For pet owners across Maine, especially those residing in and around Orland, finding a reliable and compassionate veterinary hospital is crucial for the health and happiness of their beloved animal companions. When unexpected emergencies arise or routine care is needed, knowing where to turn for professional assistance provides immense peace of mind. This article aims to provide a clear and informative overview of Bucksport Veterinary Hospital, located conveniently in Orland, ME, detailing their services, accessibility, and insights from local users.
Bucksport Veterinary Hospital presents itself as a dedicated animal hospital focused on providing veterinary care for your pets. They understand the strong bond between humans and their animals and strive to be a supportive partner in maintaining your pet's health. Like many local businesses, experiences can vary, and it's helpful to consider different perspectives when choosing a healthcare provider for your cherished family members.
One glowing review highlights the clinic's willingness to take in an emergency case when other places wouldn't, even for a new patient, and praises the "Awesome Doc!" and the affordability. This speaks to a strong commitment to immediate care and community support. However, another review details a deeply frustrating experience for a new resident trying to establish care, citing abrupt communication, an inability to schedule appointments despite having records sent, and allegations of dishonesty regarding a client's behavior. These contrasting experiences underscore the importance of understanding all facets of a clinic's operation, from emergency responsiveness to routine patient intake processes.
Bucksport Veterinary Hospital is strategically located at 11 Gross Point Rd, Orland, ME 04472, USA. This address places it conveniently within reach for residents of Orland and the surrounding areas, including towns like Bucksport, Penobscot, Castine, and Verona Island. Gross Point Road offers straightforward access, making the clinic relatively easy to find for those familiar with the local road network.
The accessibility of a veterinary clinic is a significant factor for pet owners, especially during an emergency or for routine visits that need to fit into a busy schedule. Being situated in Orland means that pet owners in this region have a local option for their veterinary needs without having to travel extended distances. This local presence is particularly valuable in rural areas of Maine, where specialized services might be spread out. The clinic's hours are generally Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, though it is always advisable to confirm their most current operating hours directly, especially given any ongoing remodeling mentioned in reviews.
Bucksport Veterinary Hospital is a small animal hospital that provides a range of essential veterinary services to address the health and wellness needs of dogs and cats. While specific comprehensive lists are best confirmed directly with the hospital, generally, a full-service animal hospital like Bucksport Veterinary Hospital offers:
- Wellness Exams: Routine physical examinations are crucial for preventative care, helping to detect potential health issues early and ensuring your pet's overall well-being.
- Vaccinations: Essential immunizations to protect pets from common and serious infectious diseases, tailored to the pet's age, lifestyle, and local risks.
- Laboratory Services: Diagnostic testing for blood work, urinalysis, fecal examinations, and other tests to aid in quickly and accurately diagnosing various conditions.
- X-rays (Radiology): Imaging services to examine internal organs and bone structures, crucial for diagnosing injuries, illnesses, or foreign bodies.
- Surgery: Performing surgical procedures, which commonly include routine spaying and neutering, as well as various soft tissue surgeries.
- Dental Cleaning: Professional dental cleanings and other dental care to maintain oral health, which is vital for a pet's overall well-being.
- Flea and Tick Control: Providing preventative and treatment options for external parasites.
- Emergency Care: As indicated by a positive review, the hospital has shown willingness to take in emergency cases, even for new patients, during their operational hours. For after-hours emergencies, they would likely refer to a 24/7 emergency veterinary clinic in a larger hub like Brewer or Portland.
- Miscellaneous Services: This can encompass a broad category including microchipping, nutritional counseling, and possibly specialized services depending on the veterinarians' expertise.
- Cremation Services: Providing compassionate options for pet owners during end-of-life situations.
- Wellness Plans: Some veterinary hospitals offer wellness plans for canines, felines, puppies, and kittens, which can bundle routine care at a predictable cost.
- Online Store: The hospital maintains an online store, likely for convenient ordering of pet food, medications, and other supplies.
Bucksport Veterinary Hospital presents a mixed but notable set of features and highlights based on available public information and customer experiences:
- Emergency Responsiveness (for established or new patients, within hours): A significant highlight, as noted by a positive reviewer, is the hospital's willingness to take in emergency cases, even for new patients, when many other clinics would not. This demonstrates a strong commitment to animal welfare and community support, particularly in urgent situations.
