Some pet behavioral problems can be so serious that they threaten the life of the pet when a frustrated or fearful pet owner can no longer cope with the difficult or aggressive actions of their pet and are considering euthanasia.Veterinarians are trained in pet behavior and are prepared to counsel and teach pet owners on how to treat their pet’s fear, anxiety or aggression based problems. All cats should be vaccinated to prevent against harmful and potentially life-threatening diseases. The types of cat vaccines that should be given will vary based on the life style of your pet. If your cat lives in the house and does not come into contact with other cats, only the basic cat vaccines are necessary. If your pet spends time outside and around other cats, the proper precautions should be taken with the necessary cat vaccinations. Vaccine Titers for certain vaccinations should be performed to determine if the cat needs a vaccine booster. We let the cat’s body and immune system tell us if there are sufficient antibodies to provide protection or if we need to booster that cat’s vaccinations.

- Nutritional Counseling
Pet nutritional counseling can determine which dietary changes will benefit your pet most. Pets that are overweight or obese are at increased risk for diabetes, heart disease and other chronic health conditions. If your pet is overweight, reducing portion size can help. If your pet is older or leads a primarily sedentary lifestyle, your pet may need a smaller portion size than recommended by the pet food manufacturer. Your pet may also benefit from a higher quality food without filler ingredients. For overweight pets, our dog and cat weight management services can help your pet safely lose the extra pounds. Our veterinarian will make specific serving size recommendations based on your pet’s lifestyle and will also suggest specific brands that best meet your pet’s nutrition needs. Our pet nutritional counseling services can also help pets that have been diagnosed with a food allergy. Food allergies to ingredients are increasingly common in today’s pets.

In addition to providing exceptional wellness care for pets, Harbourside Animal Hospital also offers Tampa pet dental care and dental cleaning procedures. We provide regular checkups and cleanings for both dogs and cats. These veterinarian supervised procedures are performed under anesthesia, protecting the safety of our staff and the well-being of the animal. Using anesthesia prevents the pet from moving during the cleaning and allows the doctor to perform a full examination. Most pet owners can schedule a pet dental checkup and cleaning alongside their pet’s annual examination by our veterinarian.

- Pet Surgery
Just as humans occasionally require surgery, your pet may have a need, now or in the future, for a surgical procedure. Whether you are considering spaying or neutering your pet or you face a more urgent situation, you should have a skilled Tampa pet surgery resource on hand. Our veterinary clinic can serve as that resource.Pet surgery may be required for any of several reasons, some of them strictly routine. Spaying and neutering, for instance, is recommended for all young dogs and cats as soon as they reach a safe age. Spayed or neutered pets do not experience the discomfort and behavioral issues associated with sexually active animals, and they also run a reduced risk of certain diseases, including cancer.Even if a tumor or mass is detected in your pet, surgical intervention can remove the object along with any threat it might pose to your pet’s health. Some pet surgical procedures have a preventative purpose — ear resection, for example, can help a dog afflicted with chronic ear.
- Pet Surgical Procedures
- Pet Ultrasounds
- Pet Vaccinations
- Pet Wellness Exams/Vaccinations
Preventive care starts with an annual pet wellness care exam. During this exam, Dr. Hodge conducts a full physical on your pet as well as diagnostic tests. These tests include blood count, urinalysis, blood chemistry and a parasite screening. Our lab tests are done in-house, and help us to detect a disease or condition before your pet shows symptoms. We will also ensure that your pet is up to date on all pet vaccinations. Many of these vaccines, including rabies and distemper, require annual vaccinations.Did you know that many serious illnesses in pets are linked to poor dental hygiene? Just like in humans, plaque and tartar can build up along the gum line in your pet’s mouth, leading to infections and gingivitis. Without proper treatment, a gum infection can easily spread to the bloodstream and affect internal organs. Our animal hospital provides routine dental cleanings to remove plaque and tartar build-up and polish teeth.

