as highlighted by a review noting, "Not only is AVUE affordable for chemotherapy, but the staff is empathetic to your situation."
Exceptional Compassion and Communication: Customer reviews consistently commend the team's empathetic approach and Dr. Berdoulay's thorough communication. Clients appreciate that he "really cares about his clients and pets," is "very thorough with his communication," and is "patient and answered every question we had." This compassionate and clear communication is vital when dealing with serious diagnoses.
Personalized Treatment Plans: Dr. Berdoulay is noted for being "very methodical as he creates a treatment plan" that is "best for you and your pet." This individualized approach ensures that the medical strategy considers both the pet's specific condition and the owner's circumstances and preferences, leading to more effective and manageable care.
Collaborative Approach with Referring Vets: AVUE works closely with a pet's primary care veterinarian. This collaborative model ensures seamless care, with specialists providing advanced diagnostics and treatment plans that complement the ongoing care from the pet's regular vet, fostering a comprehensive and continuous healthcare journey.
Positive Outcomes for Challenging Cases: Testimonials speak to AVUE's success with very ill pets and cancer treatment, where they "confirmed a preliminary cancer diagnosis" and provided ongoing care that clients "thoroughly enjoyed." This track record with difficult cases builds trust and confidence among the local pet community.

Thank you for everything you do and thanks for taking the best care of my fluffy (opinionated) side-kick.
May 28, 2025 · Gabby San SouciDr. Berdoulay is an outstanding internist. We brought one of our very ill dogs to be cared for by him. We had many questions, and Dr. Berdoulay was patient and answered every question we had. He is very methodical as he creates a treatment plan. We have brought one of our other dogs for two issues. We have been extremely satisfied by Dr. Berdoulay's knowledge and approach to care and ongoing treatment. We have nothing but positive experiences to share and would wholeheartedly recommend this facility to any pet parent seeking a phenomenal internal medicine specialist.
May 10, 2025 · Angelique Concepcion-BrownMy pup is currently in treatments there for Lymphoma. I feel like the truly care about their fur patients. They are so gentle with Lash and I am thankful. Appointment availability has been perfect as well so far as well
Mar 29, 2025 · DorothyOur pup got so sick and we couldn't get a good diagnosis until we got into AVUE and saw Dr. Berdoulay. He confirmed a preliminary cancer diagnosis and explained several times what our options were. Treatment wasn't going to be an option so we made the choice to send our boy over the bridge so that he wasn't suffering any longer. Dr. Bordoulay continued to contact us after we made the decision as the biopsy's were confirmed by lab results. He contacted our normal vet with the results and news that we said goodbye. I wish we never had to meet but his compassion and caring were what we needed. The staff is fantastic too!
Sep 08, 2023 · Jim MeinckeThe absolute best experience compared to any oncology doctor in hampton roads, including blue pearl. Not only is AVUE affordable for chemotherapy, but the staff is empathetic to your situation and everything is explained in great detail to support the decisions that you make through the process. Weve been treating our pup for a year now and have thoroughly enjoyed bringing our pup here to AVUE.