- Compassionate "Awesome Doc": The "Awesome Doc!" mentioned in a review implies a highly regarded veterinarian known for compassion and effective care. This personal connection with a caring professional is invaluable for pet owners.
- Affordability: One reviewer explicitly mentioned the clinic being "half the price of over 15 places I called," suggesting that Bucksport Veterinary Hospital offers more affordable veterinary services compared to some other options in the region. This is a crucial factor for many Maine pet owners.
- Family Owned: Information indicates Bucksport Veterinary Hospital is a "family owned small animal hospital," which often fosters a more personalized and community-focused approach to care.
- Long-Standing Service: The clinic states they have been "caring for your pet for more than 25 years," indicating a long history of service and experience in the community.
- Commitment to Stress Reduction: They "strive to make your pets visit stress free," suggesting an effort to create a calming environment for animals.
However, it's also important to address concerns raised in other feedback:
- Inconsistent Customer Service & Communication: One detailed negative review highlights significant issues with customer service, including abruptness, perceived uncaring attitudes, miscommunication regarding appointment scheduling for new patients, and an allegation of dishonesty (lying about a client's behavior). This suggests that client-facing processes and interpersonal communication may vary and could be an area of concern for some.
- "Hoops to Jump Through" for New Patients: The experience of having records sent but still being unable to secure an immediate appointment due to not being "established" suggests a potentially rigid new patient intake process that could be frustrating, especially when a pet is suffering.
- Undergoing Remodeling: As mentioned in one review, the clinic was undergoing remodeling, which might temporarily affect the appearance or organization of the facility. While this is often a sign of improvement, it's a short-term consideration for visitors.

Bucksport Veterinary Hospital Reviews
Awesome Doc!She took us in an emergency and we’ve never been before.Needless to say, this is our new veterinarian. :)They were in the process of remodeling so excuse the mess… oh and half the price of over 15 places I called. Being new in town it was hard.Nobody would take us. But Bucksport did!
Apr 09, 2025 · LiftedLife420So we're new to the area and this place came highly recommended. Why, I could not tell you. I talked to two different people and both were abrupt and uncaring. And then this happened:They said they were accepting new patients. They took all my information and all of my dog's information and had me have my old vet send over all the records. This all happened on a Monday. They said to call back the next day to get an intraday appointment. I did so on Tuesday. No appointments available Tuesday because a doctor is out sick. Of course, that happens. No problem there. But can't make an appointment for one of the slots tomorrow because we're not "established" clients? Clearly, their processes are more important than taking care of their patients, animal and human alike. So I call back today--Wednesday--and find that the person I spoke to lied--OUTRIGHT MADE UP A LIE--and said I swore at them. I did ask if they knew of any vets that actually cared about animals, because I find this whole process bizarre. But I'm 55 years old and have a career and a fancy car and all that stuff. I know when I swear at someone.Absolutely horrible experience and I am pretty sure they are all terrible people. I don't really mind obscure hoops to jump through to get medical care for myself; I can reason things out. Watching my dog suffer needlessly because they need to...I'm not even sure what. Clients come and go in medical practices, so I'm not even able to figure out what it was they were trying to do by preventing me from making an appointment? But it's fine. I don't want my dog in the care of people so dishonest and disgusting. -
Mar 05, 2025 · Kevin BorchersMy cat is always a growly, threatening jerk to these fine people, but they’re always nice to him (and me) anyway. He’s a tough cookie to bring in but they’ve been adaptable, understanding, and safety-focused each time we’ve come in for a check-up. Thanks Bucksport vet!
May 09, 2025 · Mary HartleySince moving to the area, we have found the vet for us. Everyone is caring, attentive, and knowledgeable. It's a bit of a drive for us, but it is so worth it. They return calls quickly if the phone went to voice mail and are also quick to call with lab results so treatment can begin without hesitation.
Feb 18, 2025 · Jacob RosatiExcellent compassionate staff. They were able to squeeze us in for an emergency visit. We are very grateful.
