As a full-service veterinary hospital where Dr. John Dodson practices, Gettysburg Animal Hospital typically offers a broad spectrum of veterinary services for small animals, primarily dogs and cats. Based on the common services provided by such facilities in Pennsylvania, clients can generally expect the following:
- Wellness and Preventative Care: This includes routine physical examinations, comprehensive vaccination programs to prevent illnesses, and preventative services such as deworming and parasite control.
- Medical Services: Diagnosis and treatment of various health conditions, ranging from common illnesses to more complex medical issues. This may involve internal medicine consultations for conditions like diabetes, as mentioned in a review for another veterinary facility that provides comprehensive care.
- Surgical Services: Performance of both routine and more complex surgical procedures. This would typically include spaying and neutering, as well as specialized surgeries like orthopedic procedures (e.g., knee surgery, as indicated in a review). The hospital aims to use safe anesthesia and patient monitoring.
- Diagnostic and Laboratory Services: Utilizing in-house laboratory capabilities for rapid and accurate blood tests, urinalysis, and fecal analysis. They also offer diagnostic imaging such as digital X-rays to help accurately diagnose internal conditions.
- Dental Care: Comprehensive dental services, including cleanings and extractions, to maintain oral health, which is crucial for a pet's overall well-being.
- Microchipping: Offering microchip implantation for permanent identification, greatly increasing the chances of reuniting lost pets with their owners.
- Nutritional Counseling: Guidance on appropriate diets for different life stages and specific health conditions.
- Emergency and/or Extended Care: While not necessarily a 24-hour emergency hospital, a full-service facility would provide urgent care during business hours and potentially after-hours arrangements or referrals for critical cases. One review notes they "were able to get her in that day and fixed her" for an injury, indicating capacity for urgent needs.
- Pet Supplies: The hospital may offer a range of pet supplies, including prescription diets and medications.
The hospital states that its doctors continually stay abreast of current trends in veterinary medicine to provide effective care.
Gettysburg Animal Hospital, where Dr. John Dodson practices, presents a mixed picture in terms of client experience, highlighting both positive aspects and serious concerns raised in customer reviews. It is essential to provide a balanced and factual overview of these features.
- Capacity for Urgent Care/Emergencies: A significant highlight is their ability to accommodate urgent situations. One positive review specifically praises the hospital for being "able to get her in that day and fixed her" when their Australian Shepherd injured its leg while traveling, indicating a responsiveness to immediate needs.
- Compassionate Care for Acute Injuries: The same positive reviewer noted that the staff was "very compassionate and loving toward our baby" during an emergency, which is crucial for pet owners in stressful situations.
- Full-Service Veterinary Hospital: The hospital describes itself as a "full-service veterinary hospital," suggesting that it offers a comprehensive range of general medical, surgical, and preventative care services, aiming to provide a one-stop solution for many pet health needs.
- Up-to-Date Equipment and Current Trends: The hospital states that it has "up-to-date veterinary medical equipment" and that its "doctors continually stay abreast of current trends in veterinary medicine," implying a commitment to modern veterinary practices and diagnostics.
- Affordable Rates (Stated Goal): The hospital also states that it "strive to keep our rates affordable," which could be a benefit for local pet owners managing healthcare costs.
- Serious Concerns Raised by a Client: It is critical to address the highly negative review concerning a Maltese dog's knee surgery. This review alleges issues including incorrect medication dosages leading to severe complications and death, unprofessional conduct regarding financial matters, and a perceived lack of knowledge about specific breeds. The client explicitly mentions contacting an attorney for a malpractice lawsuit and advising others to "Pls do not let Dobson tend ur dog." This indicates a significant and very serious concern about the quality of care and ethical conduct in a specific case.
- Staff Knowledge Concerns: Another review, while brief, mentioned difficulty getting information about dog dry food from staff, being redirected to another employee. This could indicate inconsistencies in staff training on certain product lines or general knowledge.
The highly positive emergency intervention review contrasts sharply with the very serious allegations in the negative review. Potential clients should be aware of both documented experiences when considering this practice.

We were traveling in the area and our 12 year old Australian Shepard jumped down and injured her back leg. Not being from around here, I called the office and they were able to get her in that day and fixed her. Very grateful for the help and they were very compassionate and loving toward our baby. Highly recommended
