The journey of pet ownership inevitably involves various visits to the vet, and the quality of these interactions can significantly shape our perception of a clinic. This address places the clinic within a key and accessible area of West San Antonio, serving a broad segment of the city's growing population. For local San Antonians, the accessibility of a veterinary clinic is a practical and important consideration. Being situated on a main thoroughfare like Ellison Drive provides straightforward routes for those traveling from nearby communities and allows for relatively easy connections to major roads, such as Loop 1604 or Highway 90. This ease of access can significantly reduce travel time and minimize stress for both pets and their owners, which is particularly beneficial when managing regular appointments, dealing with unexpected injuries, or dropping off/picking up pets for boarding or grooming services.
The clinic's presence in the 78245 zip code means it serves a vital role for residents in this part of San Antonio, including areas like Westover Hills, Lackland City, and other rapidly developing communities on the city's west side. Ample parking is generally a feature of clinics located in commercial suites or dedicated facilities, further enhancing the convenience for clients. The straightforward address and well-established location contribute to the overall ease with which local residents can access the services offered by Ellison Drive Animal Hospital, making it a geographically practical choice for comprehensive pet care needs.
Based on the provided customer reviews, Ellison Drive Animal Hospital appears to offer a range of general veterinary services, including medical care, grooming, and boarding. While a detailed list of every specific service isn't provided, we can infer some of their offerings from the client experiences:
- General Veterinary Consultations & Check-ups: The clinic provides appointments for pet health concerns, as evidenced by the visit for a dog's injured nail and "yearly preventative care."
- Preventative Care: Clients utilize the clinic for "yearly check-ups," suggesting routine health assessments and preventative measures like vaccinations or parasite control are offered.
- Injury Treatment: The clinic handled a dog's injured nail, indicating they address common pet injuries. This would likely include wound care, bandaging, and medication.
- Prescription Services: Medication was dispensed for the dog's pain, implying an on-site pharmacy or prescription fulfillment service.
- Pet Boarding: This is a clearly highlighted service, with multiple clients utilizing it and providing feedback on the care provided during their pets' stays.
- Pet Grooming: One review explicitly states trust in the clinic for "grooming needs," indicating this is another service they provide.
- Dental Services: While not explicitly mentioned in the reviews provided, most general animal hospitals offer basic dental care, such as cleanings, as part of comprehensive pet health.
- Diagnostic Services: To diagnose injuries or health problems, clinics typically utilize diagnostic tools such as physical exams, and potentially X-rays or lab tests.
It is always recommended for new clients to contact the clinic directly to confirm the availability of specific services and discuss their pet's individual needs.
Ellison Drive Animal Hospital presents a mixed bag of features and highlights, as seen through the contrasting experiences of its clients. It's important to present both the positive aspects and the areas of concern from a local user's perspective:
- Long-Term Client Relationships (Historically Positive): One review explicitly states, "We have been going to Ellison Drive Animal Hospital for years," indicating that the clinic has historically maintained long-standing relationships with loyal clients.
- Friendly and Professional Staff (Inconsistent): One positive review mentions, "Everyone that we have encountered that works there is friendly and professional. The front office is always so welcoming." However, this is directly contradicted by another review detailing "dismissive attitude," "unprofessional," and "cold and disconnected" front desk staff, suggesting an inconsistency in staff demeanor.
- Knowledgeable and Compassionate Vets (Inconsistent): A positive review highlights that "the vets have been knowledgeable and compassionate," and they "received excellent care." This is in stark contrast to the experience where a basic injury was mismanaged, and accountability was lacking, implying that the quality of veterinary care or consistency in attention to detail might vary.
- Highly Praised Boarding Services: This is a significant positive highlight. Chloe and her team in boarding receive effusive praise for being "great and welcoming," providing "so many photos of them during their stay," and giving "cutest take home packages" like Mother's Day cards with paw prints. Clients "never once worried about them" and felt their pets "had an absolute blast." This strongly indicates a dedicated, loving, and highly organized boarding department.
- Comprehensive Care Offerings: The clinic offers a convenient range of services, including veterinary care, grooming, and boarding, making it a potential one-stop shop for local pet owners.
