CareVet of Freeport stands out significantly for several key features and highlights that make it a highly recommended choice for pet owners in Maine:
Fear Free Certified: This is arguably their most prominent feature. As confirmed by a client review, "FVH is the only certified fear free vet in Maine and they are well worth the extra drive!" This certification means their entire team, facility, and procedures are designed to minimize fear, anxiety, and stress in pets. They achieve this not just with medication, but by taking "their time with our dog, ask for his triggers and respect them, give us homework to help him in future visits (like buying a play stethoscope to get him used to it, which totally worked!), and knowing when he's done and needs a break." This proactive and empathetic approach transforms vet visits.
Exceptional Compassion and Understanding: Reviews consistently highlight the "wonderful caring place" and the "compassionate, skilled" nature of the staff, particularly Dr. Desir and his crew. They are praised for their ability to "listen, observes, and truly cares about your best friend," even allowing an anxious dog to "be himself and respecting his anxiety."
Positive Reinforcement and Behavioral Techniques: Instead of resorting to drugs, they successfully use positive reinforcement and gentle handling. A customer noted their dog is "actually excited to go into the building because of all the treats he'll get (we used to have to physically drag him from the car)." This approach has enabled them to perform procedures like "check his teeth, listen to his heart, administer shots with no problem and even draw blood without a growl!"
Dedicated and Talented Team: The staff are repeatedly described as "really talented, caring people" and "the best." The personalized attention and willingness to work with individual pet needs, even challenging ones, demonstrate their high level of skill and commitment.
Commitment to Pet Comfort: Their focus on creating a low-stress environment leads to better outcomes. The transformation of a fear-filled dog into one excited for vet visits is a powerful testament to their methods.

Jul 05, 2025 · Victoria ClydeOur dog became really scared of the vet during COVID when we couldn't go in with him. It seemed all hope of having a complete physical were lost when a friend recommended Freeport Veterinary Hospital. Instead they take their time with our dog, ask for his triggers and respect them, give us homework to help him in future visits (like buying a play stethoscope to get him used to it, which totally worked!), and knowing when he's done and needs a break. Feb 17, 2025 · Lani LeeI can’t say enough good things about my experience with Dr. Desir and his team. My dog injured himself while running yesterday, and I was incredibly worried when he suddenly couldn’t walk. The vet took us in *same day*—first thing in the morning—and from the moment we arrived, I felt like we were in the best hands possible.Dr. Desir was amazing. He immediately had a strong sense of what the injury was, but he still took the time to carefully rule out anything more serious. He was incredibly thorough, knowledgeable, and kind—not just with my dog, but with me too. You could tell right away that he’s empathetic and patient, which means the world when you’re a panicked pet parent. What really stood out was how well he explained everything. He didn’t rush through anything and made sure I understood what was going on, what to expect, and how to help my dog heal. I was blown away by his expertise, and equally touched by how sweet and gentle both he and his staff were with my dog. From the speed at which we were seen to the genuine care we received, it was an exceptional experience. Thank you, Dr. Desir and team.
Apr 21, 2025 · Jessica GuertinKind, caring staff. Dr. Singh explained what was going on w/Harry in great detail- and showed me as he did the eye exam and stain. The vet techs were equally as kind and competent! I’m glad I brought my fur baby to your office!
