Wasn’t going to do a review, just going to start taking my pets somewhere else but I’ve heard other negative experiences so I wanted to post mine from February.TLDR: they will waste your time & don’t show any care for your pets.My cat was having issues urinating in the house. I scheduled an appointment for her in the afternoon. I got a call from Banfield asking if I could bring her in early at 8 am rather than my 3:30 appointment time and they would monitor her and do the urinalysis. I asked when dropping her off if I should still plan to come at 3:30. Was told they would call me to let me know. I didn’t hear anything so I called around 2:45 - was on hold for over 20 minutes. They told me not to come in and they would call back in 15-20 minutes. An hour passed and I heard nothing. I called again and the person who answered had no idea what was going on said she would check with the care team. She did call back and say my cat wasn’t ready yet.I get a call at 5:30 that I can come in and get my cat. Got there and waited another 15 minutes to be seen. They asked me if they could do a urinalysis which I had already agreed to when I dropped my cat off. So my cat was there for over 9 hours and they had not looked at her or done anything to help her. The vet that I saw seemed confused and did not explain anything to me, just wanted to run more tests to the tune of $500. I mentioned that my cat had been there for hours for no reason and she laughed and said they were busy.I was not impressed by the vet, any of the vet techs, or the front desk staff I spoke with. No level of professionalism, disorganized, and brushed off any concern. I started taking my pets elsewhere and tell everyone I can to never bring their pets to this location. - Deidre Nyhaus

This location offers significant accessibility for residents across various parts of St. Paul and neighboring Minnesota communities such as Roseville, Falcon Heights, and Lauderdale. Larpenteur Avenue West is a major arterial road, making the hospital relatively easy to reach by car. The presence of ample parking is typically a feature of Banfield locations, contributing to a more convenient visit for pet owners. Being situated in a well-trafficked area means it is often close to other essential services, integrating easily into daily routines. This strategic positioning is designed to make routine and preventive veterinary care as accessible as possible for busy Minnesota pet parents.

Banfield Pet Hospital offers a wide array of veterinary services, often packaged within their Optimum Wellness Plans, designed to provide comprehensive care for pets throughout their lives. Their services focus primarily on preventive health and general veterinary medicine.

  • Preventive Care and Wellness Exams: This is a core focus, including routine physical examinations (often two per year with wellness plans), vaccinations (e.g., rabies, distemper, parvovirus, feline leukemia), and regular parasite control (fecal exams, deworming, heartworm testing).
  • Diagnostic Services: The hospital utilizes various diagnostic methods, including in-house laboratory diagnostics for same-day results (blood work, urinalysis) and digital radiography (X-rays) to assess internal organs and musculoskeletal systems.
  • Dental Care: Offering professional dental cleanings (scaling above and below the gum line), dental digital X-rays to examine tooth roots, and often performing extractions.
  • Surgical Services: Standard surgical procedures include spaying and neutering. Some locations may offer additional soft tissue surgeries. All anesthetic procedures include routine blood work, IV fluids, and monitoring.
  • Microchipping: A crucial service for pet identification, increasing the chances of reuniting lost pets with their families.
  • Nutrition Advice: Providing guidance on balanced diets suitable for a pet's life stage, lifestyle, and any specific health conditions.
  • Behavior Evaluation: Addressing behavioral concerns in pets and offering advice or resources to help improve pet behavior.
  • End-of-Life Services: Offering compassionate options and support during difficult times, though reviews indicate the human touch can vary.
  • Pharmacy Options: Providing convenient access to necessary medications and parasite prevention products.
  • Pet Chat™: A 24/7 veterinary advice chat line, offering immediate guidance from veterinary professionals for clients enrolled in Optimum Wellness Plans.
  • Virtual Visits: Available for OWP members, allowing for face-to-face consultations with the veterinary team from home.

When considering Banfield Pet Hospital in St. Paul, local pet owners often highlight specific features and aspects of their experience. While the corporate structure brings standardization, individual clinic experiences can vary.

  • Optimum Wellness Plans (OWP): This is arguably Banfield's most prominent feature. These are not pet insurance but rather prepaid packages of preventive care services (exams, vaccinations, basic diagnostics) offered on a monthly or annual payment basis. They aim to make routine care more affordable and predictable. They often include unlimited office visits.
  • Emphasis on Preventive Care: The OWP model strongly encourages regular check-ups and early detection, which can be beneficial for long-term pet health.
  • Accessibility and Standardized Services: Being part of a national chain, Banfield offers consistent services and often has convenient hours, including weekends, which can be appealing to busy pet owners. Access to a network of clinics nationwide is also a feature for traveling pet owners.
  • 24/7 Pet Chat™ and Virtual Visits: For OWP members, these virtual services offer quick access to veterinary advice and consultations from home, which can be a valuable convenience for immediate non-emergency questions.
  • Challenges with Communication and Organization: Some local reviews indicate difficulties with communication, long hold times on the phone, and perceived disorganization regarding appointments and patient status. One client described being on hold for "over 20 minutes" and repeated calls without clear answers about their pet's status.
  • Varying Levels of Perceived Compassion: While some experiences start positively, later interactions, particularly during difficult times like euthanasia, have been described as "cold" and "transactional," lacking personal acknowledgment of loss. This can be a significant concern for pet owners seeking empathetic care.
  • Concerns about Thoroughness and Unnecessary Tests: One review mentioned a pet being at the clinic for "over 9 hours and they had not looked at her or done anything to help her," and feeling pushed for "more tests to the tune of $500" without clear explanations. This suggests a potential for miscommunication or a perception of a more standardized, less individualized approach to diagnosis.
  • "Corporate Policy" Feel: Some feedback suggests a "corporate policy" might lead to a less personalized or empathetic experience, particularly during emotionally charged moments, contrasting with the more personal touch often found in smaller, independent clinics.