However, the negative review highlights critical areas of concern that local pet owners should be aware of:
- Significant Lack of Accountability for Mistakes: A major issue reported was the clinic's failure to acknowledge and immediately correct a clear mistake (trimming the wrong nail), instead deflecting blame and attempting to charge extra. This indicates a concerning lack of professional accountability and client-focused problem-solving.
- Poor Communication and Unprofessionalism from Staff (Specific Instances): The detailed negative review highlights "dismissive attitude," "deflected," "tried to shift the blame," and "incredibly disappointed" interactions with staff. The receptionist's "terrible attitude" and discussing a client's late fee "openly to other clients" demonstrates severe unprofessionalism and a lack of discretion.
- Inconsistent Care and Attention to Detail: The instance of the wrong nail being trimmed, despite being "visibly damaged" and "specifically pointed out," suggests a concerning lack of attention to detail during a basic procedure.
- Lack of Empathy and Support: The client felt "met with a dismissive attitude," and that "not a single staff member offered any empathy or support" during a distressing experience, leading to feelings of being "emotional and shaken."

For pet owners across San Antonio, Texas, choosing a veterinary clinic is a deeply personal decision, influenced by trust, quality of care, and overall client experience. Ellison Drive Animal Hospital, situated conveniently on South Ellison Drive, presents a complex picture of suitability for local residents, largely due to contrasting client feedback.
On one hand, the clinic clearly excels in its boarding services. Multiple local clients have expressed overwhelming satisfaction, praising the "great and welcoming" team, the frequent photo and text updates, and the "cutest take home packages." This highly personalized and compassionate approach to boarding ensures that pets "had an absolute blast" and owners "never once worried about them." For San Antonians seeking reliable, loving care for their pets while they are away, Ellison Drive Animal Hospital's boarding department appears to be an exceptional and highly suitable choice, demonstrating a genuine passion for animal well-being beyond basic supervision. The availability of grooming services further adds to its convenience as a comprehensive pet care hub.
However, the suitability of Ellison Drive Animal Hospital for general veterinary medical care presents a more nuanced view. While one long-term client praised the "friendly and professional" front office and "knowledgeable and compassionate" vets who provided "excellent care" for all three of their dogs over years, another detailed a deeply upsetting experience involving a basic medical procedure. The report of a visibly injured nail being ignored in favor of trimming a healthy one, coupled with a complete lack of accountability, dismissive attitudes from staff, and an attempt to charge extra for their own mistake, raises significant concerns about consistency in care, attention to detail, and client service.
For a local veterinary clinic to be truly suitable, especially for crucial medical needs, it must consistently demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and a strong sense of responsibility. The alleged public discussion of a client's late fee and the reported defensiveness when a clear error was pointed out are serious deviations from expected client service standards. This indicates that while the clinic may have individual staff members or departments (like boarding) that excel, the overall operational consistency and client relations for veterinary medical services may be unpredictable.
Therefore, for San Antonio residents, Ellison Drive Animal Hospital might be an excellent choice for boarding and grooming due to its highly praised, compassionate, and attentive team. However, when considering it for veterinary medical care, particularly for new pet parents or those who value meticulous attention to detail and unwavering accountability, the mixed reviews suggest that it would be prudent to exercise caution and thoroughly evaluate if their veterinary medical service aligns with your specific expectations for consistent professional care and empathetic communication. Trust, especially in the medical field, is built on reliability and a willingness to own and correct mistakes, which appears to be an inconsistent element based on diverse client experiences.