- Physical Exam
Even if your pet seems to be perfectly healthy, you should bring them in for a physical exam at least once a year, and more often if they are older. Your pet’s exam will be very similar to a physical you would have, including checking:Ears: The ears are checked for infections and also for parasites, as this is a common place for them to nest.Eyes: The eyes are checked for cataracts, retina disease, signs of glaucoma, and other abnormalities. These can all results in blindness, so it is important to check for them regularly.Mouth: Gum disease, lesions, tooth loss, and throat problems all affect dogs and cats. They could be signs of larger problems. Performing a full mouth examination allows us to diagnose any problems and take care of them before becoming serious.Internal Organs: The internal organs are examined to check that they are functioning properly. Skin and Coat: This is checked to make sure that there are no fleas, ticks or other parasites that have made your pet their home.

- Prescription Diets
There are many different types of food available for your pet, and each has its own benefits. You should ask your vet which particular food is best for your pet. The food your pet eats depends on their age, size, breed as well as other factors. Tampa senior pet care for dogs and cats starts around 7 years of age. Since larger breed dogs age more quickly than smaller breeds, a larger breed dog may need pet senior care sooner. Cats typically need senior care around 7 years of age; with regular check-ups and proactive care, many indoor cats can live to be 15 to 17 years old. While your pet’s age is important for determining senior care, so too is your pet’s behavior. Older pets have less responsive senses; for example, a senior dog or cat may not hear as well or move as quickly as he or she once did. As a vigilant pet owner, it is also important to pay attention to changes in your pet’s weight, eating habits and urination habits. Changes to these different behaviors may indicate an underlying health problem that requires treatment. Our Tampa veterinarian recommends semi-annual wellness exams for senior pets.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My pets have been seeing Dr. Hodge for over 12 years now! We started going to him at Cross Creek Animal Medical Centre and then moved to Harbourside. He is always kind and compassionate even with my spicy kitty! He always offers the best suggestions to help keep my babies healthy!
December 01 · Tabitha SellmerDr Hodge and Tabitha are the best! My husband and I have taken our cat and dog there for years now. They are so caring and compassionate. Tabitha the Vet Tech is absolutely amazing. She is so personable , her caring and friendly demeanor really makes you feel like your family. My dog absolutely loves her and he gets so excited every time he sees her, which is a sure sign of their amazing care. I recommend Dr. Hodge and Harbourside animal clinic to everyone!
January 07 · regina reicheWonderful, caring staff will make you feel welcome from the moment you step inside. They saw my dog same day for a broken toe. If you are anywhere in the city I'd look no further. Lovely loft style decor.
October 20 · Ivan CabreraSharing my own experience, as I want people to be aware of perceived tactics to corner you and make you pay exorbitant amounts of money on nothing while initiating mountains of worry & fear for nothing.I brought my cat and dog in as new patients a few months ago, as I recently moved to the area and was looking to get them established. My dog was kind of written off, but I brought my otherwise totally healthy cat (she does eat special food for her urinary condition, so I wanted to get her checked up) and was told by the vet something along the lines that she “possibly has a 50% chance of having cancer”. Nearly $4,000 later, the vet kept saying that they needed to do more (and more invasive) tests, yet I didn’t see anything wrong with her nor were they ever able to give her an official diagnosis…just a “need” for more tests.Based on my experience, I believe this vet preys on the hearts of animal lovers by assuming they’ll pay anything just as long as they keep using very vague, very scary medical terms to try and insist your pet *might* have a serious condition. I cried and cried for weeks thinking my cat was going to die, but then I started noticing a pattern that another comment mentioned — I never actually got to meet the vet, the vet would continuously use jargon and scary-sounding terms to get me back in, even when nothing was wrong. They bombard you with phone calls and emails trying to get more money. It’s really sad. What’s worse, they said I would have to repeat the tests at least every 6 months…I’m sorry, but I rescued my cat years ago and she’s never had a problem beyond what her prescription food is able to fix. I’m not paying +$8,000 annually for her to “maybe have a problem, maybe it’s nothing.”I will be changing vets happily, as I did not sign my cat up to be a test subject for this facility. She’s elderly and going to live the rest of her life as happily as possible, and I am disappointed with the “care” received from Harbourside.
July 30 · Cameron CobbMy dog has some health and major anxiety issues so I was concerned when moving about finding a good vet but Dr. Hodge put my mind at ease with our visit to him. He and Tabitha could not have made it a better experience, they were both wonderful with my little Maltese and spent ample time going through her issues (previous history and current concerns) with me. Many thanks to both of them for taking the time with us to be so thorough and answer all of my many questions!!
