Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital typically provides a range of veterinary services designed to address the health and well-being of small animal companions. Based on general veterinary practice standards and available information, you can expect the following types of services:
Wellness and Preventative Care: This often includes routine physical examinations, vaccinations tailored to your pet's age and lifestyle, parasite prevention and control programs (for fleas, ticks, and internal parasites), and microchipping for permanent identification. Preventative care is crucial for maintaining long-term pet health.
Diagnostic Services: To accurately assess and diagnose various conditions, veterinary hospitals generally offer diagnostic capabilities. This may include in-house laboratory testing for common blood work (like complete blood counts and chemistry panels), urinalysis, and fecal examinations for quick results. Advanced imaging techniques such as X-rays (radiography) are also typically available to visualize internal structures and aid in diagnosis.
Medical Services: Diagnosis and treatment for a variety of acute and chronic illnesses. This can encompass managing conditions related to dermatology, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory problems, and general internal medicine.
Surgical Procedures: Veterinary hospitals commonly perform various surgical interventions. This often includes routine procedures such as spaying and neutering, as well as general soft tissue surgeries. Pre-surgical evaluations, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative care are integral components of surgical services, prioritizing patient safety and recovery. As mentioned in a customer review, surgeries for dogs have been performed here.
Dental Care: Oral health is a critical component of overall pet well-being. Services typically include professional dental cleanings to remove plaque and tartar, polishing, and sometimes extractions of diseased teeth. Good dental care can help prevent systemic health problems.
Pain Management: Recognizing the importance of comfort and quality of life, the hospital offers strategies for managing both acute pain (e.g., from injuries or surgery) and chronic pain (e.g., from arthritis). This may involve various medications and supportive care.
Urgent Care: While not a 24/7 emergency hospital, general veterinary practices like this often strive to accommodate urgent care needs during their operational hours. This involves providing immediate assessment and necessary treatment for pets requiring prompt attention.
Nutrition and Diet Counseling: Guidance on appropriate diets for pets of all life stages and specific health conditions, including weight management and specialized therapeutic diets.
Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital, like any local business, has various features and highlights that shape customer experiences. Customer reviews provide direct insights into some of these aspects.
Surgical Experience: One significant highlight mentioned in a review is a positive experience with canine surgeries. A client stated, "Our dog had two surgeries with Dr Appel (2022/2025) and they both were great." This suggests that the hospital has experience in performing surgical procedures for pets and that, for this particular client, the outcomes were satisfactory.
Veterinarian's Patience and Care for Animals: The same positive review highlights that the "doctor has a lot of patience and can tell he cares about animals." This indicates a compassionate approach from the lead veterinarian, which is crucial for building trust with pet owners and comforting pets during visits.
Support Staff Quality: The "support staff was wonderful as well" according to a satisfied client. A strong and supportive team contributes significantly to the overall positive experience at a veterinary hospital, ensuring smooth operations and helpful interactions.
Customer Loyalty (for some): The statement "We are glad we chose him as our vet" from a client who had repeat surgical procedures suggests a level of trust and satisfaction that leads to continued patronage. This demonstrates that for some pet owners, the care provided meets their expectations.
Immediate Accommodation for Urgent Cases (variable interpretation): One review mentions being seen at opening time for an "emergency." While the client later felt the "emergency" designation led to higher upfront costs, the immediate ability to be seen at the start of the day for an urgent case could be seen as an attempt to accommodate acute needs quickly, which is a valuable feature for some pet owners.
Challenges with Communication and Cost Perception (as noted by one client): It's important to acknowledge that customer experiences can vary. One review highlighted concerns regarding misdiagnosis, communication about treatment plans, and the perceived high cost of services, leading to a strong negative recommendation. This suggests that some clients may experience discrepancies in expectations versus reality, particularly concerning financial transparency and diagnostic approaches.

Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital Reviews
Dr. Appel is a scam artist! We brought our cat in because she was very sick and not eating or drinking after we got home from vacation. We wanted to know the source of what was going on with her. So when went in around 8am when the location opens and he said if we brought her in now, it would be considered an emergency and we would have to pay more money upfront. We didn’t mind at the time because our baby needed to be seen now. Prior to our cat staying over night we were told to pay closer to $1400 for blood work, tests, etc. (understandable) upfront. What was really bad was that after the blood work results, he told us that she might have kidney failure or liver disease and that he DIDNT KNOW what it was but that she had to stay up to 3 to 5 days hospitalized at $400/day and made us believe if that we didn’t do that that our cat was going to die. We got really scared and emotional! We got a 2nd opinion at because our parental instincts told us to! So we went the next day to Blue Pearl Pet Hospital, which were recommended by other local veterinarians and not Dr. Appel. The specialists told us that her temperature was fine and bloodwork was fine and that she had a bruised paw and that the pain got her to contract a sickness and they even suggested a pet care credit card to help us with the payments that Dr. Appel did not suggest. So Dr. Appel misdiagnosed her and try to play on our heart strings for more money! I recommend people not to come here. Wish I was able to get our money back. Update now. It’s been about a week now and our cat is ALIVE and WELL, walking around, resting when needed, eating and drinking! Being her normal Diva self!
Jul 03, 2025 · JJ RyanGreat doctor. Very caring. Our dog had two surgeries with Dr Appel(2022/2025) and they both were great. He has a lot of patience and can tell he cares about animals. All the support staff was wonderful as well. We are glad we chose him as our vet
Apr 26, 2025 · Gloria HThis IS THE BEST VET IN NEW YORK CITY. I've never met a vet more committed to animals in my life. Dr. Appel performed an emergency surgery on my little Persian kitten. Kenny ate something that was blocking his digestive system. He was throwing up and wouldn't eat for days and most likely would have died without the surgery. After speaking with two other animal hospitals in Manhattan, I found this hospital. Unlike other surgeons, Dr. Appel took my fur baby in at around 11pm on a Friday! Most vets aren't even available that late at night without extra fees, but this Dr. was open and quoted me a much more affordable price. He was so attentive and helpful. He's been in business since the 70's and he's still got it! (I saw his diplomas from both Cornell and NYU on the wall in the office). I'm so happy to report my kitty is doing great (2 weeks after his procedure). I'd like to thank Dr. Appel and his staff for an amazing experience. Thank you for saving Kenny's life! Thank you for loving my pet as much as I do. XxP.s. this is the only review I've written on Google (should tell you something about how great this guy is)
Nov 02, 2020 · Shannon HVery unprofessional treated my dog less than all the other animals because he was a pit bull. He didn’t even want his dog getting close to mine and would keep telling my family and I to get our dog while he was just laying on the ground . Which I find very ironic since it is an animal clinic. The whole visit overall was very unpleasant he seemed like he just wanted to get us over with .He barley tried to explain anything and seemed annoyed by any question I asked .Overall it was an uncomfortable experience.
Apr 27, 2025 · Evelyn PerezAmazing, caring people. The vet is always very clear about everything, from the reality of your pet's health to every single penny of your cost. You can trust your pet to this vet and this office.