Ellison Drive Animal Hospital Reviews
I have been bringing my dog to Ellison Drive Animal Hospital for years, but after our most recent experience, I will not be returning. I truly hope other pet owners think twice before trusting their animals with the individuals at this clinic.Last week, my dog injured one of his nails when it got caught in the carpet while he was running up the stairs. It was cracked, bleeding, and clearly causing him pain. I called the clinic and was scheduled for an appointment. When we arrived, I pointed out the exact nail that was injured and it was still visibly damaged and had dried blood on it. I was told they would trim the nail, wrap his paw, and send us home with medication. The visit cost close to $200.Since my family was going out of town the next day, we chose to leave the bandage on for the full week. We wanted to be cautious, especially because my dog tends to lick his paws and has a habit of removing bandages on his own. His sitter followed all the instructions and gave him his medication regularly. When I returned and finally removed the cast, I was shocked. The injured nail I had specifically pointed out was still there, untouched. Instead, they had cut off a completely different nail.I called the clinic immediately, hoping they would instantly acknowledge the mistake and offer to correct it. Instead, I was met with a dismissive attitude and told I would have to pay a starting fee of $65 to be seen again, not including any other necessary costs. It was only when we went up to the clinic in person and pushed the issue that they finally agreed not to charge us to fix their mistake. During that conversation, they deflected and claimed the nail they trimmed had been hanging off and had discharge, which is completely false. My family and I know without a doubt that the nail they cut was completely fine and showed no signs of injury.I understand that mistakes can happen, but what frustrated me most was the lack of accountability. I showed them the correct nail, and it was still visibly injured and clearly bothering my dog. There should have been no confusion. Instead of immediately acknowledging the mistake and working to fix it, I found myself having to repeatedly explain what went wrong while they stayed defensive and avoided taking responsibility. Rather than owning their mistake, they tried to shift the blame onto us for not removing the cast sooner, even though we were simply trying to protect the injury from infection while we were away. After being a loyal client for years, I am incredibly disappointed. If something this basic can be handled so carelessly, I would never feel comfortable trusting them with a more serious issue. I will not be returning, and I strongly recommend finding a clinic that treats both pets and their owners with the care and respect they deserve.
Jul 02, 2025 · cadense sWe have been going to Ellison Drive Animal Hospital for years. Everyone that we have encountered that works there is friendly and professional. The front office is always so welcoming, and the vets have been knowledgeable and compassionate. We have taken all 3 of our dogs there, and they have received excellent care. We not only trust them with our dogs' health, but with their grooming and boarding needs as well. My experience with Ellison Drive Animal Hospital has been wonderful.
Jul 01, 2025 · sarah fortmullerTLDR; employees were high and I have never had an on time appointment here.I have taken my cats here about 3 times, and the appointment has never actually been at the time that they told us it would be. One of my cats has to take anxiety medication prior to his appointments, and it wears off quickly (and costs me money). Because they are never on time, his medicine wears off and he is unable to be seen. The last time I took him, I was the first appointment of the day. They told me they were still prepping the rooms for animals to be seen, so I agreed to sit in my car and wait for someone to either call me or wave for me to come in. I waited 45 minutes and then went in to check, as his medication was wearing off. The employees were visibly high, and literally told me that they forgot about us.
Jul 01, 2025 · Chellbe AllwineIf only there is a Zero I would put it instead of the 1 star! I brought my adult yorkie today as his tongue was bleeding and after i put in pressure and ice i took him to vet. I understand that we were walk-in and tech saw my yorkie, even cane in the 2nd time to clean him, said he may need his tongue cauterized, etc but she will ask the doctor. Of course I understood that it has to be doctor’s recommendation and not the tech, I do not remember his name but sounded like an Indian name, he was very unfriendly, uncaring, and did not provide further recommendation, his only purpose was he told me he could not do anything as they are short staffed, and to make appointment for Monday. He even told me that he is the doctor and the tech has no certification. Why put down a coworker, just for him to stress out who he is? He needs to learn bedside manners as our pets are family members too. He should have taken care of this better so as not to ignite this type of review. He said my dog’s tongue is not actively bleeding , as i said i did already what i think could b done and tech somewhat cleaned out the blood already, duh! Very unprofessional doctor i encountered on 4/26/25 around 11 to 11:30 am. I know he had to triage in situations like this and moment i transported my dog his tongue was bleeding bad in my car t lots of blood droplets. We waited already for like an hour as we arrived a little past 10 am as i recall. Definitely not going back to this place, no wonder google reviews are unsatisfactory!
Apr 26, 2025 · Cheng SkyI used to love this vet but I am transferring all of my animals to another vet. The vet and her assistant are either too busy for the patients or they simply don't care. My rabbit died in my arms today while I waited for the results of an x-ray that was taken Thursday of last week. I still haven't heard back about the X-ray and I paid a lot to have it done. I am disappointed in this location and simply can't understand why they keep taking new patients if they don't have the time for them.
